The objective of the present work was to address earlier diagnostics of benign and malignant tumours in the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses with a view to its improvemen. The immunohistochemical study and the analysis of its results made possible not only differential diagnostics of the tumorigenic processes in the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses but also the estimation of the qualitative potential of each neoplasm. The immunohistochemical study demonstrated that the development of cancer of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses was associated with a substantial increase in the prolifer

Urothelial carcinoma with an inverted/endophytic growth pattern can occasionally mimic inverted urothelial papilloma and pose diagnostic challenges when assessing the presence or absence of invasion. Making these distinctions is critical for guiding appropriate treatment and improving patient outcomes. Here we conducted one of the largest studies to date of invasive high-grade urothelial carcinoma arising in a background of urothelial carcinoma with an inverted growth pattern. Primary sites examined included bladder, renal pelvis, ureter, and prostatic urethra. Clinicopathological parameters i

The accurate diagnosis of papillary urothelial carcinoma (PUC) is frequently challenging due to benign mimickers. Other than morphology-based diagnostic criteria, reliable biomarkers for differentiating benign and malignant papillary urothelial neoplasms remain elusive, so we sought to discover new markers to address this challenge. We first performed tandem mass spectrometry-based quantitative proteomics using diverse papillary urothelial lesions, including PUC, urothelial papilloma (UP), inverted urothelial papilloma, and cystitis cystica. We prioritized potential diagnostic biomarkers using

Sinonasal papilloma (SP), formerly Schneiderian papilloma, represents a rare group of benign epithelial neoplasms, most commonly identified in the sinonasal tract, while less frequently identified in the pharynx, lacrimal sac, and middle ear. Within temporal bone sinonasal-type papilloma (TBSP), there seems to be a much higher recurrence and malignant transformation risk than those identified in the sinonasal tract. Based on this clinical report and a review of the cases reported in the English literature, 49% of the 57 cases developed in the setting of concurrent or antecedent sinonasal or na

Sino-nasal smooth muscle tumours of uncertain malignant potential (SMTUMP) are very rare neoplasms of mesenchymal origin with features in between a benign leiomyoma and a leiomyosarcoma. We report a rare case of SMTUMP in a 44-year-old woman, who presented with vague symptoms of pharyngitis. Nasal endoscopy revealed a smooth mass in left nasal cavity. Contrast-enhanced CT and MRI scans showed features likely to be inverted papilloma or olfactory neuroblastoma or meningioma. Excision was planned and intraoperatively, frozen section revealed a probable spindle cell lesion. Final histopathologica

This study reviews the records of 21 patients with isolated sphenoid sinus disease who were treated by rigid endoscopic sphenoidotomy at the Nose and Sinus Unit, Department of Otolaryngology of Beilinson Medical Center, Israel. Diagnosis was made on the basis of history, rigid nasal endoscopy and computed tomography (CT) scan. The most frequent symptom was headache; no instances of 'pathognomonic' headache were found. Sphenoidotomy was performed through the area of the natural ostium. The pathological finding was infection in 11 patients, cyst in four patients, polyps in three patients, mucoco

PURPOSE: Sinonasal papilloma (SP) has a recognized potential for malignant transformation, most commonly into squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Well-established criteria for malignancy are lacking in SP and often depends on subjective features, such as stromal invasion without desmoplasia or assessment of dysplastic epithelium-to-stroma ratio, which can lead to under- or over-diagnosis, particularly in small biopsies. Additionally, emerging entities that mimic dysplastic papillomas necessitate re-evaluation of previously diagnosed “atypical/dysplastic SP” cases. METHODS: We conducted a retrospect

BACKGROUND: Endonasal endoscopic medial maxillectomy usually includes removal of the inferior turbinate (IT) even if it is not involved in the disease. A surgical approach is presented in which the IT is temporarily excised and then reinserted, followed by postoperative occlusion of the nose for at least 2 weeks.
METHODS: A retrospective case series of 12 patients with inverted papilloma (IP) of the maxillary sinus (Krouse II-III) and 2 patients with 3 mucoceles of the maxillary sinus after a Caldwell-Luc operation were reviewed. After a follow-up period of 12-80 months (28 months on average)

Background: Nasal and paranasal sinus masses can arise from a wide range of conditions, both benign and malignant, as well as congenital or acquired. Diagnosing these masses is often challenging, requiring a combination of nasal endoscopy, imaging studies, and histopathological analysis. Initial imaging frequently involves computed tomography or cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) to evaluate the bony anatomy of the nasal cavity and surrounding sinuses, while magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is typically used for detailed assessment of soft tissues and to aid in differential diagnosis when th

Calcified epithelial odontogenic tumor (CEOT) with extension to the maxillary, ethmoid and sphenoid sinuses is currently unreported. This extension poses a challenge for effective treatment, as CEOT is a benign neoplasm with contreversial potential aggressiveness. We report a case of CEOT that was previously misdiagnosed as an inverted papilloma. A segmental resection of the part of the tumor responsible for the symptoms was performed. Histology revealed polyhedral epithelial cells within an amorphous eosinophilic hyaline material containing round calcified structures and confirmed the diagnos

A 70-year-old woman presented with nasal obstruction and pain projecting onto the left cheek. The face seemed asymmetric including exophthalmus on the right side. Nasal endoscopic inspection revealed a sarcomatous tumor located on the middle turbinate. The CT showed that the tumor filled the left maxillary sinus completely and had eroded the maxillary bone. In addition, a round, sharply defined intraorbital neoplasm on the right side was identified in the contrast-enhanced MRI. Histological examination of the extirpated intraorbital tumour showed a neurilemmoma. A tissue biopsy of the intranas

We report a case of respiratory epithelial adenomatoid hamartoma of the left maxillary sinus that initially presented as a periapical radiolucency involving the left maxillary first molar. Respiratory epithelial adenomatoid hamartoma is a rare lesion that occurs in the nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses, and nasopharynx. Most cases are found in the nasal cavity associated with the posterior nasal septum. Involvement of the maxillary sinus is very unusual, and only one other report of a respiratory epithelial adenomatoid hamartoma involving the maxillary antrum was found in a search of the literat

Isolated sphenoethmoid recess (SER) polyps are rare. They usually arise from the sphenoid sinus. We report six patients with SER polyps as the only abnormal clinical finding at initial presentation. All cases were investigated with outpatient biopsy and computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance (MR) imaging. Pre-operative histology revealed three cases of inflammatory disease, two cases with inverted papilloma, and one case of an ectopic pituitary adenoma arising from the sphenoid sinus. One of the inflammatory polyps arose directly from the mucosa around the sphenoid ostium. The other fi

Over the past 10 to 20 years, endoscopic endonasal surgery has become for many teams the preferred treatment for sinonasal tumors. Technical advances in the field of surgical instrumentation (good visualization, hemostasis…) and the progress of imaging guidance (to avoid neurovascular complication) has made those procedures simpler and safer. Nevertheless, endonasal endoscopic procedures require a trained surgical team of ENT specialist and neurosurgeon. Endoscopic endonasal surgery has been reported to be feasible for all types of sinonasal tumors whether benign tumors such as inverted papill

PURPOSE: Intraductal salivary gland tumors represent a distinct and intriguing subset of salivary gland neoplasms, characterized by their origin within the ductal epithelium. These tumors encompass a wide range from benign entities such as intraductal papilloma to the malignant forms such as intraductal carcinoma (IDC). IDC often present as well-circumscribed mass due to their intraductal growth pattern, thereby mimicking benign neoplasms and posing diagnostic challenges. Recent advances have led to the molecular characterization of IDC, which may have been previously unrecognized or misclassi

BACKGROUND: Blood-stained tears can indicate occult malignancy of the lacrimal drainage apparatus. This study reviews data on patients presenting with blood in their tears and the underlying cause for this rare symptom.
METHODS: Patients presenting with blood in their tears, identified over a 20-year period, were retrospectively collected from a single tertiary ophthalmic hospital's database and analysed.
RESULTS: 51 patients were identified, the majority female (58%) with a mean age of 55 years. Most cases were unilateral (96%) with blood originating from the nasolacrimal drainage system in

Schneiderian papilloma (SP) is classified into three types: inverted, oncocytic, and exophytic. Malignant transformation occurs in 10% of SP; most are inverted and oncocytic types. Malignant transformation of polypoid exophytic SP is exceptional; only two cases have been reported in the English literature. A 58-year-old man consulted our hospital because of nasal obstruction. Nasal endoscopy and imaging modalities showed a polyp in the right nasal cavity. Biopsy findings showed compatibility with SP. However, since fludeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) showed signals, polypect
