The effects of stimulus and subject factors on a face matching task.

An initial experiment revealed that, under very rapid viewing conditions, the usual asymmetry for face recognition occurred only for low-detail facial sketches. Photographs and medium-detail sketches failed to show VF asymmetry. A further experiment revealed that the effect was unlikely to be attributable to discrimination difficulties; this experiment, however, replicated the LVF superiority on low-detail faces only for male subjects. These results are briefly examined in the light of Sergent's theoretical interpretation of hemisphere asymmetry (Sergent, J. Percept. Psychophys. 31, 451-461, 1

Pattern-reversal electroretinograms in unilateral glaucoma.

Pattern-reversal and flash electroretinograms (ERG) and oscillatory potentials (OP) were recorded from 11 patients with unilateral glaucoma. All glaucomatous eyes had reduced amplitudes both compared to the opposite eye in the same patient and to reference values. In 10 of the 11 cases this reduction was below the level of normal variation. The difference in pattern-reversal ERG amplitude means from glaucomatous and opposite eyes was statistically significant. No differences were observed in flash ERGs or OPs. The histopathologic correlate to the visual field defects in glaucoma is retinal gan

Human cortical processing of colour and pattern.

The present study investigates human visual processing of simple two-colour patterns using a delayed match to sample paradigm with positron emission tomography (PET). This study is unique in that we specifically designed the visual stimuli to be the same for both pattern and colour recognition with all patterns being abstract shapes not easily verbally coded composed of two-colour combinations. We did this to explore those brain regions required for both colour and pattern processing and to separate those areas of activation required for one or the other. We found that both tasks activated sim

The spatial area of the normalization pool in early visual processing.

IMPORTANCE: The risk of mental disorders is consistently associated with variants in CACNA1C (L-type calcium channel Cav1.2) but it is not known why these channels are critical to cognition, and whether they affect the layer III pyramidal cells in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex that are especially vulnerable in cognitive disorders. OBJECTIVE: To examine the molecular mechanisms expressed in layer III pyramidal cells in primate dorsolateral prefrontal cortices. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: The design included transcriptomic analyses from human and macaque dorsolateral prefrontal cor

Spatiotemporal Representations of Contextual Associations for Real-World Objects.

In the real world, objects always appear in context. Many objects are reliably associated with a certain scene context (e.g., pots appear in kitchens) and other objects that appear in the same context (e.g., pans appear together with pots). Previous neuroimaging work suggests that such contextual associations shape the neural representation of isolated objects even in the absence of the scene context. Yet, three key questions remain unanswered: (1) How do representations of contextual associations relate to perceptual and categorical representation in visual cortex, (2) how do they emerge acro

Interocular suppression in primary visual cortex in strabismus: impact of staggering the presentation of stimuli to the eyes.

Diplopia (double vision) in strabismus is prevented by suppression of the image emanating from one eye. In a recent study conducted in two macaques raised with exotropia (an outward ocular deviation) but having normal acuity in each eye, simultaneous display of stimuli to each eye did not induce suppression in V1 neurons. Puzzled by this negative result, we have modified our protocol to display stimuli in a staggered sequence, rather than simultaneously. Additional recordings were made in the same two macaques, following two paradigms. In trial type 1, the receptive field in one eye was stimul

Resilience to the contralateral visual field bias as a window into object representations.

Viewing images of manipulable objects elicits differential blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) contrast across parietal and dorsal occipital areas of the human brain that support object-directed reaching, grasping, and complex object manipulation. However, it is unknown which object-selective regions of parietal cortex receive their principal inputs from the ventral object-processing pathway and which receive their inputs from the dorsal object-processing pathway. Parietal areas that receive their inputs from the ventral visual pathway, rather than from the dorsal stream, will have inputs that

A Retinotopic Basis for the Division of High-Level Scene Processing between Lateral and Ventral Human Occipitotemporal Cortex.

UNLABELLED: In humans, there is a repeated category-selective organization across the lateral and ventral surfaces of the occipitotemporal cortex. This apparent redundancy is often explained as a feedforward hierarchy, with processing within lateral areas preceding the processing within ventral areas. Here, we tested the alternative hypothesis that this structure better reflects distinct high-level representations of the upper (ventral surface) and lower (lateral surface) contralateral quadrants of the visual field, consistent with anatomical projections from early visual areas to these surfac

A mirror in the mind: a case of visual allaesthesia in homonymous hemianopia.

We report the case of a 61-year-old female patient with intracranial bleeding in left parietal and parieto-temporal regions and a history of epilepsy and migraine. MR images showed lesions of the optic radiation, but primary visual cortical areas were intact. Perimetric testing revealed an incomplete right hemianopia. The patient claimed that visual percepts from her intact field were projected as "mirror images" into the hemianopic field. The illusory images were weak and sometimes difficult to detect, but focusing spatial attention on the "mirror" image increased its saliency. Drawings the p

Generators of visual evoked potentials for faces and eyes in the human brain as determined by dipole localization.

Human visual evoked potentials were recorded during presentation of photos of human and animal faces and various face features. Negative waves with approximate peak latencies of 165 msec (N170) were bilaterally recorded from the occipito-temporal regions. Mean peak latencies of the N170 were shorter for faces than eyes only. Analyses of amplitudes of evoked potentials indicated that the N170 elicited by faces reflected activity of a specific neural system which was insensitive to detailed differences among individual faces regardless of species, and consequently suggest that this system might

Temporal modulation transfer function of vision by pattern visual evoked potentials in patients with optic neuritis.

To reveal the impairment of the temporal modulation transfer function of vision in patients with optic neuritis, the pattern visual evoked potentials (P-VEPs) were recorded at reversal frequencies ranging from 4 to 24 per second, and the fast Fourier transform (FFT) of VEPs were investigated. In normal subjects, curves of the square root of the power of the FFTs of P-VEPs versus temporal frequency showed the maximum peak at 6 Hz (12 reversals/s). The specific distribution of the power spectrum could be found at each temporal frequency, and the amplitudes of higher harmonic components decreased

[Presentation of a new tachistoscopic test procedure for measuring functional hemisphere asymmetries of the optic field].

A newly developed tachistoscopic test using visual half-field-stimulation was tried on a clinical population of 178 primary school children. Words and geometric figures were presented. The results showed inconsistent effects of increased tiredness on the one hand and training effects on the other hand, while doing the test. The amount of asymmetry in the performance was not effected. The construction of the test was based on results of a previous study with similar items on a normal population of the same age. Therefore the items within a pair of simultaneously presented words or geometric fig

Optic aphasia: a process of interaction between vision and language.

A neurological syndrome, called in the literature ether optic aphasia or visual anomia, is defined in principle as the inability to name visually presented objects, together with the preservation of both the ability to identify them by sight correctly and to name them when they are presented in another sensory modality. This syndrome was first described by Freund in 1889, but since then its existence has been continually questioned. When it is accepted, the most common interpretation of it is in terms of an anatomical visuo-verbal disconnection. However, the precise level of the psychological

Occipital activation by pattern recognition in the early blind using auditory substitution for vision.

This PET study aimed at investigating the neural structures involved in pattern recognition in early blind subjects using sensory substitution equipment (SSE). Six early blind and six blindfolded sighted subjects were studied during three auditory processing tasks: a detection task with noise stimuli, a detection task with familiar sounds, and a pattern recognition task using the SSE. The results showed a differential activation pattern with the SSE as a function of the visual experience: in addition to the regions involved in the recognition process in sighted control subjects, occipital area

Activation of lateral extrastriate areas during orthographic processing of Japanese characters studied with fMRI.

We investigated the early orthographic processing in the occipital cortex using Japanese morphogram by functional magnetic resonance imaging. Kanji (Japanese morphogram) is one system of character used in the Japanese language, each character of which has a specific meaning and pronunciations. To ensure that the effects of the general visual properties of Kanji were excluded from Kanji-related activation, we created strict control stimuli, the "scrambled Kanji" that had the same luminance, contrast, and retinotopical size as those of the original Kanji. In the Kanji vs scrambled Kanji task, we

Spatially Dissociated Intracerebral Maps for Face- and House-Selective Activity in the Human Ventral Occipito-Temporal Cortex.

We report a comprehensive mapping of the human ventral occipito-temporal cortex (VOTC) for selective responses to frequency-tagged faces or landmarks (houses) presented in rapid periodic trains of objects, with intracerebral recordings in a large sample (N = 75). Face-selective contacts are three times more numerous than house-selective contacts and show a larger amplitude, with a right hemisphere advantage for faces. Most importantly, these category-selective contacts are spatially dissociated along the lateral-to-medial VOTC axis, respectively, consistent with neuroimaging evidence. At the m

The validity and reliability of quantifying hemispheric specialisation using fMRI: Evidence from left and right handers on three different cerebral asymmetries.

Neuroimaging has tremendous potential for quantifying hemispheric specializations. However, the possibilities remain under-utilized, in part, given some of the complexities in quantifying any differences in a reliable, transparent fashion. A second issue with hemispheric asymmetries is that they are extremely one-sided in most people. This skew limits the generalisability of any findings to those participants with rarer forms of cerebral asymmetry. Here, we demonstrate usefulness of an approach developed by Wilke and Lidzba, (J Neurosci Meth, 163, 2007), which allows for threshold-independent

Altered modulation of beta band oscillations during memory encoding is predictive of lower subsequent recognition performance in post-traumatic stress disorder.

We studied the relationship between electrophysiological markers of memory encoding, subsequent recognition performance, and severity of PTSD symptoms in service members with combat exposure (n = 40, age: 41.2 ± 7.2 years) and various levels of PTSD symptom severity assessed using the PTSD Check List for DSM V version (PCL-5). Brain activity was recorded using magnetoencephalography during a serial presentation of 86 images of outdoor scenes that were studied by participants for an upcoming recognition test. In a second session, the original images were shown intermixed with an equal number of

Subsequent memory effects in schizophrenia.

Differential neural activation at encoding can predict which stimuli will be subsequently remembered or forgotten, and memory deficits are pronounced in schizophrenia. We used event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to investigate subsequent memory (SM) effects for visual fractals in patients with schizophrenia (n=26) and healthy controls (n=28). Participants incidentally encoded the fractals during an oddball task and 10 min later they made old/new recognition memory judgments on 30 target fractals and 30 foil fractals. We found evidence for subsequent memory (SM, subsequen

Can individuals with Williams syndrome interpret mental states from moving faces?

The Williams syndrome (WS) social phenotype is characterised by a high level of social engagement, heightened empathy and prolonged attention to people's faces. These behaviours appear in contradiction to research reporting problems recognising and interpreting basic emotions and more complex mental states from other people. The current task involved dynamic (moving) face stimuli of an actor depicting complex mental states (e.g., worried, disinterested). Cues from the eye and mouth regions were systematically frozen and kept neutrally expressive to help identify the source of mental state info
