[Effectiveness of ivermectin in Strongyloides westeri cases in foals].

Efficacy of Ivermectin in combating Strongyloides westeri infection of foal. The efficacy of Ivermectin and Mebendazol in combating spontaneous Strongyloides westeri infections in foals has been tested by examining faecal egg output reduction. Ivermectin as a paste formulation was given to sucking foals and pregnant mares in a single dosage of 200 micrograms/kg bodyweight by oral administration. A high efficacy of Ivermectin in combating patent Strongyloides westeri infection could be demonstrated; no side effects have been observed. Mebendazol at a dosage rate of 8 mg/kg did not yield satisfa

[Paragonimus uterobilateralis as the cause of 3 cases of human paragonimiasis in Gabon].

During 1981, three cases of pulmonary paragonimiasis were diagnosed and successfully treated at the Albert Schweitzer Hospital, Lambarene, Gabon. Circumstances prevented our receiving eggs for identification of the lung fluke species involved. The history revealed that all the patients originated from the same small village Mitoné, some 10 km north of Lambarene. Extensive testing in the region failed to reveal further cases. Our efforts, therefore, were concentrated on the study of the intermediate crustacean hosts responsible for the human infections. We examined 90 fresh-water crabs of the s

Not just a walk in the park: Occurrence of intestinal parasites in dogs roaming recreational parks in Chandigarh, Northern India.

Chandigarh, a city in North-west India, has numerous parks and recreational areas where stray dogs roam freely and pet dogs are exercised. This allows for extensive human-dog interaction, which may pose a public health threat. The aim of this study was to determine the occurrence of gastrointestinal parasites of public health importance, and their seasonal variation, in canine faecal samples obtained from recreational parks in Chandigarh. A total of 212 samples were collected from 10 parks during the winter (January 2015; N = 107) and monsoon season (September 2015; N = 105), to assess the pre

Endoparasite loads and the efficacy of conventional anthelmintics against gastrointestinal nematodes in captive European bison.

Although little information exists on the efficacy of deworming in wild ruminants, gastrointestinal nematodes have been found to demonstrate increasing drug resistance. The spread of drug-resistant strains may be increased by transmission among livestock and susceptible wildlife species, thus posing a potential threat to endangered species, such as the European bison. The aim of the study was twofold: to identify the parasite loads in captive European bison with the use of coprological techniques, and to test the influence of other nearby ungulates on the richness of bison parasitofauna. Addit

A single oral dose of celecoxib-loaded solid lipid nanoparticles for treatment of different developmental stages of experimental schistosomiasis mansoni.

Schistosomiasis, a neglected tropical parasitic disease, is associated with severe pathology, mortality and economic loss. The treatment and control of schistosomiasis depends mainly on a single dose of praziquantel (PZQ). Drug repurposing and nanomedicine attract great attention to improve anti-schistosomal therapy. Previously, we reported that celecoxib (CELE), the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, showed potent anti-schistosomal efficacy in an oral dose of 20 mg/kg/day for five days against different developmental stages of Schistosoma mansoni (S. mansoni) infection in mice. The aim of

High variability in the number of E. multilocularis eggs in cat feces collected in the field.

Echinococcus multilocularis is the causative agent of alveolar echinococcosis that is considered as the most severe parasitic disease in Europe. The contribution of cat to environmental contamination by E. multilocularis is generally considered as extremely low based on results of experimental infections and worm burden estimations from natural infections. However, the recent collection of numerous cat feces from kitchen gardens in high endemic areas and the detection of E. multilocularis DNA in a significant number of these feces raise the question of the risk of human transmission from cats.

In vivo anthelmintic efficacy, hematobiochemical and antioxidant effects of Swertia chirata in Barbari goats naturally infected with Haemonchus contortus.

Haemonchus contortus is one of the most economically devastating gastrointestinal nematodes in small ruminants, with escalating anthelmintic resistance threatening sustainable parasitic control. The present study evaluated the in vivo efficacy, safety, and physiological effects of an aqueous whole-plant extract of Swertia chirata against naturally occurring H. contortus infections in Barbari goats under field conditions. Thirty goats with faecal egg counts (FEC) ≥ 1000 eggs/g were randomly allocated into five groups (n = 6): untreated control, closantel (10 mg/kg), and S. chirata extract at 50

Pathology of Haemonchus contortus in New World camelids in the southeastern United States: a retrospective review.

Most small ruminant farms in tropical climates are plagued by Haemonchus contortus, a hematophagous, abomasal parasite. Heavy burdens of this parasite can cause anemia, hypoproteinemia, weight loss, and mortality in susceptible animals. Haemonchus contortus is becoming a major health concern in New World camelids as well, namely llamas (Llama glama) and alpacas (Vicugna pacos), yet little research has been conducted regarding its prevalence or pathology in these species. Herein, we present a retrospective review of llamas and alpacas that were admitted to The University of Georgia Veterinary T

Association of sequence variation in SOCS2 gene with susceptibility to Heamonchus contortus infection in sheep.

Haemonchosis is a fatal disease of livestock caused by Haemonchus contortus (HC) - a blood-sucking parasite of the abomasum. This parasite is quite prevalent in sheep, causing mortality and production losses. The suppressor of cytokine signalling-2 (SOCS2) gene plays a vital role in sheep's immune response against gastrointestinal parasites. This study aimed to estimate the parasitic load of HC in three sheep breeds (Balkhi, Ghalji, and Michni) through faecal egg count and to identify SNPs in the SOCS2 gene associated with the susceptibility of sheep against HC. The results showed that the mea

Quantitative trait loci for resistance to trichostrongylid infection in Spanish Churra sheep.

BACKGROUND: For ruminants reared on grazing systems, gastrointestinal nematode (GIN) parasite infections represent the class of diseases with the greatest impact on animal health and productivity. Among the many possible strategies for controlling GIN infection, the enhancement of host resistance through the selection of resistant animals has been suggested by many authors. Because of the difficulty of routinely collecting phenotypic indicators of parasite resistance, information derived from molecular markers may be used to improve the efficiency of classical genetic breeding. METHODS: A tot

Schistosoma mansoni: maturation rate and drug susceptibility of different geographic isolates.

The fecundities and drug susceptibilities of Schistosoma mansoni isolates from Senegal, Puerto Rico, and Kenya have been examined in mice. The Senegal parasite, obtained from the field in 1993, was shown to have a longer prepatent period (eggs first recovered in the faeces on Day 46 after infection) than those of two isolates, from Puerto Rico and Kenya, that had been maintained for a long period in the laboratory (faecal eggs recovered on Days 38 and 36 after infection, respectively). A Kenyan isolate, also collected from the field in 1994, was shown to mature more slowly than the laboratory-

Circadian variation of ova excretion, proteinuria, hematuria, and leukocyturia in urinary schistosomiasis.

Urine samples from five boys (7 to 9 years) with urinary schistosomiasis were collected at 6 A.M. and thereafter at 3-hr intervals until 9 P.M. on 5 consecutive days. Ova excretion in the urine, proteinuria (PU), erythrocyturia (EU), and leucocyturia (LU) were assessed quantitatively. Egg excretion followed a circadian rhythm with a peak at 12 noon and was paralleled closely by pathological PU. Maximal erythrocyturia occurred at 6 P.M., whereas leucocyturia revealed two distinct peak times. Taking the congruent patterns of egg excretion and PU together with the results of qualitative urinary p

A study on fasciolopsiasis in Bangladesh.

A study of infection with F. buski in children has been carried out in a rural area of Bangladesh. The rate of ova production was inversely related to the worm load. Subjects infected with F. buski had higher total leukocyte counts than the control subjects, but the two groups were not different with regard to haemoglobin level and other parameters of nutrition. These findings have been discussed. There was a high rate of infection (36.2%). Up to the age of 7 years, males and females were equally affected, but above this age the females predominated.
