We report the follow-up of a neonate with Pes equinovarus et adductus due to diastrophic dysplasia. The feet have been treated operatively by lengthening of the calcaneal tendon after initial redressement and casting. The normalized position is maintained by means of an removable plastic cast and later an instep raiser. Instructions for the maintenance are given.

The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of posterior and anterior walkers on the gait parameters of five children with spastic diplegic cerebral palsy. Computer-based kinematic analysis was used to investigate differences in gait. Gait laboratory data indicated that use of the posterior walker (1) facilitated more upright posture in these subjects, as seen in decreased trunk and hip flexion during stance phase; (2) decreased double stance time; and (3) increased walking velocity. The purpose of this study was to assess the effectiveness of a semirigid foot orthosis with a varus wedge on forefoot vertical forces in a 24-year-old female with a compensated rearfoot varus deformity. The results of this study indicate that the use of total contact semirigid foot orthoses reduces the forefoot force-time integral during walking, whether a rearfoot varus wedge was or was not used. The authors recommend that total contact construction of the foot orthoses be considered when a reduction of the forces acting on the forefoot is the goal of treatment.

Four thousand eighty one young boy soccer players ranging from age 7 to 12 were surveyed with a hope to establish the specific causative factors and the preventive measures for spondylolysis. Four hundred ninety six (12%) out of these players were found to have lumbago. Two hundred forty seven out of these boys with lumbago received X-ray examinations on which 122 were found to have lumbar lesions. We describe an instrumentation package built for the measurement of stabilizing forces in thoraco-lumbar-sacral-hip-knee-ankle orthoses. The system uses inexpensive and robust transducers mounted on the orthoses. This report describes a patient with intractable foot pain following frostbite in 1945. The patient continued to have progressively worsening foot pain, which eventually resulted in his losing his job and becoming wheelchair-bound. A combination of transcutaneous nerve stimulator, patellar, tendon weight-bearing/ankle foot orthoses (PTB/AFO), and crutches resulted in pain relief and good ambulatory status. A review of the literature regarding possible pathophysiology is made.

We reviewed the records of treatment of eighteen infants with congenital dysplasia, subluxation, or dislocation of the hip who had problems with the involved hip following treatment with the Pavlik harness.
