Fever phobia: The impact of time and mortality--a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Fever phobia is a term that has been used to describe the exaggerated and unrealistic fear of fever expressed by parents and carers. Since the term was first used in the early 1980s, there have been numerous publications and guidelines stating that fever is not, in itself dangerous, however these fears persist. OBJECTIVES: Investigate the extent of fever phobia and to explore potential associations with time, under-5 mortality rate and geography. DATA SOURCES: Embase (1980 to week 1 2015) and Medline (1946 to week 1 2015) were searched using the terms 'fever' and 'phobia'; and 'f

One Session Treatment for Specific Phobias: An Adaptation for Paediatric Blood-Injection-Injury Phobia in Youth.

Blood-injection-injury (BII) phobia is a chronic and debilitating disorder, which has largely been neglected in the child literature. The present paper briefly reviews the aetiology of specific phobias with particular attention to BII and provides an integrated developmental model of this disorder in youth. Evidence-based treatments for child-specific phobias are discussed, and the development of a modified one session treatment (OST) approach to enhance treatment outcomes for BII phobia in children and adolescents is described. This approach is illustrated in two children with a primary diagn

Origins and outlook of interoceptive exposure.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Interoceptive exposure (IE) is a behavioral intervention that reduces anxiety sensitivity and distress associated with somatic sensations. In this discussion, we describe the history, current applications and additional clinical potential of IE. METHOD: We review the origins of IE and its historical application to panic disorder, as well as the accumulating evidence for transdiagnostic application to other disorders including post-traumatic stress disorder, social anxiety disorder, specific phobias and physical disorders. Then, we discuss ways in which IE could cont

Discussion of Berta Bornstein's "The Analysis of a Phobic Child".

Bornstein's paper is a true psychoanalytic study of a child, if ever there was one. The fine tracing and discussion of the technical detail, together with the clarity and exposition of the theoretical underpinning make it a truly deep and thorough study and a model for those of us doing this work and trying to understand what indeed we do and why. I should say that although I have read the writings of the (then) Hampstead Clinic's borderline workshop (Kut Rosenfeld and Sprince, 1965), I had not read this outstanding paper by Berta Bornstein, and I wish I had done so long ago. I shall begin wit

Co-Creativity and Interactive Repair: Commentary on Berta Bornstein's "The Analysis of a Phobic Child".

My comments focus on a consideration of three issues central to child psychoanalysis stimulated by rereading the classic paper by Berta Bornstein, "The Analysis of a Phobic Child: Some Problems of Theory and Technique in Child Analysis": (1) the importance of "co-creativity" and its use in analysis to repair disruptions in the mother-child relationship; (2) working analytically with the "inner world of the child "; and (3) the fundamental importance of multiple simultaneous meaning-making processes. I begin with a discussion of current thinking about the importance of interactive processes in

[Functional neuroimaging of the amygdala: the response to threatening and phobogenic stimuli].

Recent functional neuroimaging studies show that the amygdala has a central role in threat evaluation, in response to conditioned and unconditioned stimuli, in fear learning and fear extinction. The amygdala is involved in the pathophysiology of phobias and anxiety. In this review we critically examine the main findings of functional neuroimaging studies reporting data on the amygdala. Findings suggest that the response of the amygdala to threatening stimuli is mainly modulated by the infralimbic and prefrontal cortices, which inhibit activation of the amygdala (top-down inhibition), and by th

Entomophobia, acarophobia, parasitic dermatophobia or delusional parasitosis.

Entomophobia or acarophobia, parasitic dermatophobia (PD) or delusional parasitosis (DP) is a disorder in which affected individuals has the mistaken but unshakable belief (delusion) that they are infected by insects, spiders, scorpion, ticks, mites, parasitic worms, bacteria, or other living organisms. As with all delusions, this belief cannot be corrected by reasoning, persuasion, or logical argument. To avoid them, they may always be cleaning rooms, floors, doors, windows and scratching. Many affected individuals are quite functional; for the minority, delusions of parasitic infection may i

Attentional focus in social anxiety disorder: potential for interactive processes.

The two preeminent cognitive behavioral models of social anxiety [Clark, D.M., & Wells, A., (1995). A cognitive model of social phobia. In Heimberg, R.G., Liebowitz, M., Hope, D.A., and Schneier, F.R. (Eds.), Social phobia: Diagnosis, assessment and treatment (pp. 69-93). New York: Guilford Press.; Rapee, R.M., & Heimberg, R.G., (1997). A cognitive behavioral model of anxiety in social phobia. Behaviour Research and Therapy, 35, 741-756.] suggest that attention to threat stimuli is critical in the maintenance of social fear. However, Clark and Wells assert that socially anxious persons attend

Cardioinhibitory syncope due to bloodphobia associated asystole.

Neurocardiogenic syncope is not an uncommon occurrence in the general population and affects people across a wide range of age groups. Several sub-specialties are involved in the management of this phenomenon and quite often a multidisciplinary approach is needed for arriving at the final diagnosis and deciding on the optimal treatment for this condition. Often, a thorough history and physical examination will aid in narrowing the differential of syncope and, in the right setting, both passive and provocative testing can be complementary. Neurocardiogenic syncope with a malignant course is a s
