Automatic Segmentation of the Retinal Nerve Fiber Layer by Means of Mathematical Morphology and Deformable Models in 2D Optical Coherence Tomography Imaging.

Glaucoma is a neurodegenerative disease process that leads to progressive damage of the optic nerve to produce visual impairment and blindness. Spectral-domain OCT technology enables peripapillary circular scans of the retina and the measurement of the thickness of the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) for the assessment of the disease status or progression in glaucoma patients. This paper describes a new approach to segment and measure the retinal nerve fiber layer in peripapillary OCT images. The proposed method consists of two stages. In the first one, morphological operators robustly detect

Evanescent Wave Optical Fiber Sensors Using Enzymatic Hydrolysis on Nanostructured Polyaniline for Detection of β-Lactam Antibiotics in Food and Environment.

β-Lactam antibiotics such as penicillins and cephalosporins are extensively used for human infection therapy. Consistent unintended exposure to these antibiotics via food and water is known to promote antibiotic-resistant bacterial pathogenesis with high morbidity and mortality in humans. An optical enzymatic biosensor for rapid and point-of-use detection of these antibiotics in food and water has been developed and tested. Enzymatic hydrolysis of β-lactams, on the electroactive polyaniline nanofibers, altered the polymeric backbone of the nanofibers, from emeraldine base form to emeraldine sa

Optimal Intereye Difference Thresholds in Retinal Nerve Fiber Layer Thickness for Predicting a Unilateral Optic Nerve Lesion in Multiple Sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: The optic nerve is a frequent site for involvement in multiple sclerosis (MS). Optical coherence tomography (OCT) detects thinning of the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) in eyes of patients with MS and in those meeting criteria for clinically or radiologically isolated demyelinating syndromes. Current international diagnostic criteria for MS do not include the optic nerve as an imaging lesion site despite the high prevalence of acute optic neuritis (ON), or occult optic neuropathy, among early MS and clinically isolated syndrome patients; as well as most MS patients over the cours

1.55 μm hydrogen cyanide optical frequency-stabilized and 10 GHz repetition-rate-stabilized mode-locked fiber laser.

We describe a 1.55 μm hydrogen cyanide (HCN) optical frequency and repetition rate stabilized mode-locked fiber laser, where the optical frequency was locked to the P(10) HCN absorption line and the repetition rate was locked to 9.95328 GHz by using a microwave phase-locked loop. The optical frequency stability of the laser reached 5 x 10-11 with an integration time τ of 1 s. With a bidirectional pumping scheme, the laser output power reached 64.6 mW. To obtain a short pulse train, the average dispersion in the cavity was managed so that it was zero around 1.55 μm, resulting in a 0.95 ps pulse

Correction for tissue optical properties enables quantitative skin fluorescence measurements using multi-diameter single fiber reflectance spectroscopy.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Fluorescence measurements in the skin are very much affected by absorption and scattering but existing methods to correct for this are not applicable to superficial skin measurements. STUDY DESIGN/MATERIALS AND METHODS: The first use of multiple-diameter single fiber reflectance (MDSFR) and single fiber fluorescence (SFF) spectroscopy in human skin was investigated. MDSFR spectroscopy allows a quantification of the full optical properties in superficial skin (μa, μs' and γ), which can next be used to retrieve the corrected - intrinsic - fluorescence of a fluorophore

Predictive value of 1 month retinal nerve fiber layer thinning for deficits at 6 months after acute optic neuritis.

BACKGROUND: Retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) loss occurs with multiple sclerosis and after optic neuritis. Vision or RNFL changes at presentation of optic neuritis are not predictive of outcome, but vision loss at 1 month correlates with vision deficits at 6 months. We hypothesized that RFNL thinning at 1 month would predict RNFL loss at 6 months. METHODS: We prospectively studied the RNFL by optical coherence tomography (OCT) and scanning laser polarimetry (SLP), and determined the threshold field mean deviation, in 25 subjects with acute optic neuritis over a 6-month period. RNFL values, in

[Evaluation of stereometric parameters of optic disc and nerve fiber layer using HRT III. Report 2: factors influencing reproducibility].

29 patients with initial primary open angle glaucoma were examined using Heidelberg retinal tomograph III (HRT III), factors influencing measurements reproducibility and variability were studied. The following factors were found to cause outliers in stereometric parameters of the optic nerve head and retinal nerve fiber layer: standard reference height showing large difference of measurements or very high values, significant difference of scan depth, small optic disc, astigmatism, old age, interobserver variability of disc area (contour line position). Considering these factors one can determi
