Cuproptosis in Endodontics: Potential Mechanisms and Therapeutic Applications.

INTRODUCTION: Cuproptosis is a recently identified copper-dependent form of regulated cell death that is distinct from apoptosis, pyroptosis, and ferroptosis. Its relevance to endodontic disease remains poorly understood despite increasing evidence that copper dyshomeostasis influences oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, and inflammatory tissue destruction. METHODS: A structured PubMed search was conducted up to April 27, 2026, using terms related to cuproptosis, copper, endodontics, pulpitis, and apical periodontitis. Original studies, reviews, and mechanistic reports relevant to th

Invasive Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma Mimicking a Dentoalveolar Abscess: Report of a Case in a 14-Year-Old Patient.

INTRODUCTION: A diagnosis of oral squamous cell carcinoma in adolescent patients is extremely rare. When an oral squamous cell carcinoma lesion arises near the teeth and/or periodontium, it can be easily misdiagnosed as an inflammatory condition of endodontic or periodontal origin. METHODS: This is a case report of an otherwise healthy 14-year-old patient who was referred for endodontic evaluation and treatment of a soft-tissue swelling in the anterior maxilla. RESULTS: The unexpected definitive diagnosis of invasive oral squamous cell carcinoma underscores the importance of proper diagnosti

Cemental tear related to rapid periodontal breakdown: a case report.

Cemental tears have been described both in exposed and unexposed cementum. The phenomenon is believed to be elicited by overloading or acute trauma from occlusion. In this case report a patient, with a history of periodontal health, presented with an acute periodontal lesion on the distal aspect of a bridge abutment tooth. Periapical radiographs demonstrated an extensive vertical intrabony defect adjacent to the vital abutment tooth containing a radiopaque "foreign body." Histological examination of the surgically removed "foreign body" revealed a piece of dental cementum with some attached so

The role of cathepsin K in oral and maxillofacial disorders.

Cathepsin K (CTSK) was thought to be a collagenase, specifically expressed by osteoclasts, and played an important role in bone resorption. However, more and more research found that CTSK was expressed in more extensive cells, tissues, and organs. It may not only participate in regulating human physiological activity, but also be closely related to a variety of disease. In this review, we highlight the relationship between CTSK and oral and maxillofacial disorders on the following three aspects: oral and maxillofacial abnormities in patients with pycnodysostosis caused by CTSK mutations, oral

Non-plaque related periodontal lesions. An overview of some common and uncommon lesions.

An overview is presented of some common and uncommon non-plaque-related lesions and conditions of the periodontal tissues. Erosive lesions of the gingiva, such as lichen planus, may clinically be misdiagnosed as being the result of inflammation. Likewise, local and generalized gingival swelling may be based on non-plaque-related lesions and conditions. True leukoplakia of the gingiva is rare, but should be looked upon with suspicion. The reasons for pigmentation of the gingiva are many-fold. Especially in the maxilla, the clinician should be alert for an early malignant melanoma. A large varie

A Review of Selected Dental Anomalies With Histologic Features in the Pediatric Patient.

Unique dental conditions in children include odontogenic cysts and tumors, hereditary dental diseases, developmental anomalies, and lesions associated with the eruption of the primary or permanent teeth. Many of these conditions have long lasting effects on the adult dentition in terms of affecting esthetics, function, and overall quality of life. Inherited dental syndromes affect the dental hard tissues specifically the enamel, dentin, and/or cementum in a generalized manner, involving both primary and permanent teeth. These conditions manifest in altered quality or quantity of the hard tissu

Periodontal status in two siblings with severe congenital neutropenia: diagnosis and mutational analysis of the cases.

BACKGROUND: Severe congenital neutropenia (SCN), also known as Kostmann syndrome, was originally reported as an autosomal recessive disease of neutrophil production. The disease is characterized by a maturation arrest of neutrophil precursors at the promyelocytic stage of differentiation and by extremely low levels of mature neutrophils in peripheral blood. METHODS: A 6-year-old male presented with a complaint of gingival swelling and bleeding, and swelling at the left side of his face. Upon clinical examination, severe inflammation of all gingival tissues was apparent, and a periapical absce

Comparative evaluation among different materials to replace soft tissue in oral radiology studies.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to establish which materials afford better simulation of soft tissues in Oral Radiology studies. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The sample was composed of four materials in eleven different thicknesses to simulate the soft tissues of the face. The mean values of the relative amounts of radiographic contrast of the materials were determined and compared to a gold standard value, which was obtained from 20 patients who were referred to have periapical radiographs taken of the left mandibular molars. Data were subjected to statistical analysis with Dunnett's test (p<0

Histologic analysis of pulpal revascularization of autotransplanted immature teeth after removal of the original pulp tissue.

The survival rate of replanted and autotransplanted teeth is mainly affected by the reaction of the pulp. Pulpal necrosis can cause periapical inflammation and inflammatory root resorption. The purpose of this study is to learn more about the pulpal changes in autotransplanted immature teeth whose pulp tissue was removed before transplantation. The experimental material consisted of 16 single-rooted teeth with open apices, from a beagle dog (3 months of age). At day 0, 4 teeth were extracted, the pulpal tissues were removed, and the teeth were then transplanted to their contralateral side. The

Periapical changes following root-canal treatment observed 20-27 years postoperatively.

AIM: The aim of the present study was to identify periapical changes 20-27 years after root-canal treatment. METHODOLOGY: The periapical condition of 265 roots filled by undergraduate students was evaluated in two series of intraoral radiographs taken 10-17 and 20-27 years after treatment. Roots (72) not recorded with a normal periapical situation on both occasions by two observers, were re-evaluated by other two examiners, separately and jointly. Final decisions about diagnoses were made by all four examiners. A strict definition was used for the identification of cases with an unfavourable

Subepithelial connective tissue graft associated with apicoectomy and root-end fillings in the treatment of deep localized gingival recession with apex root exposure: case report.

Periodontal reconstructive surgery procedures seek to correct mucogingival defects, including gingival recession. This case report describes the use of a subepithelial connective tissue graft (SCTG) associated with root-end fillings using mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) for the treatment of Miller Class II recession with root apex exposure. A partial-thickness double pedicle flap was made, followed by root preparation with curette and bur finishing. The exposed root apex was removed and the canal was filled with MTA. An SCTG taken from the palate was placed over the root surface and covered w

Intentional vital root transection: a 52-week histopathologic study in Macaca mulatta.

Past studies dealing with the vascular supply to surgically mobilized dentoalveolar segments have mentioned occasional encounters with vital root transection and have noted varying degrees of pulpal response to this insult. The purpose of this investigation was to observe the pulpal and periapical responses of monkey dental tissues to intentional vital root transection over a 1-year postoperative period. Four adult Macaca mulatta monkeys were used in this study. All roots were surgically transected within the apical third with a bur. Maxillary and mandibular quadrants for 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 12, 24

Circumferentially Exposed Achilles Tendon Wound Reconstruction Using Free Anterolateral Thigh Flap With Vascularized Fascia Lata Wrapping.

Resection of a giant plexiform fibroma on the lower leg of a 75-year-old woman with neurofibromatosis type 1 resulted in an extensive skin soft tissue defect and a circumferentially exposed wound involving the Achilles tendon. As secondary reconstruction was performed after a waiting period to rule out a malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor using histopathological examination, the major challenge was to prevent adhesion of the Achilles tendon to the surrounding granulation tissue, in addition to reconstructing the extensive skin soft tissue defect. We overcame this problem by using a free a
