Diel periodicity and visual cues guide oviposition behavior in Phlebotomus papatasi, vector of old-world cutaneous leishmaniasis.

BACKGROUND: Phlebotomine sand flies are vectors of human leishmaniases, important neglected tropical diseases. In this study, we investigate … s within free-flight test chambers containing gravid females entrained under a 14:10 hrs light:dark photoperiod. By replacing sticky-screens or moist filter papers every three hours, we showed that oviposition site search occurs mainly in the latest part of the night whereas peak oviposition occurs during the early part of the night. Behavioral responses to o …

Scotostimulation of reproductive neural pathways and gonadal maturation are not correlated with hypothalamic expression of deiodinases in subtropical spotted munia.

Circannual rhythm regulates the annual timing of reproduction in spotted munia, with sex differences in its relationship with the external photoperiod environment. Interestingly, munia show an atypical photosensitivity and exhibit gonadal maturation when acutely exposed to an unnatural short photoperiod (eg 3 hours of light per day; ie a long scotoperiod). The proximate mechanisms regulating scotoperiod-induced hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) activation are unclear. Because thyroid hormone signalling plays a central role in photoperiodic induction, we hypothesised the involvement of simil…

Effect of exogenous oestradiol and lighting regime on age at first egg in domestic pullets.

1. Groups of ISA Brown pullets were transferred from 8- to 16-h photoperiods at 34, 44 or 54 d. In each group, 12 birds were injected on alternate days over a 12-d period starting 6 d before the change in photoperiod with beta-oestradiol-3-benzoate (1 mg/kg body weight) or with arachis oil vehicle (controls). Short-day controls were similarly injected from 28 to 40 d. Long-day (16 h) controls were also included in the trial but were not injected. Age at first egg (AFE) was recorded and plasma luteinising hormone (LH) concentrations were measured around the time of oestradiol treatment. 2. Mean…

Effects of Extreme Light Cycle and Density on Melatonin, Appetite, and Energy Metabolism of the Soft-Shelled Turtle (Pelodiscus sinensis).

Constant darkness and constant light exposure often disturb the circadian rhythm in the behavior and energy metabolism of vertebrates. Melatonin is known as the hormonal mediator of photoperiodic information to the central nervous system and plays a key role in food intake and energy balance regulation in vertebrates. The popularly cultured soft-shelled turtle Pelodiscus sinensis has been reported to grow better under constant darkness; however, the underlying physiological mechanism by which darkness benefits turtle growth is not clear yet. We hypothesized that increased melatonin levels indu…

Human seasonal and circadian studies in Antarctica (Halley, 75°S).

Living for extended periods in Antarctica exposes base personnel to extremes of daylength (photoperiod) and temperature. At the British Antarctic Survey base of Halley, 75°S, the sun does not rise for 110 d in the winter and does not set for 100 d in summer. Photoperiod is the major time cue governing the timing of seasonal events such as reproduction in many species. The neuroendocrine signal providing photoperiodic information to body physiology is the duration of melatonin secretion which reflects the length of the night: longer in the short days of winter and shorter in summer. Light of su…

Can Mimosa pudica Plants Enumerate Light Exposure Events?

Plants sense and respond to information present in their surrounding environment. Recent work has sought to characterize the limits of these information processing abilities. Here, we present evidence that the movements of Mimosa pudica plants are mediated by the number of illumination events to which they have been exposed. The plants were repeatedly presented with 2 days in which light was provided for half of the day, followed by a third day in which light was not provided. The nyctinastic movements of the plants shifted to follow this light-light-dark pattern. During early, dark hours prio

Understanding how environmental factors influence reproductive aspects of wild myomorphic and hystricomorphic rodents.

Myomorphic and hystricomorphic rodents are vital for maintaining various ecosystems around the planet. This review enables a better understanding of how these rodents respond to environmental factors and adapt to climate adversities. Innumerable factors, such as photoperiod, rainfall, and temperature, can impair or contribute to the quality of rodent reproductive parameters. Prolonged animal exposure to high ambient temperatures alters thermoregulation mechanisms and causes testicular and ovarian tissue degeneration and hormonal deregulation. Photoperiod influences the biological circannual rh…

Environmental drivers on leaf phenology of ironstone outcrops species under seasonal climate.

Banded iron formations (BIF) have a particular vegetation type and provide a good model system for testing theories related to leaf phenology, due to unique stressful environmental conditions. As a consequence of the stressful conditions of BIF environment, we hypothesize that most species would retain at least some significant canopy cover, even at the end of the dry season, independently of growth form - trees, shrubs, and sub-shrubs. Considering the strong seasonality, we also hypothesize that photoperiod and rainfall act as triggers for leaf fall and leaf flushing in these environments. Th…

Biological Sex Influences Daily Locomotor Rhythms in Mice Held Under Different Housing Conditions.

Daily rhythms are programmed by a central circadian clock that is modulated by photoperiod. Here, we recorded locomotor activity rhythms in C57Bl/6 or mPer2Luc mice of both sexes held under different housing conditions. First, we confirm that the structure of locomotor activity rhythms differs between male and female mice in both genetic backgrounds. Male mice exhibit a nightly "siesta," whereas female mice fluctuate between nights with and without a nightly siesta, which corresponds with changes in locomotor activity levels, circadian period, and vaginal cytology. The nightly siesta is modula…

Melatonin and Seasonal Synchrony in Mammals.

In mammals, seasonal opportunities and challenges are anticipated through programmed changes in physiology and behavior. Appropriate anticipatory timing depends on synchronization to the external solar year, achieved through the use of day length (photoperiod) as a synchronizing signal. In mammals, nocturnal production of melatonin by the pineal gland is the key hormonal mediator of photoperiodic change, exerting its effects via the hypothalamopituitary axis. In this review/perspective, we consider the key developments during the history of research into the seasonal synchronizer effect of mel…

Universality and diversity in the signal transduction pathway that regulates seasonal reproduction in vertebrates.

Most vertebrates living outside the tropical zone show robust physiological responses in response to seasonal changes in photoperiod, such as seasonal reproduction, molt, and migration. The highly sophisticated photoperiodic mechanism in Japanese quail has been used to uncover the mechanism of seasonal reproduction. Molecular analysis of quail mediobasal hypothalamus (MBH) revealed that local thyroid hormone activation within the MBH plays a critical role in the photoperiodic response of gonads. This activation is accomplished by two gene switches: thyroid hormone-activating (DIO2) and thyroid…

Effects of nightbreak, T-cycle, and resonance lighting schedules on the pineal melatonin rhythm of the lizard Anolis carolinensis: correlations with the reproductive response.

Experiments were conducted to determine if a correlation exists between any aspect of the pineal melatonin rhythm (such as its duration or phase) in the lizard Anolis carolinensis and the reproductive response to photoperiod. The rhythm of pineal melatonin content was determined in anoles exposed to nightbreak lighting protocols (10L:5D:1L:8D, 10L:10D:1L:3D), resonance lighting cycles (LD 11:13, LD 11:25), and T-cycle lighting protocols (LD 11:7, LD 11:9, LD 11:13, LD 11:15, LD 11:19) and compared with the testicular response to these lighting protocols as determined previously [Underwood and …

Geographic Divergence and the Genomic Basis of Reproductive Diapause in Drosophila triauraria.

Adjusting reproduction timing to environmental cues is essential for lifetime fitness. In many insects, reproductive diapause shows clinal variation along environmental gradients such as photoperiod and temperature. How such continuous trait variation may be encoded at the molecular level and maintained in the presence of gene flow remains largely elusive. The fruit fly Drosophila triauraria is distributed across a wide latitudinal range of the Japanese archipelago. Northern strains exhibit a strong photoperiodic reproductive diapause in females, whereas southern strains fail to arrest ovarian…

Effect of daytime light intensity on daily behaviours and concurrent hypothalamic gene expressions in migratory redheaded bunting.

Animals use photic cues to time their daily and seasonal activity. The role of photoperiod has been much investigated in seasonal responses, but the role of light intensity is less understood in passerine finches. We investigated if and how daytime light intensity influences photoinduced migratory phenologies and hypothalamic mRNA expressions in a Palearctic-Indian migratory finch, redheaded bunting (Emberiza bruniceps). Photoperiodic manipulations were employed to induce winter-nonmigratory (NM), premigratory (PM), and migratory (MIG) states in photosensitive buntings. In each life history st…

Lesions of the melatonin- and androgen-responsive tissue of the dorsomedial nucleus of the hypothalamus block the gonadal response of male Syrian hamsters to programmed infusions of melatonin.

The objective of this study was to characterize a site at which it is likely that melatonin mediates photoperiodic control of reproduction in the male Syrian hamster. The first experiment was a comparison of the distributions of iodomelatonin (IMEL)-binding sites and cells immunoreactive to androgen receptors (AR-ir) in the medio-basal hypothalamus (MBH). AR-ir cells extended throughout the MBH, whereas IMEL binding was restricted to the dorsomedial nucleus (DMN). Comparisons between IMEL binding and AR-ir on adjacent cryostat sections revealed a clear overlap between the IMEL-binding sites an…

Effect of lighting programs during the pullet phase on skeletal integrity of egg-laying strains of chickens.

Egg-laying strains of chickens are highly susceptible to osteoporosis, a noninfectious disease characterized by a decrease in structural bone as hens age. To minimize the onset of osteoporosis, it was hypothesized that a delay in sexual maturity may allow a pullet to develop a stronger skeletal frame before egg laying, leading to improved skeletal mineralization at end of lay. One management tool that can easily be implemented by pullet growers to delay sexual maturity is length of photoperiod. The objective of the current study was to determine whether lighting programs used during the pullet…
