Binaural interaction measured behaviorally and electrophysiologically in young and old adults.

12 young men (mean age = 39.1 years) and 12 older men (mean age = 69.4 years) presenting some degree of sensorineural hearing loss were chosen so that the two groups were audiometrically matched. Behavioral tests of binaural interaction (BI) included binaural fusion, rapidly alternating speech perception, and masking level difference (at 500 Hz). There was a tendency toward better performance by the younger subjects for each of these tests, but these comparisons fell short of statistical significance. Auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) and middle-latency responses (MLRs) to clicks were record

Double-opponent-process mechanism underlying RF-structure of directionally specific cells of cat lateral suprasylvian visual area.

For the experiments reported in this study, recordings were obtained from 246 single units in the middle lateral suprasylvian visual area (LS) of 13 cats. 49 of these cells were subjected to detailed quantitative analysis. The receptive field (RF) organization was examined for directionally specific cells by presenting moving single spots on large moving random dot backgrounds. A cell's response to an optimal spot (in terms of size, direction, velocity) moving on a stationary background inside the excitatory RF (ERF) was compared to in-phase (same direction, same velocity) and anti-phase (oppo

Temporal Dynamics of Visual Awareness as a Function of the Level of Processing of the Stimulus and Report Requirements: An ERP Study.

Recent evidence suggests that the stimulus level of processing (LoP) modulates the two event-related potential (ERP) correlates of visual awareness-the visual awareness negativity (VAN) and late positivity (LP)-yet it remains unclear whether LoP also affects their temporal dynamics. In addition, recent studies using no-report paradigms have raised doubts about whether the LP constitutes a genuine correlate of awareness. In this study, we examined the ERP correlates of visual awareness and its temporal dynamics as a function of stimulus level of processing (LoP) and report condition (report vs.

Auditory Brainstem Response Latency in Noise as a Marker of Cochlear Synaptopathy.

UNLABELLED: Evidence from animal and human studies suggests that moderate acoustic exposure, causing only transient threshold elevation, can nonetheless cause "hidden hearing loss" that interferes with coding of suprathreshold sound. Such noise exposure destroys synaptic connections between cochlear hair cells and auditory nerve fibers; however, there is no clinical test of this synaptopathy in humans. In animals, synaptopathy reduces the amplitude of auditory brainstem response (ABR) wave-I. Unfortunately, ABR wave-I is difficult to measure in humans, limiting its clinical use. Here, using an

Temporal processing in the auditory system: insights from cochlear and auditory midbrain implantees.

Central auditory processing in humans was investigated by comparing the perceptual effects of temporal parameters of electrical stimulation in auditory midbrain implant (AMI) and cochlear implant (CI) users. Four experiments were conducted to measure the following: effect of interpulse intervals on detection thresholds and loudness; temporal modulation transfer functions (TMTFs); effect of duration on detection thresholds; and forward masking decay. The CI data were consistent with a phenomenological model that based detection or loudness decisions on the output of a sliding temporal integrati

Vigilance for threat interacts with amygdala responses to subliminal threat cues in specific phobia.

BACKGROUND: The amygdala has been strongly implicated in the processing of threat-relevant information in specific phobia. However, there is an ongoing debate as to whether the amygdala may also be engaged outside of conscious stimulus awareness. Furthermore, considering that sustained vigilance for threat constitutes a crucial characteristic of specific phobias, we hypothesized a possible role of this symptom in modulating amygdala sensitivity to disorder-relevant cues. Using event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging, we examined responses of the amygdala to subliminal and supralimi

Infant cortical tracking of speech shows emerging spatial release from masking in the first year of life.

Natural listening environments are filled with competing sounds. One mechanism that helps overcome this challenge is spatial release from masking (SRM), whereby spatial separation between a target signal and interfering sounds improves perception of the target. SRM has been observed in a wide range of species including songbirds, crocodilians, ferrets, and human adults, suggesting an evolutionarily conserved strategy for listening in noise. However, an important question remains: Is an infant's developing brain able to tap into the same mechanism to cope with the noisy world? To address this q

Visual system assessment for predicting a transition to psychosis.

The field of psychiatry is far from perfect in predicting which individuals will transition to a psychotic disorder. Here, we argue that visual system assessment can help in this regard. Such assessments have generated medium-to-large group differences with individuals prior to or near the first psychotic episode or have shown little influence of illness duration in larger samples of more chronic patients. For example, self-reported visual perceptual distortions-so-called visual basic symptoms-occur in up to 2/3rds of those with non-affective psychosis and have already longitudinally predicted

The medial agranular cortex mediates attentional enhancement of prepulse inhibition of the startle reflex.

The startle reflex, which interferes with on-going cognitive/behavioral activities, is of important protective function for humans and animals. Prepulse inhibition (PPI), as an operational measure of sensorimotor gating, is the suppression of the startle reflex in response to an intense startling stimulus (pulse) when this startling stimulus is shortly preceded by a weaker non-startling stimulus (prepulse). In both humans and laboratory animals, PPI can be enhanced by facilitating selective attention to the prepulse, suggesting that higher-order cognitive/perceptual processes modulate PPI. It

Preparatory activity in occipital cortex in early blind humans predicts auditory perceptual performance.

Early onset blindness leads to a dramatic alteration in the way the world is perceived, a change that is detectable in the organization of the brain. Several studies have confirmed that blindness leads to functional alterations in occipital cortices that normally serve visual functions. These reorganized brain regions respond to a variety of tasks and stimuli, but their specific functions are unclear. In sighted individuals, several studies have reported preparatory activity in retinotopic areas, which enhances perceptual sensitivity. "Baseline shifts," changes in activity associated with a cu

Effects of nonconscious perception on motor response.

The present study reviews the literature on the empirical evidence for the dissociation between perception and action. We first review several key studies on brain-damaged patients, such as those suffering from blindsight and visual/tactile agnosia, and on experimental findings examining pointing movements in normal people in response to a nonconsciously perceived stimulus. We then describe three experiments we conducted using simple reaction time (RT) tasks with backward masking, in which the first (weak) and second (strong) electric stimuli were consecutively presented with a 40-ms interstim

Hyperacusis scores and listening characteristics: Extended high-frequency audiograms from a young population without tinnitus and with low noise exposure.

Hyperacusis describes the condition in which mid-level sounds are perceived as uncomfortably loud. This study assessed 36 listeners (mean age = 25.75 years) with low noise-exposure history (Noise Exposure Structured Interview, NESI) and no tinnitus, to investigate the association between assessed hyperacusis scores (Hyperacusis Questionnaire, HQ), measured uncomfortable loudness levels (ULLs), and speech intelligibility in noise (Matrix Speech test). Thresholds were ≤ 20 dB HL, for the standard audiometric signal frequencies (0.25-8 kHz). ULLs were measured for signal frequencies of 0.5-, 2-,

Sound enrichment therapy is more effective for long-term tinnitus suppression with 10 Hz amplitude modulation.

Tinnitus is a complex clinical condition that lacks a well-established treatment because its underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. This study investigated the long-term efficacy of a personalized 10 Hz amplitude-modulated (AM) sound enrichment protocol in comparison with an unmodulated (UM) protocol. Seventy-one participants with chronic tonal tinnitus were assigned to either a modulated group (MG, n = 27), which underwent a 10 Hz AM sound complex, or an unmodulated group (UMG, n = 44), which underwent an unmodulated sound complex. Stimuli were individually customized by spectrally s

Masked speech recognition by 6-13-year-olds with early-childhood otitis media: effects of acoustic condition and otologic history.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate speech recognition in school-age children with early-childhood otitis media (OM) in conditions with noise or speech maskers with or without interaural differences. To also investigate the effects of three otologic history factors. DESIGN: Using headphone presentation, speech recognition thresholds (SRTs) were measured with simple sentences. As maskers, stationary speech-shaped noise (SSN) or two-talker running speech (TTS) were used. The stimuli were presented in a monaural and binaural condition (SSN) or a co-located and spatially separated condition (TTS). Based on

Effects of Tinnitus Retraining Therapy with Different Colours of Sound.

BACKGROUND: In Tinnitus Retraining Therapy (TRT) sound stimulation is conventionally performed with low-level broadband sound generators; since the patient has to receive it for many hours in a day, it is important that the sound is tolerable and agreeable to the patient. A clinical trial was undertaken to evaluate the effect of different colour sound generators on tinnitus. The colour of a sound refers to the power spectrum of the signal. The sound generators used in this study provide the option to choose the preferred or most acceptable sound among white, red and pink noise. METHODS AND FI

Acoustic stapedius reflex function in man revisited.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to examine the role of the acoustic stapedius reflex in the protection of speech recognition from the upward spread of masking arising from low-frequency background noise. DESIGN: Speech recognition scores were measured for nine control participants (19-34 years) and six patients with transected stapedius tendons poststapedotomy (39-57 years) as a function of the amplitude of a low-frequency masker, presented at nominal signal to noise ratios of +5 dB, -5 dB, and -15 dB. All participants had pure-tone hearing thresholds in the normal range. Continuou

Pitch matching psychometrics in electric acoustic stimulation.

OBJECTIVE: Combined electric-acoustic stimulation (EAS) is a therapeutic option for patients with severe to profound mid- and high-frequency hearing loss while low-frequency hearing is mostly unaffected. The present study investigates bimodal pitch matching in EAS users as a function of the angular placement of electrodes. Results are compared with data obtained from previous pitch matching studies. Knowledge of electric and acoustic pitch mapping may be important for effective fitting to control the frequency range of acoustic and electric processing. DESIGN: Pitch adjustment experiments wer

Forward-masking patterns produced by symmetric and asymmetric pulse shapes in electric hearing.

Two forward-masking experiments were conducted with six cochlear implant listeners to test whether asymmetric pulse shapes would improve the place-specificity of stimulation compared to symmetric ones. The maskers were either cathodic-first symmetric biphasic, pseudomonophasic (i.e., with a second anodic phase longer and lower in amplitude than the first phase), or "delayed pseudomonophasic" (identical to pseudomonophasic but with an inter-phase gap) stimuli. In experiment 1, forward-masking patterns for monopolar maskers were obtained by keeping each masker fixed on a middle electrode of the
