Illuminating Ligand Field Contributions to Molecular Qubit Spin Relaxation via T1 Anisotropy.

Electron spin relaxation in paramagnetic transition metal complexes constitutes a key limitation on the growth of molecular quantum information science. However, there exist very few experimental observables for probing spin relaxation mechanisms, leading to a proliferation of inconsistent theoretical models. Here we demonstrate that spin relaxation anisotropy in pulsed electron paramagnetic resonance is a powerful spectroscopic probe for molecular spin dynamics across a library of highly coherent Cu(II) and V(IV) complexes. Neither the static spin Hamiltonian anisotropy nor contemporary compu

Deformation and Failure Mechanisms of Thermoelectric Type-I Clathrate Ba8Au6Ge40.

Type-I clathrate Ba8Au6Ge40, possessing an interesting structure stacked by polyhedrons, is a potential "phonon-glass, electron-crystal" thermoelectric material. However, the mechanical properties of Ba8Au6Ge40 vital for industrial applications have not been clarified. Here, we report the first density functional theory calculations of the intrinsic mechanical properties of thermoelectric clathrate Ba8Au6Ge40. Among the different loading directions, the {110}/⟨001⟩ shearing and ⟨110⟩ tension are the weakest, with strengths of 4.51 and 6.64 GPa, respectively. Under {110}/⟨001⟩ shearing, the Ge-

First principles study of dense and metallic nitric sulfur hydrides.

Studies of molecular mixtures containing hydrogen sulfide (H2S) could open up new routes towards hydrogen-rich high-temperature superconductors under pressure. H2S and ammonia (NH3) form hydrogen-bonded molecular mixtures at ambient conditions, but their phase behavior and propensity towards mixing under pressure is not well understood. Here, we show stable phases in the H2S-NH3 system under extreme pressure conditions to 4 Mbar from first-principles crystal structure prediction methods. We identify four stable compositions, two of which, (H2S) (NH3) and (H2S) (NH3)4, are stable in a sequence

Temperature-dependent studies of a new two-dimensional cadmium dicyanamide framework exhibiting an unusual temperature-induced irreversible phase transition into a three-dimensional perovskite-like framework.

We report the synthesis, crystal structure, and thermal, dielectric, optical and phonon properties of a new two-dimensional (2D) cadmium(ii) complex [(C3H7)4N][Cd(N(CN)2)3]. Our results show that this compound crystallizes in a two-dimensional monoclinic structure, with the space group P2/n, with ordered tetrapropylammonium cations and disorder of some dicyanamide linkers. It undergoes a structural phase transition at 245 K into another low-temperature (LT) monoclinic structure, with the space group P21/n. X-ray diffraction, dielectric, IR and Raman studies show that freezing of the dca motion

Structural Rigidity Enables Amplified Spontaneous Emission in 2D Alkylammonium Tin Perovskites.

Two-dimensional tin perovskites are attracting increasing attention for coherent light emission, yet the impact of organic cations on their properties remains poorly understood. Here, we compare the Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) butylammonium tin iodide (BA2SnI4) and Dion-Jacobson (DJ) 1,4-diammoniobutane tin iodide (DABSnI4) perovskites to investigate the impact of the two structural types on their photophysical and optical gain properties. Combining X-ray diffraction and solid-state NMR spectroscopy, we reveal the different templating properties of the mono- and ditopic cations on the long-range st

Light-Driven Phase Engineering in 2D Materials From Mechanistic Assignment to Ambient Near-Field Control.

Light-driven phase transitions and transformations provide a route for post-synthesis control of structure, charge order, ferroic polarization, chemistry, and local transport in 2D materials. Optical excitation can activate carrier dynamics, phonon coupling, heating, strain redistribution, vacancy formation, surface reactions, and substrate-mediated effects during one experiment. Mechanistic assignment consequently requires separate identification of the process initiating conversion and the mechanism preserving the modified material. We organize representative experiments into seven practical

Identifying Degenerate Shear and Layer Breathing Modes in Few-Layer 1T-PtS2 by Circularly Polarized Raman Spectroscopy.

Quasi-covalent interlayer bonding in 1T-PtS2 gives rise to pronounced thickness-dependent optical and electronic properties, yet its impact on vibrational properties remains poorly understood. In particular, low-frequency interlayer vibrations probe directional restoring forces, but the shear and breathing components have not been independently identified in 1T-PtS2. In this work, nearly degenerate in-plane shear modes and out-of-plane layer-breathing modes in few-layer 1T-PtS2 are resolved using circularly polarized Raman spectroscopy. Helicity selection rules separate E-symmetry in-plane vib

Resonance fluorescence and indistinguishable photons from a coherently driven B centre in hBN.

Optically active defects in hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) have become amongst the most attractive single-photon emitters in the solid state, owing to their high-quality photophysical properties, combined with the unlimited possibilities of integration offered by the host van der Waals material. In particular, the B centres, with their narrow linewidth, low wavelength spread and controllable positioning, have raised a particular interest for integrated quantum photonics. However, to date, either their excitation or their detection has been performed non-resonantly due to the difficulty of rejec

Novel stable Janus HfNXH (X = S, Se, Te) monolayers: insights into piezoelectric, electronic, and transport behaviors.

In this work, we propose a novel class of two-dimensional Janus HfNXH (X = S, Se, Te) monolayers and systematically investigate their stability, electronic structure, piezoelectricity, and carrier mobility using first-principles calculations. Our analysis reveals that HfNSH and HfNSeH are indirect-bandgap semiconductors, whereas HfNTeH exhibits metallic behavior. The intrinsic out-of-plane structural asymmetry in these materials induces a substantial vacuum level offset and pronounced piezoelectric responses. Most notably, HfNTeH demonstrates an exceptionally large in-plane piezoelectric coeff

Uncovering a stable Cs2SnGeCl6-lead-free halide double perovskite for photovoltaics through integrated DFT and SCAPS-1D analysis.

Eco-friendly halide perovskites have garnered interest as viable options for next-generation optoelectronic and solar-energy technologies due to their adjustable bandgaps, robust light absorption, and excellent charge-transport properties. This study presents the inaugural comprehensive theoretical examination of the eco-friendly double perovskite 'Cs2SnGeCl6' through two methodologies: density functional theory (DFT) for elucidating the physical properties of this compound and SCAPS-1D simulations to assess its viability as an absorber layer in perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Tailoring Point Defects to Enhance Thermoelectric Performance in AgCuTe-Based Compounds.

Crystalline solids with intrinsically low lattice thermal conductivity are essential for advancing high-performance thermoelectric materials. Superionic conductor AgCuTe exhibits inherently low lattice thermal conductivity and exceptional tunability in both electronic and phononic transport, making it a promising candidate for medium-temperature thermoelectric applications. However, its practical deployment remains limited by suboptimal performance and insufficient optimization strategies. Here, we report a substantially enhanced dimensionless figure of merit (ZT) of ∼1.72 at 773 K in p-type p

First-principles prediction of ferromagnetic half-Heusler LiMnTe for spintronic applications.

First-principles calculations were performed to investigate the structural stability, magnetism, electronic structure, and intrinsic hall transport of half-Heusler LiMnTe. Among the considered phases, ferromagnetic β-LiMnTe is identified as the ground-state configuration, with an equilibrium lattice constant of 6.39 Å and an integer magnetic moment of 4.00 µ B per f.u. Its energetic, mechanical, and dynamical stability is supported by the negative formation energy, satisfaction of the Born-Huang criteria, and absence of imaginary phonon modes. At the PBE level, the Mn-d-dominated electronic st

Multiphase superconductivity in PdBi2.

Unconventional superconductivity, where electron pairing does not involve electron-phonon interactions, is often attributed to magnetic correlations in a material. Well known examples include high-Tc cuprates and uranium-based heavy fermion superconductors. Less explored are unconventional superconductors with strong spin-orbit coupling, where interactions between spin-polarised electrons and external magnetic field can result in multiple superconducting phases and field-induced transitions between them, a rare phenomenon in the superconducting state. Here we report a magnetic-field driven pha

Cation Tuning of Polaron Barriers in Layered Perovskites for Optical Spin Lifetime Control.

Layered metal-halide perovskites (L-MHPs) form self-assembled quantum wells with strongly bound excitons and electron-phonon interactions that promote polaron formation. Due to spin-orbit coupling and Rashba-type spin-splitting of the electronic bands, spin-polarized excitons can be photoexcited with circularly polarized light, making these materials promising in opto-spintronics. Recently, we have shown that photoexcitation with excess energy extends spin-lifetimes in (BA)2FAPb2I7 by over 2 orders of magnitude compared to resonant excitation and attributed this to polaron formation. Here, we

Multilayer A17 Black Antimonene via van der Waals Epitaxy.

Metastable layered antimony in the black phosphorus-like A17 phase exhibits promising electronic properties arising from pronounced spin-orbit coupling and suppressed phonon scattering. However, charge transport characterization has been severely constrained by insufficient crystal dimensions. Here, the dielectric-mediated van der Waals epitaxy of multilayer A17 black antimonene is reported, with the as-grown rectangular nanosheets exceeding 10 μm in length and exhibiting layer-dependent phase stability up to 16-layer stacking. Structural analysis reveals that monolayer nucleation favors zigza

Artificial Intelligence-Assisted Workflow for Transmission Electron Microscopy: From Data Analysis Automation to Materials Knowledge Unveiling.

(Scanning) transmission electron microscopy ((S)TEM) has significantly advanced materials science but faces challenges in correlating precise atomic structure information with the functional properties of devices due to its time-intensive nature. To address this, an analytical workflow is introduced for the holistic characterization, modelling, and simulation of device heterostructures. This workflow automates the experimental (S)TEM data analysis, providing an in-depth characterization of crystallographic information, 3D orientation, elemental composition, and strain distribution. It reduces

Breaking the "Seesaw Effect": 20.72% Efficiency Organic Solar Cells via Cascade Energy Transfer with a Fluorescent Sensitizer.

Though organic solar cells (OSCs) have achieved remarkable progress recently, the intrinsic limitation of the "seesaw effect" between open-circuit voltage (Voc) and short-circuit current density (Jsc) hinders their further improvements. In this study, a fluorescent small molecule, namely SD-EDOT, is incorporated into the widely used PM6:BTP-eC9 system to overcome this challenge. The addition of SD-EDOT lowers the energetic disorder and electron-phonon coupling within the system. More importantly, it forms an energy cascade between donor and acceptor, enabling a side cascade energy transfer pat

Unveiling Exciton-Molecular Crosstalk Mediating Photocatalysis on Perovskite Quantum Dots via In-Situ SERS.

Semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) have emerged as a paradigm-shifting catalytic platform for visible-light-driven organic synthesis, owing to their highly tunable excitonic properties. However, the critical role of nanoconfined exciton evolution in governing surface reactions remains experimentally elusive. Here, we synthesized Au@perovskite QD superstructures for in-situ surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy to probe exciton-molecular crosstalk during the photocatalytic self-coupling of aromatic thiols on QD surfaces. We find that quasi-ligand coordination of thiols with surface Pb sites simulta

Microwave-Excited Thermoelectric Catalysis of Organic-Inorganic Nanohybrid for Highly Effective Treatment of Staphylococcus aureus-Infected Osteomyelitis.

Osteomyelitis caused by Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) is difficult to cure with antibiotics or phototherapy. Microwave (MW) has become a promising method for treating deep tissue infections due to its strong penetration ability, however, the effects of MW dynamics still need to be improved to achieve rapid and effective treatment. In this work, tin selenide/polypyrrole (SnSe/PPy) nanocomposites with MW thermoelectric catalytic performance are successfully prepared, and their ideal thermal production capability stems from increased dielectric loss, including interfacial polarization and con

Magnetic exchange interactions at the proximity of a superconductor.

Interfacing magnetism with superconductivity gives rise to a wonderful playground for intertwining key degrees of freedom: Cooper pairs, spin, charge, and spin-orbit interaction, from which emerge a wealth of exciting phenomena, fundamental in the nascent field of superconducting spinorbitronics and topological quantum technologies. Magnetic exchange interactions (MEIs), being isotropic or chiral such as the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions, are vital in establishing the magnetic behavior at these interfaces as well as in dictating not only complex transport phenomena, but also the manifesta
