The Gulf Coast Aerosol Research and Characterization Study ([GC-ARCH], also known as the Houston Fine Particulate Matter [PM] Supersite) examined the spatial and temporal variability in fine PM source contributions and composition and the physical and chemical processes that govern PM formation and transformation in southeastern Texas. This was accomplished through the analysis of data collected in a 16-month field sampling program (August 2000 through November 2001). Three core sites and approximately 15 peripheral sites, jointly operated by the study team and the Texas Commission on Environm…

In November 1985 a research program started, with the aim to evaluate seasonal variations in the concentrations of organic and inorganic pollutants in the atmosphere of Genoa. The program provided for the collection of samples of airborne particulate in five different areas with distinct urban characteristics. First results for chromium, lead, and thallium concentrations in an industrial and in an urban area are reported. Lead showed the highest concentration at both locations (geometric mean: 1.037 and 0.476 microgram/m3, respectively) and appeared to be little affected by seasonal variation.

INTRODUCTION: Ambient air pollutants and temperature may influence the clinical severity of hyperemesis gravidarum (HG), but their relative contributions remain unclear. This study aimed to determine whether particulate matter (PM₁₀), sulfur dioxide (SO₂), and ambient temperature were independently associated with severe ketonuria in pregnant women with HG.
METHODS: This retrospective observational study included 211 pregnant women diagnosed with HG. Clinical severity was defined by ketonuria category (severe ≥2 + vs. non-severe <2+). Covariates (maternal age, gestational week, BMI, Healthy E…

Environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFRs) in atmospheric particulate matter (PM) are of increasing concern because of their potential health risks. This study systematically investigated the occurrence and characteristics of EPFRs in PM2.5 (particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter ≤ 2.5 μm), PM10 (particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter ≤ 10 μm), and total suspended particles (TSP). Mass-normalized EPFRs concentrations and g factors were determined, human exposure was evaluated using an equivalent-cigarette model, and size-dependent formation mechanisms were examined thro…

Gravimetric quantification of atmospheric particulate matter (PM) can be biased by particle-bound water persisting after filter conditioning, with magnitude depending on chemical composition, mixing state, and the protocol's operational definition of "water." Here, particle-bound water was measured by Karl Fischer (KF) coulometric titration with stepwise heating to distinguish weakly adsorbed from strongly retained fractions. Thirty-five single-component chemicals and certified reference materials were analyzed at two loadings (0.6 and 2.0 mg; summer and winter loads), alongside a powder mixtu…

Background/Objectives: Inguinal hernia and hydrocele are common pediatric surgical conditions resulting from failed obliteration of the processus vaginalis during fetal development. Although prenatal exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) has been linked to adverse perinatal outcomes and congenital anomalies, its role in structurally defined pediatric surgical diseases remains unclear. We examined the association between maternal PM2.5 exposure during pregnancy and the risk of inguinal hernia or hydrocele in offspring. Methods: We performed a retrospective cohort study of 1093 mother-offs…

Antimony (Sb) and its compounds are recognized as global hazardous pollutants due to their potential carcinogenicity and long-range transport characteristics. Unintentional Sb emissions from industrial activities are critical yet understudied for exposure assessment and control strategies. Here, we assessed the atmospheric emissions and spatial distributions of Sb in fine particulate matter samples from 118 full-scale industrial plants covering 13 industrial sectors. Secondary copper smelting exhibited the highest Sb concentration, with an average value of 286.34 μg/g. Emission factors of Sb f…

The impact of PM1 (particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter ≤ 1 μm) exposure on asthma risk during specific fetal lung development windows, and its potential mediation by DNA methylation, remains understudied. Thus, we conducted a nested case-control study from the Prenatal Environments and Offspring Health cohort with children having asthma/wheezing. The results revealed a positive correlation between average prenatal PM1 exposure and childhood asthma/wheezing risk (HR = 1.39, 95 % CI: 1.02, 1.90), especially during the pseudoglandular period. PM1 exposure was negatively correlated with n…

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common sleep-related breathing disorder. OSA affects approximately 936 million individuals globally and 176 million in China. Nevertheless, the effects of PM2.5 constituents on OSA remains unclear. We aimed to evaluate long-term impacts of PM2.5 components [ammonium (NH4+), sulfate (SO42-), nitrate (NO3-), organic matter (OM), and black carbon (BC)] on OSA indices and identity the dominant component. We carried out a cross-sectional study, incorporating long-term exposures utilizing a database (n = 3925) encompassing 21 cities in Guangdong Province from 2005

BACKGROUND: Sleep apnea (SA), a widespread disorder linked to heart disease, affects > 1 billion people globally. Although fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is suspected to worsen this condition, the specific role of individual PM2.5 constituents-how genetics might amplify their harm-remains unclear.
RESEARCH QUESTION: Are long-term exposures to PM2.5 constituents (elemental carbon [EC], organic matter [OM], sulfate, nitrate, and ammonium) associated with incident SA, and does genetic susceptibility modify these associations?
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: In this prospective cohort study of 495,07…

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Cirrhosis is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality, and acute decompensation represents a pivotal event in its natural history. While long-term exposure to air pollution has been associated with liver disease progression, evidence on short-term effects remains limited. We investigated whether daily fluctuations in fine particulate matter (PM2.5) trigger acute decompensation in patients with cirrhosis.
METHODS: We conducted a nationwide, time-stratified case-crossover study using the Korean National Health Insurance Service database. Adults with cirrhosis from 2006 to 202…

We aimed to determine whether exposure to particulate matter PM, measured as the oxidative potential (OP) of filters collected from 24 h personal samplers, is associated with increased airway inflammation in asthmatic and non-asthmatic volunteers. Forty-two adult asthmatic patients (25 women and 17 men) and 37 matched controls wore a personal sampler for a day collecting fine (PM2.5) and coarse (PM10-2.5) particles, and determining 24 h afterwards their fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO). The PM-OP was determined by two methods: dithiothreitol (DTT) and ascorbic acid (AA) being OP levels d…

Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) air pollution constitutes a significant hazard to the well-being and survival of children everywhere, posing particularly dire risks to neonates. However, the neonatal disease burden attributable to PM2.5 pollution remains unclear worldwide. Data on neonatal diseases attributable to PM2.5 pollution were obtained and collected from the Global Burden of Disease Study (GBD) 2021. The main outcome was the age-standardized disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) rate (ASDR) and age-standardized mortality rate (ASMR) per 100 000 population of neonatal diseases caused b…

Infants and children may be potentially susceptible to harm from ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) pollution because of the following characteristics (1) immature immune systems (2) not yet fully developed respiratory systems (3) possess a higher absorption rate of pollutants, and (4) and daily activities may expose infants to varying levels. However, few studies have examined the possible correlation between exposure to PM2.5 and mortality in infants. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the association between long-term exposure to ambient PM2.5 and post-neonatal mortali…

Exposure to air pollutants has a direct impact on human health, resulting in increased mortality rates. Airborne particulate matter (PM) has major adverse effects on health and can be classified as high-risk respiratory particles (fine/PM2.5, aerodynamic diameter < 2.5 µm) or thoracic particles (coarse/PM10, aerodynamic diameter < 10 µm). In addition, airborne PM can carry microbial communities that alter the commensal microbiota and lead to dysbiosis. Our aim was to synthesize the current research evidence describing the association between air pollution exposure and the microbiome compositio…

Particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter of less than 2.5 µm (PM2.5) is one of the criteria air pollutants that (1) serve as an essential carrier of airborne toxicants arising from combustion-related events including emissions from industries, automobiles, and wildfires and (2) play an important role in transient to long-lasting cognitive dysfunction as well as several other neurological disorders. A systematic review was conducted to address differences in study design and various biochemical and molecular markers employed to elucidate neurological disorders in PM2.5 -exposed humans an…

Accumulating evidence suggests that exposure to ambient airborne PM2.5 increases the risk of primary ovarian insufficiency (POI). However, whether ferroptosis, a newly discovered type of cell death involved in PM2.5-induced lung injury and fibrosis, is involved in PM2.5-induced POI has not been determined. This study aimed to verify the involvement of PM2.5-induced ferroptosis in ovarian dysfunction and further demonstrate that melatonin inhibits ferroptosis by activating the Nrf2 signaling pathway to ameliorate POI in vivo and in vitro. In our study, PM2.5 promoted iron accumulation and induc
