NTP monograph on the systematic review of occupational exposure to cancer chemotherapy agents and adverse health outcomes.

INTRODUCTION: Many cancer chemotherapy agents are known carcinogens, genetic toxicants, and developmental toxicants. Secondary malignancies, such as therapy-related acute myeloid leukemia, are caused by cancer chemotherapy agents administered to patients for the treatment of cancer. Occupational exposure to these agents was first documented in the 1970s and continues to occur, despite the issuance of safe handling guidelines in 1980s. OBJECTIVES: Based on the evidence of carcinogenicity and genetic toxicity associated with direct administration of cancer chemotherapy agents and current eviden

The Use of Biomass for Electricity Generation: A Scoping Review of Health Effects on Humans in Residential and Occupational Settings.

The utilization of biomass for power generation has become more prevalent globally. To survey the status of evidence concerning resulting health impacts and to depict potential research needs, a scoping-review was conducted. Biomass life cycle phases of interest were the conversion and combustion phases. Studies from occupational and residential settings were considered. The scoping review was conducted systematically, comprising an extensive literature search, a guided screening process, in-duplicate data extraction, and critical appraisal. Two reviewers executed most review steps. Nine artic

Age- and Occupation-Based Public Health Considerations Related to Osteoarthritis of the Knee Joint: A Cadaveric Study.

OBJECTIVE: Osteoarthritis (OA) literature makes minimal suggestion regarding age of disease onset or preventative strategies to reduce risk for onset in various populations. In 2005, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimated that 33.6% of Americans 65+ years old were affected by OA; this cadaveric analysis suggests this is largely underestimated. The objective of this assessment is to identify at-risk populations for OA in the knee joint and make recommendations to prevent or delay disease onset. DESIGN: Morphometric analyses of the articular cartilage of the tibial plateau wer

Analysis of workplace compliance measurements of asbestos by the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (1984-2011).

The United States Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) maintains the Chemical Exposure Health Data (CEHD) and the Integrated Management Information System (IMIS) databases, which contain quantitative and qualitative data resulting from compliance inspections conducted from 1984 to 2011. This analysis aimed to evaluate trends in workplace asbestos concentrations over time and across industries by combining the samples from these two databases. From 1984 to 2011, personal air samples ranged from 0.001 to 175 f/cc. Asbestos compliance sampling data associated with the construction

Health effects associated with long-term occupational exposure of employees of a chlor-alkali plant to mercury.

This study aimed to evaluate possible health effects associated with long-term occupational exposure to low levels of mercury vapors. Forty-six subjects exposed to mercury and 65 healthy unexposed employees were studied. The subjects were administered a questionnaire on experienced symptoms and underwent clinical examinations as well as routine biochemical tests. Atmospheric and urinary concentrations of mercury were measured, too. Environmental concentrations of mercury were estimated to be 3.97 ± 6.28 μg/m(3) and urinary concentrations of mercury in exposed and referent groups were 34.30 ± 2

Measuring determinants of occupational health related behavior in Flemish farmers: an application of the Theory of Planned Behavior.

PROBLEM: Preventive interventions to reduce occupational injuries and health problems in farmers require the identification of factors that contribute to unsafe and health damaging behavior. This paper describes the development and validation of a self-report questionnaire, which measures the determinants of occupational health-related behaviors in farmers. METHOD: A representative sample of 283 Flemish farmers completed a provisional 135 item questionnaire based on the Theory of Planned Behavior, measuring four behaviors related to occupational health (machinery use, animal handling, prevent…

Impact of software and hardware technologies on occupational health and safety policies in Saudi Arabian oil refineries.

This article seeks to examine the impact of technology importation on occupational health and safety in both Saudi Arabian and U.S. oil refining industries. Technologies imported to the Saudi oil industry take two forms: hardware (sophisticated equipment to run oil facilities) and software (policies and regulations pertaining to workers' health and safety, and employment rights installed by Aramco's founding multinational companies). This study utilizes qualitative, historically oriented, cross-national case studies to compare and assess workers' health, safety, and rights in Saudi Aramco with…

The cross-sectional study of the health effects of occupational exposure to carbon disulfide in a Chinese viscose plant.

This article presents results of carbon disulfide exposure assessment in a Chinese viscose rayon factory and represents the cross-sectional study beginning phase of the occupational epidemiological project. The authors measured external exposure levels to carbon disulfide at a Chinese viscose rayon factory and monitored results as internal exposure indexes by testing urine samples of workers exposed to carbon disulfide levels. The rate at which carbon disulfide is metabolized by exposed subjects was demonstrated by 2-thio-thiazolidine-4-carboxylic acid (TTCA) concentrations in urine of exposed

[Problems in the current education and training system for occupational health physicians in Japan and strategies to solve them].

Occupational Health Physician (OHP) has been defined as a title in the Occupational Safety and Health Law since 1972 when the Law was first implemented. The Law stipulates that each manager of an establishment with 50 or more workers is requested to appoint an OHP from among qualified physicians. The small number of applicants to OHP, especially from the younger generation, has continued for more than twenty years causing the average age of OHPs in Japan to rise. The shortage of successors to OHPs in active service is also very serious. A rapid increase in the number of graduates from medical …

[THE LOW-QUALITY DRINKING WATER AT SHIP AS THREAT OF DAMAGING HEALTH OF SAILORS AND DEVELOPING OCCUPATIONAL DISEASES].

The normal professional activity of crew members of seagoing vessels requires permanent access to drinking water. The quality and safety of water are determined by combination of indicators characterizing physical, chemical, bacteriological, organoleptic and other properties. On particular vessels of merchant navy, drinking water may contain chemical substances or microorganisms contributing to development of intestinal infections and viral diseases. Furthermore, law-quality water on ship board can contribute to development of occupational diseases among sailors. The article reveals procedure

Factors contributing to the effective operation of occupational health and safety committees: A scoping review and conceptual framework.

INTRODUCTION: Scholarly evidence suggests that the effectiveness of Occupational Health and Safety Committees (OHSCs) may rely on various factors. However, it remains unclear which specific factors influence OHSC functionality and how they may be interconnected. This scoping review aimed to identify, map, and analyze empirical studies from four major bibliographic databases (Scopus, EBSCOhost, PubMed, and Web of Science) to explore which factors, attributes, or characteristics contribute to the effective operation of OHSCs. METHOD: Nine studies from 2014 to 2024 were identified across seven d…

The impact of emotional labor on mental health: A systematic review and meta-analysis of multi-occupational groups.

Emotional labor is a crucial occupational mental health issue in service-oriented economies, but research showed inconsistent links to mental health outcomes. This meta-analysis synthesized evidence by analyzing 27 observational studies from six databases using a tiered integrative approach. Results showed that high-exhaustion emotional labor (surface acting and emotional dissonance) correlated significantly positively with overall negative mental health outcomes, including depression, anxiety, insomnia, and general mental health (r = 0.213, P < 0.001). Specifically, surface acting correlated
