Risk factors associated with intubation and readmissions in patients with angioedema: A single-center experience al. / Ann Allergy Asthma Immunol 127 (2021) xxx-xxx"?>.

BACKGROUND: Given the heterogeneity of etiologies, pathophysiology, and presentation of angioedema, variations in clinical outcomes, such as intubation and hospital readmissions, need further clarification. OBJECTIVE: To determine the factors associated with intubation and hospital readmissions in patients with angioedema. METHODS: Retrospective study of patients evaluated with a diagnosis of angioedema in a 6-year period. Demographic and clinical data, such as medication use, family history, comorbidities, and symptoms, were recorded. Multivariable logistic regression was used to analyze fa

Social disparities in unplanned 30-day readmission rates after hospital discharge in patients with chronic health conditions: A retrospective cohort study using patient level hospital administrative data linked to the population census in Switzerland.

Unplanned readmissions shortly after discharge from hospital are common in chronic diseases. The risk of readmission has been shown to be related both to hospital care, e.g., medical complications, and to patients' resources and abilities to manage the chronic disease at home and to make appropriate use of outpatient medical care. Despite a growing body of evidence on social determinants of health and health behaviour, little is known about the impact of social and contextual factors on readmission rates. The objective of this study was to analyse possible effects of educational, financial and

Nurse-led discharge versus consulting surgeon-led discharge for patients who underwent laparoscopic surgeries: an evaluation of follow-up outcome, readmission frequencies, cost of care, and satisfaction of patients.

BACKGROUND: Consulting surgeons review admitted patients and make decisions regarding their fitness for discharge. This leads to a delay in discharge. Delayed hospital discharge is an issue faced by patients after laparoscopic surgery, which increases their morbidity. Thus, discharge for laparoscopic surgeries is a critical issue in healthcare. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the follow-up outcomes, readmission frequencies, cost of care, and satisfaction of patients who received nurse-led discharge compared to those of patients who received consulting surgeon-led discharge after laparoscopic surgerie

Association between time-domain heart rate variability, diastolic dysfunction and unplanned readmission to cardiovascular department in older type 2 diabetes mellitus patients.

BACKGROUND: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a risk factor for the development of left ventricular diastolic dysfunction (LVDD). Reduced heart rate variability (HRV) was linked to autonomic nervous system dysfunction and higher risk of cardiovascular mortality. HRV has been associated with systolic dysfunction, recent studies indicate its relevance to diastolic dysfunction. The objective of our study was to investigate the association between time-domain HRV, diastolic dysfunction and unplanned readmission (UR) in older patients with T2DM. METHODS: Older patients with T2DM were included in t

Socioeconomic Disadvantage Is Associated with Health Care Disparities in Mortality, Readmission and Long-Term Anticoagulation in Young Patients Following Submassive (Intermediate-Risk) Pulmonary Embolism.

BACKGROUND: Submassive pulmonary embolism (sPE) can result in increased morbidity and mortality but the impact of social determinants of health using the Area Deprivation Index (ADI) on outcomes has not been explored. METHODS: Patients admitted with sPE (2013-2019) at one health care network were divided into terciles by ADI. To capture a workforce cohort, patients older than 60 or with a diagnosis of cancer were excluded. Outcomes included overall and cardiovascular and pulmonary embolism (PE) specific mortality. Groups were compared using Kaplan-Meier curves, and multivariable Cox-proportio

Comparison of 30-day readmission and same-day discharge rates in patients undergoing pulsed field vs radiofrequency ablation for atrial fibrillation: A multicenter analysis.

BACKGROUND: Pulsed field ablation (PFA) for atrial fibrillation (AF) is noninferior to radiofrequency ablation (RFA) regarding efficacy. However, data on readmission rates have not yet been compared. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to compare rates of 30-day readmission, same-day discharge (SDD), and cardiac- or procedure-related readmissions among patients undergoing PFA vs RFA for AF. METHODS: We conducted a multicenter prospective analysis of patients undergoing PFA and RFA for AF in 2024 among 7 hospitals. The primary endpoint was the 30-day readmission rate. The secondary endpoints were rat

Readmissions Among Patients With Surgically Managed Drug Use Associated-Infective Endocarditis Before and After the Implementation of an Addiction Consult Team: A Retrospective, Observational Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Patients who undergo cardiac surgery for drug use-associated infective endocarditis (DUA-IE) have high rates of readmissions for recurrent endocarditis, substance use disorder (SUD), and septicemia. Our primary objective was to assess whether exposure to an addiction consult team (ACT) was associated with reduced readmissions in this population. METHODS: This single-center retrospective analysis identified patients who underwent cardiac surgery for DUA-IE between 1/2012-9/2022 using the Society for Thoracic Surgeons database, and compared the cumulative incidence of readmissions a

Questionnaire format of modified frailty index as a predictor for 30-day readmission and length of stay in elderly patients undergoing multi-level lumbar interbody fusion.

BACKGROUND: Frailty is a spectrum describing a demographic more likely to experience adverse events such as falls, disability, and hospital admission which can be quantified by the modified frailty index (mFI). Several studies have associated increased mFI score with higher rates of hospital readmission and length of stay (LOS). This study tests the predictive value of a frailty questionnaire based on the mFI on LOS and 30-day readmission rates. METHODS: This retrospective chart review included all patients aged 60 or older who underwent multi-level LIF by 13 surgeons at a single institution.

Diabetes does not increase in-hospital or short-term mortality in patients undergoing surgical repair for type A aortic dissection: insight from the national readmission database.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have reported a protective effect of type 2 diabetes on the incidence and progression of aortic aneurysms. We investigated whether this protective effect extends to aortic dissections. METHODS: Data from the US Nationwide Readmission Database (2016-2019) were analyzed. Patients admitted for open surgery repair of acute type A aortic dissection (TAAD) were initially analyzed (index group). Those discharged alive were followed for up to 30 days (readmission group). The co-primary outcomes were in-hospital and 30-day mortality. RESULTS: Between 2016 and 2019, 7,324

Early (0-7 day) and late (8-30 day) readmission predictors in acute coronary syndrome, atrial fibrillation, and congestive heart failure patients.

OBJECTIVES: Thirty-day readmission following hospitalization for acute coronary syndrome (ACS), atrial fibrillation (AF), or congestive heart failure (CHF) is common, and many occur within one week of discharge. Using a cohort of patients hospitalized for ACS, AF, or CHF, we sought to identify predictors of 30-day, early (0-7 day), and late (8-30 day) all-cause readmission. METHODS: We identified 3531 hospitalizations for ACS, AF, or CHF at a large academic medical center between 2008 and 2018. Multivariable logistic regression models were created to identify predictors of 30-day, early, and

The cardiac care bridge program: design of a randomized trial of nurse-coordinated transitional care in older hospitalized cardiac patients at high risk of readmission and mortality.

BACKGROUND: After hospitalization for cardiac disease, older patients are at high risk of readmission and death. Although geriatric conditions increase this risk, treatment of older cardiac patients is limited to the management of cardiac diseases. The aim of this study is to investigate if unplanned hospital readmission and mortality can be reduced by the Cardiac Care Bridge transitional care program (CCB program) that integrates case management, disease management and home-based cardiac rehabilitation. METHODS: In a randomized trial on patient level, 500 eligible patients ≥ 70 years and at

Effect of Optimizing Guideline-Directed Medical Therapy Before Discharge on Mortality and Heart Failure Readmission in Patients Hospitalized With Heart Failure With Reduced Ejection Fraction.

Guideline-directed medical therapy (GDMT) is recommended for patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF). However, the prognostic impact of medication optimization at the time of discharge in patients hospitalized with heart failure (HF) is unclear. We analyzed 534 patients (73 ± 13 years old) with HFrEF. The status of GDMT at the time of discharge (prescription of angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor [ACE-I]/angiotensin receptor blocker [ARB] and β blocker [BB]) and its association with 1-year all-cause mortality and HF readmission were investigated. Patients were di
