BACKGROUND: Erythema infectiosum is the most common clinical manifestation of Parvovirus B19 infection although it has also been associated with rheumatologic diseases and various types of systemic vasculitides. Acute hepatitis and benign myositis however are rarely reported in association with Parvovirus B19 infection.
CASE PRESENTATION: Here we report a 14-year old male, who developed acute hepatitis and benign myositis associated with erythema infectiosum following Parvovirus B19 infection.
CONCLUSION: Parvovirus B19 infection has rarely been associated with acute hepatitis and exceptiona…

Human parvovirus B19 (B19V) infection in immunocompetent patients usually has a mild clinical course, but during pregnancy it can cause serious and even fatal complications in the fetus. The most common clinical presentation of B19V infection is erythema infectiosum and in this case laboratory confirmation is required for differentiation from other exanthematous diseases. Measles and rubella negative sera collected in Belarus between 2005 and 2008 from 906 patients with a rash and fever were screened for B19V infection by ELISA. More than 35% of the samples (322/906) were positive for B19V. Th…

BACKGROUND: Studies assessing the risk of cytomegalovirus (CMV), parvovirus B19 (B19V), rubella and varicella infections in female child-care personnel may help define appropriate preventive strategies during pregnancy.
METHODS: Serologic testing for all four viruses and a self-administered questionnaire to identify risk factors were conducted on child-care staff aged 20-50 years old and on a reference group of women.
RESULTS: In 395 exposed and 382 reference women, CMV, B19V, rubella and varicella seroprevalence were 69.4, 79.4, 98.7, 100% for exposed women, and 41.1, 68.0, 98.2, 99.7% for …

BACKGROUND: There is disagreement in the current evidence for viral aetiologies in the pathogenesis of Behçet's disease (BD).
OBJECTIVES: T … knowledge, this is the first study that provides evidence for a possible causal link between BD and parvovirus B19, and our data suggest the presence of the virus, particularly in intact, nonulcerative skin lesions of BD. Limitations to this study include the limited number of participants, and the fact that the exact source of B19 DNA was undetected.

The feto-pathogenic association of parvovirus B19 (B19) has been sparingly studied in women with abortion, but not in women with recurrent spontaneous abortions (RSA). Serum samples from 116 women with RSA who were pre-screened for S-TORCH, Chlamydia trachomatis infections, anatomical, chromosomal, endocrinal abnormality and Rh incompatibility and those who had no such known causes of abortion were included in the study. Sera were also collected from 136 normal pregnant women and 120 normal non-pregnant women as disease and normal control respectively. All sera were tested at 1:400 dilutions f…

Human parvovirus B19 is the agent that causes erythema infectiosum (fifth disease), a disease that is generally benign and self-limiting. This virus also is associated with severe disease in hemolytic or immunocompromised patients. It rarely causes meningoencephalitis in healthy children. Herein we present the case of a 10-year-old healthy girl with refractory status epilepticus possibly owing to human parvovirus B19 encephalitis who was successfully treated with high-dose corticosteroids. To our knowledge, this is the first report of human parvovirus B19 encephalitis complicated by refractory…

The seroprevalence and the risk of perinatal transmission of rubella virus (RV) and human parvovirus B19 were assessed in 439 Jordanian pregnant women. Seroprevalence data indicate that 43.7%, 48.7% and 19% of women are susceptible to RV, parvovirus B19 infections and both, respectively. A total of 12.2% and 20.2% of RV susceptible women are at the first and second trimester of gestation, respectively. They are at risk of bearing infants with congenital rubella syndrome (CRS). However, 15% and 23% of parvovirus B19 susceptible women are at the first and second trimester of gestation, respectiv…

Parvovirus B19 (PVB19) is a non-trivial cause of morbidity and mortality in young individuals from diseases such as aplastic anemia and hydrops fetalis. Curiously, given this significant disease burden, the one genetic phenotype known to protect against PVB19 infection--the p red-cell phenotype characterized by the lack on any P group antigens on erythrocytes--is extremely rare with a prevalence of only approximately 1/200,000. One explanation is that PVB19 is a new virus to the Old World. It is pointed out in this paper that recently developed powerful genetic methods can be used to test this…

BACKGROUND: While antibodies directed against proteinase 3 (PR3-ANCA) and myeloperoxidase (MPO-ANCA) have a high specificity for the diagnosis of systemic vasculitis, they may also be found as an epiphenomenon of acute viral infection.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether positive ANCA test results may be a common feature of acute parvovirus B19 infection.
METHODS: Sera were analysed from 1242 patients from a rheumatology outpatient clinic for reactivity with parvovirus B19 and EBV antibodies. They were tested for the presence of PR3-ANCA and MPO-ANCA, along with sera known to contain IgM antib…

We report an exanthematic outbreak in a school of Banderaló town, located in the district of General Villegas, Buenos Aires province, Argentina. This outbreak affected 21 individuals, with a wide range of age (out of a total population of 1400). The observed clinical manifestations were exanthema and in some cases fever, asthenia, arthropathies and myalgia. The presence of specific IgM antibodies against measles, rubella and human parvovirus B19 were investigated. Analysis of IgM antibodies to parvovirus B19 by ELISA was positive in 90.8% of the cases and viremia was detected in 66.7% of the p…

Parvovirus B19 infection is often associated with acute and chronic joint diseases thus suggesting an etiologic role for the virus in these pathologies. In this work, we looked for a possible correlation between Parvovirus B19 infection and certain types of chronic inflammatory rheumatisms. We therefore, screened a population of 100 patients with different chronic inflammatory rheumatismal affections for serological markers of Parvovirus B19 infection. All patients were Tunisians of both sexes, who presented at the service of Rheumatology of the Charles Nicolle Hospital, Tunis. One hundred blo…

Infections with parvovirus B 19 can cause aplastic crises with a rapid decline of hemoglobin levels in patients with hereditary spherocytosis. Usually, the symptoms and signs of the actual infection are mild. We here report on an eight year old girl with hereditary spherocytosis who was admitted to hospital with high temperature, headache, impaired consciousness and a profound anemia (Hb 2.9 mmol/l). Since she also developed low leukocyte and platelet counts a hematological malignancy was suspected. The bone marrow aspirate showed only 1 % erythroblasts and macrophages with active hemophagocyt…

Parvovirus B19 causes erythema infectiosum in children, but the virus is associated with an increasing range of different diseases. About 20% of infections are associated with delayed virus elimination and viremia persisting over several months or years. These persistent B19-infections are characterised by the presence of IgG against the non-structural protein NS1. This study aimed to find further evidence for an association of parvovirus B19 persistence with VP1/2- and NS1-specific IgG-antibodies in children suffering from rheumatic diseases of childhood. Forty-eight children and adolescents …

A 19-year-old, immunologically healthy man suffered from prolonged and intermittent high fever, left parotitis, systemic lymph node swelling, progressive liver dysfunction and leukocytopenia. 11 days after the fever onset, consciousness disturbance and generalized convulsion occurred. By the administration of gamma-globulin and steroid, the patient recovered completely. Serum titers of IgG and IgM specific for both human parvovirus B19 and mumps were elevated, and parvovirus B19 DNA was identified in the serum. It was speculated that overlap infection of mumps and parvovirus B19 made the disea…

Anemia is generally attributed to zidovudine therapy in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients, although parvovirus B19 infection has been reported as a rare cause. We report on a 24-year-old homosexual man infected with HIV who presented with anemia. He had received aggressive daily antiretroviral therapy (zidovudine 600 mg, lamivudine 300 mg, and saquinavir 1,800 mg) for 2 years. At the time of admission, his CD4+ count was 10 x 10(6) cells/L. A bone marrow aspirate smear showed a marked decrease in erythropoiesis and immunocytochemical staining for parvovirus B19 was positive.…
