Assessing Child-to-Parent Violence With the Child-to-Parent Violence Questionnaire, Parents' Version (CPV-Q-P): Factor Structure, Prevalence, and Reasons.

Child-to-parent violence has dramatically risen in the last decade, becoming a concerning issue in many countries, so research on this issue has also increased. However, most of the studies on this topic have been conducted with samples of adolescents, and very few with samples of parents. In addition, the variety of assessment instruments does not reflect the elements of this type of violence. Thus, the current study was aimed to examine the factor structure, reliability, and validity of the Child-to-parent Violence Questionnaire, parents' version (CPV-Q-P), in a sample of Spanish parents of

The Toxic Triad: Childhood Exposure to Parental Domestic Violence, Parental Addictions, and Parental Mental Illness as Factors Associated With Childhood Physical Abuse.

Childhood physical abuse can result in serious behavioral, mental health, and physical health conditions. There is a need for improved strategies to identify households in which childhood physical abuse occurs. This article explores three potential correlates of childhood physical abuse: childhood exposure to parental domestic violence, parental addictions, and parental mental illness. Secondary analyses were conducted using the regionally representative 2010 Brief Risk Factor Surveillance Survey (BRFSS) of adults (n = 9,241 men, n = 13,627 women) and the analyses were replicated in the 2012 B

Are parenting programmes effective at scale? Associations with violence against adolescent girls, parenting and mental health in real-world delivery across eight African countries: a meta-analysis of pre-post surveys.

INTRODUCTION: Evidence-based parenting programmes are widely used to prevent violence against children and improve parenting and mental health. Despite hundreds of randomised trials, little is known about their outcomes when delivered at scale within routine delivery. This study assesses the WHO-endorsed and UNICEF-endorsed Parenting for Lifelong Health programme for caregivers and adolescents, delivered through non-governmental organisation and government in Botswana, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Eswatini, South Africa, South Sudan, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe, with support from th…

Parenting Stress, Parental Attitudes, and Parent-Reported Autism Symptoms of Children and Adolescents With Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Network Analysis and Subgroup Comparison by Severity.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) presents substantial challenges for individuals and families, particularly through elevated parenting stress. Previous research has established that parenting stress is influenced by multiple interrelated factors, including parental attitudes toward ASD and parent-reported autism symptoms. Yet, the structural relations among these factors remain poorly understood. This study applied network analysis to delineate the interconnections among parenting stress, parental attitudes, and parent-reported autism symptoms in 997 parents of children and adolescents with ASD …

Parental Opioid Misuse and Adolescent-Reported Positive Parenting Behaviors: An Analysis of Parent-Child Dyads From the National Survey on Drug Use and Health.

PURPOSE: Past studies emphasize positive associations between parental opioid misuse and adverse outcomes for children and families yet neglect to understand whether opioid misuse interferes with positive parenting behaviors, such as checking on homework or engaging in serious discussions with an adolescent child. METHOD: We analyzed data collected from parent-adolescent dyads (N = 24,900) surveyed for the 2014-2019 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, specifically examining relationships between parents' past-year opioid misuse or heroin use and adolescent-reported parenting behaviors. R…

Parent-to-Parent Coaching for Parents of Children Requiring Invasive Mechanical Ventilation with Incomplete Home Health Nursing Teams: A Pilot Support and Empowerment Model.

Parents of children requiring invasive home mechanical ventilation (IMV) rely on, and are expected to manage, complex home health nursing care teams. However, ubiquitous shortages in the pediatric home healthcare workforce leave most families with incomplete nursing support, with negative impacts on child and family well-being. Parents report feeling stressed, overwhelmed, and unsupported by community healthcare services. Parent-to-parent support programs in other populations of children with disabilities have been shown to embolden parents with practical solutions, emotional support, and soci

Does parental mental health mediate the association between parents' perceived stress and parent-infant bonding during the early COVID-19 pandemic?

BACKGROUND: The spread of the COVID-19 virus was declared a pandemic in March 2020. New restrictions such as 'lockdowns' and 'social distancing' created challenges for individuals' work-life balance, financial situation, family life, and physical and mental health. The global population's stress levels rose in response to these changes, leading to a widespread deterioration of mental health. One group particularly affected was parents of infants and very young children. Poor parental mental health may disrupt parent-infant bonding, with negative consequences for infant well-being and developme

Supportive parenting moderates the link between parents' and children's internalizing symptoms in families of color.

Parent and child internalizing symptoms are linked, and recent efforts have been made to identify protective factors that may disrupt this association. We examined whether children's perceptions of their parent as a secure base and parents' perceptions of their nurturant-involved parenting moderate the links between parent and child internalizing symptoms. Participants included children (N = 167, Mage = 11.5 years, SD = 2.6 years; 49.1% girls) who identified as Black/African American (60%) or Hispanic/Latino (40%) and their parents. Children reported on their depressive symptoms, generalized a…

Is early childhood a developmental period for parents? Changes in parenting strengths in low-income families.

The present study examined profiles of parental strengths and changes in these strengths across the transition from toddlerhood to early childhood. Participants were 4,520 mothers with low incomes from the Future of Families and Child Wellbeing Study. Latent class analysis was used to identify unique classes of parental strengths at child ages 3 and 5, and latent transition analysis was used to examine transitions in class membership across this period. Four classes of parental strengths were identified at child ages 3 and 5. Parents were characterized as "psychologically regulated with interp

The Development of Parental Knowledge of Their Child in NNU and PICU: An Exploratory Qualitative Study of Parents' Experiences.

BACKGROUND: Advancements in neonatal and paediatric intensive care have improved survival of children born very preterm or with complex health conditions. However, many of these children will subsequently require admission to paediatric intensive care. How families navigate experiences and knowledge across these different admissions remains poorly understood. AIM: To explore the experiences of parents with a child admitted to both a neonatal unit (NNU) and a paediatric intensive care unit (PICU) with a focus on the development of parental knowledge. STUDY DESIGN: We conducted an exploratory

The role of parent-child attachment in toddlers' executive functions: a longitudinal two-parent study.

This longitudinal study examined the respective contributions of father-child and mother-child attachment to children's later executive functions (EF) during toddlerhood. The sample included 88 Canadian toddlers (51% boys) and their parents (89% White) visited in their homes at about 13 (T1) and 19 (T2) months of age. At T1, father-child and mother-child interactions were evaluated using the Attachment Q-Set. At T2, toddlers' hot and cool components of EF were assessed using behavioral tasks. Findings from two sets of analyses converged to suggest that developing secure attachment relationship

Tracing the Impact of Parenting and Filial Piety Beliefs on Chinese Parent-Child Closeness and Conflict.

This study investigated longitudinal dyadic pathways from parents' and adult children's perceived parenting styles to relationship closeness and conflict, with dual filial piety beliefs as potential mediators. A total of 153 parent-child dyads from China participated in a two-wave survey conducted over a one-year interval. At Wave 1, participants reported on perceived parenting styles (authoritative and authoritarian), dual filial piety beliefs (reciprocal and authoritarian), and relationship closeness and conflict. At Wave 2, both parents and children reassessed their perceptions of relations…

A Comparative Network Analysis of Parenting Stress and Affiliate Stigma in Parents of Children With ASD and ADHD.

Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) present behavioural problems that contribute to caregiver stress and stigma. While trait mindfulness is considered a protective factor, the underlying mechanisms buffering the distress may differ due to differences in children's problem behaviours. This study used network analysis to compare the interplay of parenting stress, affiliate stigma, child problem behaviours and parental trait mindfulness in parents of children with ASD (n = 174) versus ADHD (n = 108). We constructed psychological network…
