Since 1973 a prospective trial of antithrombotic agents for the prophylaxis of deep venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolism was undertaken in 386 high risk patients. Five drugs were employed: 1. Venous anatomy of the testis was reexamined by retrograde spermatic venography during surgery in 17 men with and in 11 without a varicocele. The route of venous drainage of the testis was the internal spermatic vein and the external pudendal vein. The cremasteric and vasal veins were smaller collaterals. There was no cross communication between the right and left spermatic venous systems in the scrotal, retropubic or pelvic areas. In men with a varicocele the spermatic venous plexus was formed of numerous venous sinuses and large dilated veins.

Compartment syndromes of the lower arm and lower leg are quite well known by now and have been often described in the literature. Those of the upper arm and thigh are rarer and those after pure closed lesion of the soft parts of the thigh are the subject of only sporadic reports in the literature. A recently observed case of this kind prompted the present case report and review of the literature.

A modified transfemoral technique for testicular venography and occlusion of the testicular vein (TV) was used to treat 30 patients with a total of 43 varicoceles (17 left-sided and 13 bilateral). Occlusion was satisfactory in all left varicoceles and 90% of right varicoceles. This coaxial technique facilitates subselective catheterization of the TV and its collaterals and enables coils to be placed deep within these vessels, either alone or in combination with detachable balloons.

A Budd-Chiari syndrome was observed in a 11 year-old girl who was admitted to hospital for abdominal pain and distension, soon followed by severe shock. X-ray investigations, surgery and autopsy showed partial stenosis of the common portion of the left hepatic veins associated with a complete obstruction of other hepatic veins but without alteration of the inferior vena cava.

Selective gonadal venography was performed on 9 adult patients with 11 nonpalpable undescended testes. The gonad was accurately localised pre-operatively on 7 occasions. Testicular agenesis was predicted in 2 instances and strongly suggested in 2 others. Four failures were recorded, 2 on the right and 2 on the left. Accurate pre-operative localisation shortened operative time and reduced the extent of the surgical exploration. The demonstration of agenesis of the testis may obviate the need for surgery.

Percutaneous venography of the internal spermatic vein was performed for the localization of unpalpable testicles in 5 patients varying from 4 to 45 years of age.
