The Influence of Personality Disorder Symptoms on Treatment Outcomes in Bipolar Disorder: A Secondary Analysis of a Randomised Controlled Trial: L'influence des symptômes du trouble de la personnalité sur les résultats du traitement dans le trouble bipolaire : Une analyse secondaire d'un essai randomisé contrôlé.

OBJECTIVES: Many people who are diagnosed with bipolar disorder also have comorbid personality disorder. Few studies have explored how personality disorder may influence pharmacological treatment outcomes. The aim of this study was to conduct a secondary analysis of data from a clinical trial of adjunctive nutraceutical treatments for bipolar depression, to determine whether maladaptive personality traits influence treatment outcomes. METHODS: Scores on the Standardised Assessment of Personality - Abbreviated Scale screener were used to classify participants as having bipolar disorder with (n

Body-Related Attitudes, Personality, and Identity in Female Adolescents with Anorexia Nervosa or Other Mental Disorders.

The psychological integration of body-related attitudes (BodyRA) is a critical developmental task in adolescence. Adolescents must adapt to their changing body image and body satisfaction. For young people, BodyRA (body dissatisfaction, bulimia, and drive for thinness) are connected to insecurities, which can disturb identity integration and personality development. Our goal was to evaluate the importance of BodyRA also for other mental disorders other than anorexia nervosa (AN), and the association between BodyRA with temperament and personality traits and identity diffusion. Data for the per…

[From "psychopathy" to "personality disorder"--conceptual history of a problematic field within psychiatry].

The issue of personality disorders addresses fundamental questions of psychiatry: Is there a clear boundary between normal behaviour and the state of mental illness? Which criteria are defining this boundary? Is a personality disorder really a mental illness or «just» a special variation of an individual lifestyle? This paper reviews the development of the terms psychopathy/personality disorder from the early 19th century to the present-day diagnostic manuals ICD-10 and DSM-5. This debate spreads out–as it does with regard to any other mental disorder–between psychopathological, neurobiologica

Multiple personality: a psychiatric misadventure.

Though multiple personality disorder has been diagnosed with increasing frequency over the past decade, its validity has been called into question. A brief review of the literature indicates a likelihood of socio-cultural influences and iatrogenicity in many if not most cases. Symptoms of multiple personality disorder parallel other psychiatric syndromes but are usually given diagnostic priority. The author has described five cases diagnosed multiple personality disorder by another health professional in which iatrogenic influences are clearly evident. All renounced both the diagnosis and the

A generative model of personality disorder as a relational disorder.

Existing models of personality disorder are statistical models: dispersion patterns of personality facets. Although useful in describing personality differences, such models fall short in terms of explaining those differences. Generative models can address these explanatory gaps by explicating the mechanisms that generate descriptive pathologies. In this article, we aim to move beyond the former descriptive models and toward the latter explanatory ones. To do so, we formalize personality pathology using a generative model with four key properties. First, it is probabilistic: it outlines how hu

Decoding personality functioning: the impact of DSM-5 pathological traits mediated by emotion dysregulation and metacognition.

BACKGROUND: Personality disorders (PDs) have long been studied in adulthood, with relatively limited attention to their developmental course … g on developmental theories that emphasize the role of self-regulatory and reflective capacities in personality development, we examined whether emotion dysregulation and metacognitive difficulties help explain the relationship between pathological traits and functioning. METHODS: A sample of 470 Iranian adolescents aged 14-17 years completed validated measures of perso …

Perrotta Integrative Clinical Interviews-3 (PICI-3): Development, regulation, updation, and validation of the psychometric instrument for the identification of functional and dysfunctional personality traits and diagnosis of psychopathological disorders, for children (8-10 years), preadolescents (11-13 years), adolescents (14-18 years), adults (19-69 years), and elders (70-90 years).

The Perrotta Integrative Clinical Interview, second version (PICI-2) requires structural and functional updates, based on clinical and academic experience, especially in terms of functional traits and interpretation of psychopathological disorders. The Perrotta Integrative Clinical Interviews-3 (PICI-3) was created and structured into four sections, dedicated to dysfunctional traits in children and pre-adolescents (PICI-C-3, 8-13 years) and in adolescents, adults, and the elderly (PICI-TA-3, 14-90 years), to common secondary disorders (PICI-DS-3, 8-90 years) and functional traits (PICI-FT-3, 8

Personality differences between patients with lichen simplex chronicus and normal population: A study of pruritus.

Itching is common to many skin disorders. The relationship between skin disease and psychological variables has been widely documented in the literature. The association between the exacerbation of skin lesions and increased levels of psychopathological conditions in response to stressful events has also been described. Lichen Simplex Chronicus (LSC) is a skin disorder characterized by itching, which seems to have a marked psychological component. However, examples of empirical evidence linking this skin disorder to personality variables, as measured by standardized personality questionnaires,

Personality traits and personality problems in Korsakoff syndrome patients.

Personality research is of relevance because it provides insights into the psychological strengths and vulnerabilities of a person. Korsakoff's syndrome (KS) is a severe neuropsychiatric disorder following acute thiamine deficiency, usually as a consequence of alcohol-use disorders. Research on personality traits of KS patients is currently limited. The aim of the current exploratory study was therefore to examine the personality traits and problems of KS patients. We assessed self-reported and informant-reported personality traits and problems in institutionalized KS patients (n = 30). Result

Sociocultural context and the DSM-5 alternative model of personality disorder: Comment on Widiger and Hines (2022).

Widiger and Hines (2022) provide a brief overview of the development of the alternative model of personality disorder (AMPD) housed within Section 3 of the Fifth Edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). They highlight 8 issues and controversies related to the AMPD in need of resolution for improvement of both the AMPD model itself as well as the field of personality disorders more broadly. In this brief commentary, I add a 9th issue in need of attention both with respect to the AMPD but also within the field of personality d

Childhood Traumatic Experiences and Dimensional Models of Personality Disorder in DSM-5 and ICD-11: Opportunities and Challenges.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Childhood trauma is an important risk factor for the development of personality disorders (PDs), yet most research has been devoted to categorical models of personality pathology. Considering the introduction of a dimensional PD model with ICD-11, we review current findings related to various forms of childhood trauma, and PDs, operationalized in the form of personality functioning and maladaptive traits. We focus on the magnitude of associations and examine specific relationships between emotional and physical trauma with areas of personality functioning and single traits.

Prevalence and Correlates of Self-Stigma in Personality Disorder Compared With Anxiety and Depression: A National Cross-Sectional Survey.

Self-stigma occurs when a person with a mental illness internalises the negative stereotypes and attitudes associated with their condition, which can lead to reduced help-seeking and social withdrawal. Previous research has demonstrated high levels of professional stigma towards people with personality disorder, but in contrast to mental disorders such as anxiety and depression, very little is known about self-stigma in people with personality disorder. We conducted an online, cross-sectional survey of 1009 people who had received a diagnosis of personality disorder, anxiety or depression to c

Case report of a female-to-male transsexual homicide offender.

A 22 year old female-to-male half-Aboriginal transsexual had been exposed to gross neglect and violence, separation and inconsistent cultural supports during childhood. Her mother had also been convicted of homicide in a context of alcohol and violence. Transsexual identification, antisocial behaviours, self mutilation, substance abuse and unmet dependency needs were evident from childhood or early adolescence. The killing was a confrontational peer group stabbing in a brawl under influence of alcohol--the male mode of homicide. This is the first known case in world literature of a female-to-m

Personality adjustment of children and adolescents with hypopituitarism.

Sixteen children and adolescents with extreme short stature secondary to hypopituitarism were compared to a matched group of physically healthy peers on a variety of psychological tests assessing general adjustment, body image, sex role development, sex-related fantasy, and reactions to frustration. With the exception of their reactions to frustrations, the psychological adjustment of children with hypopituitarism compared favorably with that of normal children. Children with hypopituitarism typically perceived less adaptive, mature solutions to frustrating situations than did peers of average
