OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate the safety and efficacy of the Otologics Carina Middle Ear Transducer for treatment of mixed hearing loss through a case report.
METHODS: A Carina fully implantable device with the MET transducer for conductive applications was implanted in a 48-year-old woman suffering from right mixed hearing loss (mean PTA loss: 80 dB). A facial recess approach was used to access the middle ear. Sclerotic tissue obliterated the stapes footplate so the approach selected was to place the transducer directly on the round window. The mounting bracket was placed on the mastoid and the

A new prosthesis for malleus-grip stapedectomy is presented: the Clip(R) Piston MVP according to Häusler. The titanium piston is equipped with a self-fixing clip mechanism for automatic fixation of the prosthesis on the proximal malleus handle as well as a ball and socket articulation allowing easy introduction of the piston at an optimal angle into the oval window as well as adjustment of the insertion depth. A first series of malleus-grip stapedectomies performed with the Clip Piston MVP shows a hearing gain of 20 to 50 dB and a residual air-bone gap of < or =20 dB in all cases. In one patie

PURPOSE: The Vibrant Soundbridge active middle ear implant is indicated for the treatment of different types of hearing loss. Recently, a novel system for determining implant performance based on auditory brainstem response (ABR) was developed. A reference value for the expected ABR hearing thresholds is determined on the base of a substantial number of measurements in this work.
METHOD: ABRs were recorded in patients following VSB surgery. A standard ABR system was employed, utilizing an implemented optimized chirp stimulus, which was transmitted directly to the VSB via the AcoustiAP transmi

We retrospectively evaluated a series of 75 surgical revisions after stapedotomy for the treatment of otosclerosis, carried out between 2001 and 2015. Intraoperative findings, causes of failure, and surgical solutions using an angular prosthesis, Causse prosthesis, and glass-ionomer cement were reviewed. Audiometric results performed the day before revision surgery and 1 to 2 months postoperatively were also examined. An incus necrosis was discovered in 65 patients; 55 of whom had partial necrosis of the long process of the incus and 10 with total necrosis. In 5 patients, a dislocation of the

INTRODUCTION: Most implantable hearing aids currently available were developed to compensate the sensorineural hearing loss by driving middle ear structures (e.g., the ossicles). These devices are successfully used in round window (RW) stimulation clinically, although this was initially not the intended use. Here, a novel microactuator, specifically designed for RW stimulation, was tested in human temporal bones to determine actuator performance and applicability.
METHODS: Stapes footplate response to RW stimulation was determined experimentally in human temporal bones and the obtained sound

Digital volume tomography (DVT) is an extension of panoramic tomography. With this diagnostic technique, characterized by high resolution, a narrow section width (0.125 mm) and three-dimensional display, small pathological processes can be well visualized. Twenty-five patients with the history of a progressive hearing loss were examined with DVT (Accu-I-tomo, Morita, Japan). The results were compared with pre- and intraoperative findings to evaluate the diagnostic value of DVT in cases of erosion of the ossicular chain. With high resolution and artifact-free demonstration of the middle ear and

BACKGROUND: A growing number of studies conducted on stapes surgery have suggested that firm and adequate attachment of the prosthesis onto the long process of the incus plays a key role in surgical success. For this reason, a new prosthesis made of Nitinol characterized by "self-crimping" has been developed. Although better postoperative outcomes achieved with a Nitinol piston have been previously confirmed, the superiority of the Nitinol piston over the conventional manual-crimping prostheses remains controversial. The aim of this study was to determine the advantages of the Nitinol piston w
