Holistic Nursing Care for People Experiencing Diabetes Burnout: A Theoretical Reflection Using the Tidal Model.

Diabetes burnout is an emerging psychosocial phenomenon characterized by emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion associated with the continuous demands of diabetes management, adversely affecting self-care and wellbeing. This study aimed to develop a theoretical reflection on how the principles of the Tidal Model, interpreted through the lens of holistic nursing, may inform nursing care for individuals experiencing diabetes burnout. This theoretical reflection was based on an analytical and interpretive approach using The Tidal Model: A Guide for Mental Health Professionals, integrated with

Effects of group discussion and guided patient care experience on nurses' attitudes towards care of patients with AIDS.

Nurses with limited experience in caring for persons with AIDS (PWAs) were randomized into three groups receiving an educational session on universal precautions and (a) three group discussion sessions; (b) three sessions of caring for a PWA; or (c) assessment materials only. Both interventions were conducted by a nursing instructor experienced in care of PWAs and infectious diseases over a 3-4 week period. Measures included instruments for assessing prejudicial attitudes towards homosexual PWAs, self-ratings of infectious disease knowledge, ratings of perceived comfort and confidence in carin

Preparing families to care for ventilated infants at home.

Advances in neonatal care have led to increased survival of infants with complex medical needs and technology dependence. Transition of the ventilator-dependent infant from hospital to home is a complex process that requires extensive coordination between the medical team and family. Home caregivers must be prepared to provide routine care for the ventilator-dependent child and respond to life-threatening emergencies. Families should be counseled on the need for home nursing, medical equipment and an adequate home environment to ensure a safe transition to home. Throughout the process, the fam

[Practice of hypnosis for hospital staff by the psychiatric nurse].

Hypnosis has been around for a long time, and is now accepted as a mind-body practice that complements the treatment process. Within our hospital structure, we have set up hypnosis sessions for hospital staff. These "times for oneself" enable patients to mobilize their internal resources. These practices help to legitimize hypnosis as a complementary form of nursing care.

Computer based nursing documentation means to achieve the goal.

New functions have been integrated in the Giessen Hospital Information System WING to support the classification of all intensive care patients into the Therapeutic Intervention Scoring System (TISS). The use of those functions has been pushed when health insurance bodies demanded evidence for the correct classification of ICU beds. This article presents an overview on this development from the start in just one intensive care unit to the complete coverage of six intensive care units and three intensive monitoring units with a total of 109 beds. For those units complete TISS data has been docu

Nurses' judgments regarding seclusion and restraint of psychiatric patients: a social judgment analysis.

Clinical judgment of psychiatric nurses was investigated using judgment analysis within the framework of social judgment theory. Nine nurses at a short-term psychiatric care facility made recommendations concerning restraint and seclusion for 80 patients described on paper in terms of 17 characteristics (cues). Nurses generally favored close observation of patients over seclusion and restraint, and information about current behavior and functioning had more impact on nurses' judgments than did patient history. Nurses had good insight into the nature of their own judgments. However, individual

Management of faecal incontinence in acutely ill patients.

Faecal incontinence is common in acutely ill patients, and has many predisposing factors. It is important that nursing staff understand the process of normal defecation as well as the adverse effects faecal incontinence has on patients, relatives and carers. New techniques are emerging for the management of faecal incontinence and it is important that nurses are aware of these.

Adaptation of the Training Resource Package to Strengthen Preservice Family Planning Training for Nurses and Midwives in Tanzania and Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Tanzania and Uganda have high total fertility and maternal mortality rates, and low contraceptive prevalence rates. High-quality preservice family planning education for nurses and midwives can improve the quality of sexual and reproductive health care, thereby improving health outcomes. DESCRIPTION OF INTERVENTION: In 2015, we worked with relevant stakeholders in Tanzania and Uganda through a series of surveys, assessments, and workshops to adapt modules of the Training Resource Package for Family Planning (TRP), an evidence-based global resource, to improve the quality of preser

Relationship Between Perspective-Taking, Boundary-Crossing Experiences, and Collaborative Practice in Discharge Planning Among Nurses: A Cross-Sectional Study.

AIM: Effective discharge planning requires ward nurses to understand the circumstances of receiving facilities. Perspective-taking-the active cognitive process of imagining another party's situation-may play a central role in promoting interfacility collaboration. This study examined a theoretical process model that positions perspective-taking, nurses' boundary-crossing experiences, and their collaborative practice in discharge planning. METHODS: A cross-sectional online survey was conducted with acute care nurses in Japan in 2021. Perspective-taking and collaborative practice in discharge p

Legal Implications in the Care of Orthopedic Patients: Serious Complications.

To help reduce potentially devastating outcomes from spinal complications and venous thromboembolism, it is essential for the bedside nurse to have a comprehensive understanding of risk factors and assessments. The orthopedic nurse carries a responsibility for accurately assessing, documenting, and mobilizing the team when abnormal changes occur. Nurses act as patient advocates. The bedside nurse must communicate with the physician. If a patient or family sues the health care team, after a careful screening of the case for merit, the legal process begins. A health care provider should never gi

The handover: uncovering the hidden practices of nurses.

This paper considers the ways in which the nursing handover involves a complex network of communication that impacts on nursing interactions. The critical ethnographic study upon which this paper is based involved a research group of six nurses who worked in one critical care unit. Data-collection methods involved professional journalling, participant observation, and individual and focus group interviews. The nursing handover took on many forms and served different purposes. At the start of a shift, the nurse coordinator of the previous shift presented a 'global' handover of all patients to o

The Transition to Critical Care: A Qualitative Study of New Nurses' and Mentors' Experiences and Challenges in the Intensive Care Unit.

BACKGROUND: During the orientation process in the intensive care unit (ICU), the experiences and challenges of new nurses and their mentor nurses often differ, leading to potential incompatibilities. STUDY DESIGN: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 21 nurses (10 mentors and 11 mentees) who worked in an ICU. Data were collected between March and May 2025. Four focus group interviews were conducted with mentors a

A modified grounded theory study of how psychiatric nurses work with suicidal people.

BACKGROUND: People with mental health problems continue to present a disproportionately high risk of suicide. Despite the relevance of suicide to psychiatric/mental health (P/MH) nurses, there is a documented paucity of research in this substantive area undertaken by or referring specifically to P/MH nurses; there is currently no extant theory to guide P/MH nursing care of the suicidal person. OBJECTIVES: Accordingly, this paper reports on a study undertaken to determine if P/MH nurses provide meaningful caring response to suicidal people, and if so how. DESIGN: The study used a modified gro
