Does anesthetic method influence vaginal bulge symptoms and patient satisfaction after vaginal wall repair surgery?

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Surgery for pelvic organ prolapse (POP) under local anesthesia has been advocated for several reasons such as lower costs and application in multimorbid patients. The aim of this study was to investigate how the anesthetic method influences the rate of recurrent prolapse and patient satisfaction with POP surgery. METHODS: In this retrospective study 4,936 women operated for single-compartment prolapse between 2006 and 2011 were included from the Swedish National Register for Gynecological Surgery. The feeling of vaginal bulge 1 year after surgery indicated presenc…

Improved patient awareness and satisfaction using procedure specific consent forms in carpal tunnel decompression surgery.

Carpal tunnel decompression (CTD) is a common procedure amenable to procedure specific consent forms (PSCFs). These may help better inform patients and so increase patient satisfaction with the consent process. We assessed the use of a PSCF for CTD. The PSCF mentions eight complications of carpal tunnel surgery and alternative non-operative treatments. Two groups of 40 patients each were compared prospectively. Patients in one group were issued with a PSCF prior to admission whereas those in the other group were not. After standard pre-operative consent, patients were interviewed prior to surg…

Rechargeable deep brain stimulation implantable pulse generators in movement disorders: patient satisfaction and conversion parameters.

OBJECTIVES: Rechargeable (RC) implantable pulse generators (IPGs) for deep brain stimulation (DBS) in movement disorders have recently become available. No guidelines exist for parameter adjustment after conversion of non-RC to RC IPGs, or reports of patient satisfaction with RC IPGs when used as initial DBS device or after conversion from non-RC IPGs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients who underwent placement of Activa RC IPG (Medtronic, Inc.) were surveyed by phone about device satisfaction. Their charts were retrospectively reviewed and DBS settings were analyzed. The stimulation settings bef…

Stability of axis and patient satisfaction after toric implantable collamer lens implantation for myopic astigmatism.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the stability of axis and patient satisfaction after toric visian implantable collamer lens (TICL) implantation for moderate to high myopic astigmatism. METHODS: Total 33 eyes of 21 consecutive patients who underwent implantation of TICL for the correction of moderate to high myopic astigmatism were recorded and a minimum follow-up of six months was performed. The deviation of axis of TICL was detected from one week to six months postoperatively. The evaluation of the visual functions was done by the same clinician at six months after surgery. RESULTS: The mean refracti…

[Patient satisfaction and muscle torque after total knee replacement in dependence on body mass index].

AIM: In a monocentric study, we investigated patient satisfaction, clinical outcome and isokinetic muscle torque in dependence on the body mass index (BMI) in the mid-term outcome after total knee arthroplasty. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A group-matched study with two groups (each 40 knee arthroplasties in 40 patients) with a normal body mass index (BMI 20-25) and above 25 was conducted. The groups were matched for sex, diagnosis and age. Satisfaction, HSS score and isokinetic torque parameters with the Cybex 340 system were measured. RESULTS: There were no differences in the demographic data exc…

Visual outcomes and patient satisfaction after presbyopic lens exchange with a diffractive multifocal intraocular lens.

PURPOSE: To investigate the visual outcomes, severity of symptoms, and patient satisfaction after refractive lens exchange (RLE) with a diffractive multifocal intraocular lens (IOL). METHODS: A nonrandomized, unmasked, retrospective chart review study was performed. Patients who underwent RLE with ZMA00 (Abbott Laboratories) were identified from a hospital database. Eyes with preoperative uncorrected distance visual acuity or corrected distance visual acuity 20/20 or better were included. The study cohort comprised 45 eyes from 29 patients. Visual and non-visual factors associated with patient satisfaction and quality of life in LASIK.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to determine how laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) affects quality of life (QOL) and to identify factors that may affect satisfaction after LASIK. METHODS: A total of 104 patients with a mean age of 29±6, treated with LASIK for myopia and astigmatism, were enrolled in a prospective study. High (90%) and low (10%) contrast visual acuity (CVA) were measured under photopic and scotopic conditions before surgery and at 3 months later. Does a replacement or revision of an inflatable penile prosthesis lead to decreased patient satisfaction?

To analyze the reason for replacement, revision and overall satisfaction of a cohort who underwent surgical replacement of an inflatable penile prosthesis (IPP). A cohort of 105 patients who underwent IPP replacement from 2005-2007 was retrieved from the prosthesis database. Approximately 21.9% (23) underwent replacement or revision of their prosthesis because of complications, and were further analyzed. Reason for removal was stratified into infectious and non-infectious (erosion, non-function and patient discomfort). Age, race (African American vs non-African American), smoking history, hype

Patient-provider communication and low-income adults: age, race, literacy, and optimism predict communication satisfaction.

OBJECTIVE: To assess whether literacy, numeracy, and optimism are related to low-income adults' satisfaction with their healthcare provider's communication skills. METHODS: Low-income adults (N=131) were recruited from seven counties in Indiana through University extension programs. To achieve research triangulation, participants were surveyed and interviewed about their communication satisfaction with health providers. RESULTS: Survey data revealed that four variables significantly predicted satisfaction: age, race, literacy, and optimism. Low-income adults in the current study were more cr

The relationship between cancer-related fatigue and patient satisfaction with quality of life in cancer.

Fatigue affects a majority of patients undergoing cancer-related therapies. We conducted a study of 954 adult cancer patients presenting for treatment at our hospital between April 2001 and November 2004 to quantify the relationship between fatigue and patient satisfaction with quality of life (QoL). Fatigue was measured using the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire fatigue subscale. Patient satisfaction with QoL was measured using the Ferrans and Powers Quality of Life Index (QLI). The relationship between fatigue and QLI was evaluated usin…

Patient satisfaction with alosetron for the treatment of women with diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: The efficacy and tolerability of alosetron in women with diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) have been established in double-blind, placebo-controlled trials. However, the degree to which alosetron fulfills the needs of those suffering from IBS has not been thoroughly examined from the patient's perspective. This randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study conducted in women with diarrhea-predominant IBS evaluated patients' overall satisfaction with treatment as well as their satisfaction with respect to several specific medication attributes.
