Effect of an Unstable Load on Primary and Stabilizing Muscles During the Bench Press.

Ostrowski, SJ, Carlson, LA, and Lawrence, MA. Effect of an unstable load on primary and stabilizing muscles during the bench press. J Strength Cond Res 31(2): 430-434, 2017-Unstable resistance exercises are performed to increase activity of stabilizing muscles. The premise is that this increase in activity will yield greater strength gains than traditional resistance exercises. The purpose of this study was to determine if an unstable load increases muscle activity of stabilizing muscles during a bench press as compared with a standard bench press with a typical load. Fifteen resistance-traine

Ten-year experience with the muscle split technique, bioabsorbable plates, and postoperative bracing for correction of pectus carinatum: the Innsbruck protocol.

OBJECTIVE: We reviewed further clinical experience with our approach for pectus carinatum repair: modified surgical approach of pectoralis muscle split technique, bioabsorbable plates with screws, and postoperative compressive brace. METHODS: From April 2000 to February 2010, 55 patients underwent pectus carinatum repair at our department with modifications of conventional Ravitch repair. There were 14 female and 41 male patients, mean age of 19.3 years at the onset of treatment. Postoperative treatment involved fitting of a lightweight, patient-controlled chest brace. RESULTS: Average follo

Arterial abnormalities of the shoulder in athletes.

Vascular lesions of the shoulder may be misinterpreted as one of the more familiar shoulder abnormalities by a treating physician. We are reporting on 13 athletes who were found to have symptoms related to compression of the subclavian or axillary artery or their tributaries. Nine were amateur or professional baseball pitchers. Severe arm fatigue or finger ischemia, secondary to embolization, were presenting symptoms. Arm fatigue was noted in all pitchers. After complete history and physical examination, including auscultation for bruits in functional positions, all athletes were evaluated by

Computed tomography reveals hypertrophic remodelling of the diaphragm in cystic fibrosis but not in COPD.

BACKGROUND: Computed tomography (CT) is increasingly used for assessing skeletal muscle characteristics. In cystic fibrosis (CF) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), reduced limb muscle mass predicts poor clinical outcomes. However, the degree to which quantity or quality of respiratory and nonrespiratory muscles is affected by these diseases remains controversial. METHODS: Thoracic CT images of 29 CF, 21 COPD and 20 normal spirometry control subjects were analysed to measure indices of muscle quantity (volume or cross-sectional area) and quality (radiodensity) in respiratory (di

[Neurovascular compression syndrome of the upper thoracic outlet].

UNLABELLED: Neurovascular compression syndrome of the upper thoracic outlet is a collective term encompassing various entities: cervical ribs, structural variations of the first rib, costoclavicular syndrome, fibromuscular anomalies of anterior and middle scalene muscles, pectoralis minor syndrome and various pathologies of subclavian vessels. Their combination is based on the common substrate subject to compression (neurovascular bundle passing through narrow cervicoaxillary canal). OBJECTIVE: To analyze research of etiology, pathogenesis and treatment of neurovascular compression syndrome o

Application of EMG feedback for hand prosthesis control in high-level amputation: a case study.

EMG feedback improves force control of a myoelectric hand prosthesis by conveying the magnitude of the myoelectric signal back to the users via tactile stimulation. The present study aimed to test if this method can be used by a participant with a high-level amputation, and whose muscle used for prosthesis control (pectoralis major) was not intuitively related to hand function. Vibrotactile feedback was delivered to the participant's torso, while the control was tested using EMG from three different muscles. The participant completed four experimental sessions of a force-matching task with a p

Histopathology of incidental non-neoplastic findings in transgenic CByB6F1-Tg(HRAS)2Jic mice used in toxicity studies.

This technical report presents a collection of illustrative images and concise descriptions of non-neoplastic microscopic findings noted in transgenic CByB6F1-Tg(HRAS)2Jic (Tg.rasH2) mice from 26-week-carcinogenicity studies. A unique finding in the Tg.rasH2 strain was the skeletal muscle myopathy observed in nearly all animals, particularly affecting the femoralis and pectoralis muscles, diaphragm, and subcutaneous muscles. Pigment was noted in various organs, particularly in the spleen due to the C57BL/6J background. Mononuclear and/or mixed cell inflammatory infiltrates occurred in various …

Neurotized free VRAM used to create myoelectric signals in a muscle-depleted area for targeted muscle reinnervation for intuitive prosthesis control: A case report.

Targeted muscle reinnervation enables native muscles to send electromyographic signals to myoelectric receptors, which drive movements in a prosthesis. This system requires voluntary contracture of muscles for sequential control of powered prosthetic joints. This report describes a surgical solution for cases where the chest wall is depleted of muscle targets. A 13-year-old boy with left forequarter amputation and pectoralis major resection as a result of extended necrotizing facilities 8 years prior received a neurotized free Vertical Rectus Abdominus Mycocutaneous (VRAM) flap (28 × 10 cm) de

Shoulder tendon transfer options for adult patients with brachial plexus injury.

Enhancement of upper-extremity function, specifically shoulder function, after brachial plexus injury requires a good understanding of nerve repair and transfer, with their expected outcome, as well as shoulder anatomy and biomechanics enabling the treating surgeon to use available functioning muscles around the shoulder for transfer, to improve shoulder function. Surgical treatment should address painful shoulder subluxation in addition to improvement of function. The literature focuses on improving shoulder abduction, but improving shoulder external rotation should take priority because this

The effect of light intensity on growth and development of turkey toms.

1. The effect of light intensities from 10 to 700 lux on the performance of 5 to 18 week-old turkey males was studied in 2 trials. 2. Body weight of 18 week-old turkeys, in both experiments, was highest under the lowest light intensity This coincided with higher weight gain and lower food intake, which resulted in significantly better food conversion efficiency 3. Light intensity affected heart muscle weight but not weight of breast muscle, abdominal fat or testis as proportions of body weight. 4. The decline in plasma T3 concentration with age differed from other treatments at the low light i

Microneurovascular transfer of contralateral latissimus dorsi in Poland's syndrome.

A 2-year-old girl with Poland's syndrome presented with syndactyly of the first, second and third webs of the left hand and ipsilateral absence of the sternocostal portion of pectoralis major. Latissimus dorsi on the same side was also absent. A microvascular free contralateral latissimus dorsi muscle transfer was undertaken to reconstruct the chest wall and anterior axillary fold. The transfer was innervated by intercostal nerve transfer and produced a neuromuscular unit of good aesthetic appearance and function.

Poland's syndrome associated with growth hormone deficiency.

A 9 year old boy with Poland's syndrome (absence of the left pectoralis major muscle associated with an ipsilateral malformation of the hand) and isolated growth hormone deficiency, owing to anatomical abnormalities of the pituitary gland, is described. MRI brain scan showed severe hypoplasia of both the sella and anterior lobe of the pituitary gland with absence of the pituitary stalk and ectopia of the posterior lobe. Association of Poland's syndrome and growth hormone deficiency has not been described previously.

The clavicular head of pectoralis major musculocutaneous free flap.

A new free flap is described based on the deltoid vessels of the acromiothoracic axis. The flap is comprised of the clavicular head of pectoralis major muscle with overlying skin. It is also possible to harvest vascularised clavicular bone with the flap. The vascular anatomy is reviewed and the technique of raising the flap described. Its clinical application is illustrated with five cases. Four of these were intra-oral reconstructions and the fifth a composite osteo-musculocutaneous flap to a lower limb following trauma.

Pectoral nerves I block is associated with a significant motor blockade with no dermatomal sensory changes: a prospective volunteer randomized-controlled double-blind study.

PURPOSE: The pectoral nerves (PECS) I block, first described in 2011 for surgery involving the pectoralis muscle, has principally been used for breast cancer surgery. No formal evaluation of its differential motor- and sensory-blocking abilities has been reported. We hypothesize that the PECS I block will produce a motor block of the pectoralis muscles with diminished upper limb adduction strength as measured with a handheld dynamometer. METHODS: We conducted a PECS I block in a randomized placebo-controlled trial in six healthy subjects who received 0.4 mL·kg-1 of 0.9% saline (placebo) on on…

Ideal Injection Points for Botulinum Neurotoxin for Pectoralis Minor Syndrome: A Cadaveric Study.

Pectoralis Minor Syndrome (PMS) causes significant discomfort due to the compression of the neurovascular bundle within the retropectoralis minor space. Botulinum neurotoxin (BoNT) injections have emerged as a potential treatment method; however, their effectiveness depends on accurately locating the injection site. In this study, we aimed to identify optimal BoNT injection sites for PMS treatment. We used twenty-nine embalmed and eight non-embalmed human cadavers to determine the origin and intramuscular arborization of the pectoralis minor muscle (Pm) via manual dissection and Sihler's nerve

Bilateral musculocutaneous neuropathy: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Isolated musculocutaneous nerve injury is a rare condition. Herein, we report the first case of bilateral musculocutaneous neuropathy after vigorous stretching of both upper extremities with normal results of sensory nerve action potential. Clinicians should be aware of this rare condition that can appear bilaterally. In addition, the interpretation of the aberrant electrodiagnostic study results of this case was discussed. CASE SUMMARY: A 29-year-old male complaining of bilateral forearm tingling and upper extremity weakness visited the outpatient clinic. The symptoms began 6 mo

[Surgical treatment of pulmonary aspergilloma].

Invasive pulmonary aspergillosis is a life-threatening disease, developing from infection mostly by Aspergillus fumigatus. It is an opportunistic infection and occurs mostly in immunosuppressed patients, after tuberculosis, in patients with AIDS or malignomas. The most common symptom and complication is hemoptysis up to massive bleeding. Surgical treatment is obligatory on patients with a pulmonary aspergilloma. Time and form of intervention should be discussed between surgeon and pulmonologist. Resection should follow anatomical borders like lobectomy or pneumectomy. Any remaining intrathorac

Flap Reconstruction for Deep Sternal Wound Infections: Factors Influencing Morbidity and Mortality.

BACKGROUND: Deep sternal wound infections (DSWI) often require flap reconstruction to obliterate dead space and provide healthy soft tissue coverage. A better understanding of risk factors for complications after DSWI flap reconstruction may improve operative management. METHODS: A retrospective study (2007-2018) was conducted of all patients with DSWI after cardiothoracic procedure referred to a single reconstructive surgeon for flap reconstruction. Patient and operative factors were reviewed, including procedure types and outcomes. Predictors of morbidity and mortality rates were analyzed.

Comparing myofascial meridian activation during single leg vertical drop jump in patients with anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction and healthy participants.

BACKGROUND: Muscles work synergistically to support the body during landing. Myofascial meridians have been described to classify muscles into functional synergies. The role that these functional lines plays in positioning the trunk and lower extremity of patients with anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) and healthy athletes during drop landing tasks remains unclear. RESEARCH QUESTION: The purpose of this study was to compare the front and back functional lines (FFL and BFL) muscle activation in patients with ACLR and healthy participants during single leg vertical drop jump (SLV
