Convergence-Related Visual Symptoms Across Occupations with Varying Near Visual Demands: A Cross-Sectional Study with Implications for Healthcare Policy.

PURPOSE: Convergence insufficiency (CI) is a common binocular vision disorder associated with visual discomfort during near tasks, yet occupational differences in convergence-related symptoms remain poorly understood. Therefore, this study aimed to compare convergence-related symptom burden across eight occupational categories using the validated Arabic Convergence Insufficiency Symptom Survey (CISS) and to identify which occupational groups show the greatest symptom burden. METHODS: In this cross-sectional survey, adults aged 18 years or older from the Qassim region of Saudi Arabia completed…

Carpal tunnel syndrome and occupational hand exposures: a Danish nationwide cohort study.

OBJECTIVES: The aim was to examine exposure-response relations between occupational hand exposures and carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) and to compare the relation between surgery-treated and non-surgery-treated CTS. The secondary aim was to study sex-specific differences in exposure-response relations. METHODS: We conducted a nationwide register-based cohort study of all persons born in Denmark (1945-1994). During follow-up (2010-2013), we identified first-time events of CTS. Occupational hand exposure estimates the year before each follow-up year were obtained by linking individual occupational

Risk factors associated with occupational noise-induced hearing loss in the Hispanic community health study/study of Latinos: A cross-sectional epidemiologic investigation.

The purpose of this study was to estimate the prevalence of occupational noise exposure and risk factors of occupational noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) in Hispanic/Latino adults included in the baseline wave of the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos collected from 2008 to 2011. Sequential multiple linear regression modeled the relationship between occupational NIHL (defined as a 3-, 4-, 6-kHz pure-tone average [PTA]) and occupation type, self-reported noise exposure, cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk score, and hearing protective device (HPD) use. The final model controlled fo

Occupational therapy driver assessments with mental health consumers: A mixed-methods study.

INTRODUCTION: Driving is an important occupation, which enables other recovery goals for adult mental health consumers. Multidisciplinary clinicians can support consumers to engage in safe driving practices, which may include referral to a specialist occupational therapy driver assessor. There is presently limited evidence to inform us about the role of occupational therapy driver assessors in mental health and the impact of such services for consumers. Therefore, this study aimed to describe the reasons for referral and the recommendations resulting from driver assessments with adult consumer

Agents of change: The role of healthcare workers in the prevention of nosocomial and occupational tuberculosis.

Healthcare workers (HCWs) play a central role in global tuberculosis (TB) elimination efforts but their contributions are undermined by occupational TB. HCWs have higher rates of latent and active TB than the general population due to persistent occupational TB exposure, particularly in settings where there is a high prevalence of undiagnosed TB in healthcare facilities and TB infection control (TB-IC) programmes are absent or poorly implemented. Occupational health programmes in high TB burden settings are often weak or non-existent and thus data that record the extent of the increased risk o

Effects of occupational therapy on hand function in patients with systemic sclerosis: a randomized controlled trial.

Hand involvement is one of the most disabling features of systemic sclerosis (SSc). Although occupational therapy is frequently employed in rheumatic conditions, its particular effects in SSc have not been studied in detail yet. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of a structured three-week occupational therapy program on hand function in SSc. This randomized controlled trial involved adult patients with SSc. Participants were randomly allocated to an intervention group that received a three-week occupational therapy program or a control group that received standard rheumatic care. Evaluat

Renal dysfunction of cadmium-exposed workers residing in a cadmium-polluted environment.

Human exposure to cadmium may occur in both occupational and general environments. We were interested in determining whether a combination of occupational and environmental exposure to cadmium results in different levels of severity of renal dysfunction relative to that arising from environmental or occupational exposure alone. We selected 44 residents, who once were employed in a smelter and lived in a cadmium-polluted area, as group A. Another 88 subjects, who never worked in the plant, but lived in the same area, were selected as group B. Group C consisted of 88 subjects who had no history

The Impact of a One-Time Group Pain Management Educational Session in Primary Care.

This study investigated the impact of a 1-hour group pain management session on pain beliefs, kinesiophobia, and occupational engagement delivered by occupational therapists in a primary care setting. Thirty participants with chronic pain completed pre- and post-assessments about their pain beliefs and kinesiophobia. Significant improvements were observed immediately after the session and maintained at a 1-month follow-up. Participants reported an increased understanding of pain, as well as improved satisfaction and confidence in their daily activities. These findings suggest that brief, occup

Occupational exposure and lung cancer risk.

The importance of occupation held longest as a risk factor for lung cancer was examined in a prospective study in Norway of 11,995 men, among whom 125 cases occurred in a follow-up from 1966 through 1978. Based on information about occupation held longest, the respondents were classified into 3 groups according to suspected exposure to respiratory carcinogens at the workplace. After stratification for age, place of residence and cigarette smoking, we found a highly significant relative risk of 2.6 for those judged to have experienced definite exposure versus the group with no workplace exposur

Effectiveness of a mindfulness program in changing attitudes to reduce work stress: a randomized controlled trial.

Worker safety is fundamental in any organization, so we propose a mindfulness-based program enhanced by virtual reality (VR) to improve attitudes toward preventing occupational risks and accidents and reduce work-related stress in an industrial company. The program was implemented as a complement to Behavior-Based Safety (BBS) of nine 30-min sessions delivered in person and continuously by two researchers; VR was used in three of the nine sessions. Each session was divided into motivation, knowledge development, transfer, evaluation, and closure sections. The control group worked only with BBS

Biomonitoring of Occupational Exposure to Mercury Among Dental Health Workers in LMICs: A Systematic Review.

Mercury exposure remains a significant occupational hazard for dental health workers, especially in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), due to the continued use of dental amalgam. This systematic review synthesizes the existing evidence on mercury exposure in dental professionals, focusing on biomonitoring data and associated health outcomes in LMICs. In December 2024, a comprehensive literature search was conducted across three electronic databases, PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science to identify primary research studies published from January 2014 onwards. Studies assessing occupational

The Qualitative Experiences of Youth With Disorders of Visual Efficiency.

AIM: Disorders of visual efficiency present with symptoms that can impact a young person's occupational engagement. Often these disorders result from concussion, but may also present idiopathically. Literature is available on the ocular implications of concussion and the symptoms of visual efficiency disorders, regardless of cause. Lacking is an understanding of the lived experience of diagnosed youth. Patient-reported experiences on life with disorders of visual efficiency can inform client-centered evaluation and treatment. The aim of this study was to describe the lived experience of youth
