MMF is considered one of the most sensitive parameter to point out initial decay of small airways that should appear prematurely in smokers as compared with non smokers. To verify the above we tested male subjects apparently free from any respiratory disease. They were classed into two groups of equal number: the first group of smokers, the second one of non smokers. We did not find any statistically significant difference between the two groups: this is probably due to the young age of the subjects and consequently to the relative short period of exposure to tobacco smoke.

The smoking habits of 51 patients with glomerulonephritis caused by autoantibodies to the glomerular basement membrane (GBM) were investigated. 43 patients also had pulmonary haemorrhage; 8 did not. One hundred and forty-four volunteers completed a validated questionnaire, to investigate the association between smoking, non-smoking and passive smoking status, and the degree of a range of 10 common nasal symptoms. Logistic regression showed that smokers were four times and passive smokers six times more likely to report hyposmia compared to non-smokers. No significant differences were found between the three groups for any of the other nine symptoms.

The effects of pesticide use on the respiratory health of agricultural farm workers were studied in 203 farm workers and 131 controls. The farm workers were sprayers, supervisors, technicians, and pest assessors. BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Gambling is highly comorbid with disordered use of tobacco and other drugs, and may increase relapse risk among substance use disorder (SUD) patients. We investigated associations between gambling and tobacco use behaviors among SUD patients to inform clinical care.
METHODS: Patients (N = 651, 170 female) from 25 residential SUD treatment programs in California completed surveys about tobacco use, health, and gambling. Using multivariate regression, we examined associations between gambling, tobacco use behaviors, and mental and physical health.
