OBJECTIVE: Ochronosis is a term used to describe pigment deposition that occurs in the connective tissues of patients with alkaptonuria, an autosomal recessive disorder that results from a deficiency of homogentisic acid oxidase. Brown or blue-gray discoloration of the skin may be seen on the axillary and inguinal areas, face, palms or soles. In addition, blue-black discoloration can be apparent on skin overlying cartilage in which the pigment is deposited, such as the ears. The sclerae are also typically involved. The cheapest screening test to perform prior to expensive lab tests is the urin

Neuromelanin-containing dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNpc) are the most vulnerable neurons in Parkinson's disease (PD). Recent work suggests that the accumulation of oxidized dopamine and neuromelanin mediate the convergence of mitochondrial and lysosomal dysfunction in patient-derived neurons. In addition, the expression of human tyrosinase in mouse SNpc led to the formation of neuromelanin resulting in the degeneration of nigral dopaminergic neurons, further highlighting the importance of neuromelanin in PD. The potential role of neuromelanin in PD pathogenesis

Pigmentation disorders such as albinism are occasionally associated with hearing impairments in mammals. Therefore, we wanted to investigate whether such a phenomenon also exists in non-mammalian vertebrates. We measured the hearing abilities of normally pigmented and albinotic specimens of two catfish species, the European wels Silurus glanis (Siluridae) and the South American bronze catfish Corydoras aeneus (Callichthyidae). The non-invasive auditory evoked potential (AEP) recording technique was utilized to determine hearing thresholds at 10 frequencies from 0.05 to 5 kHz. Neither auditory …

The entorhinal region is an important center of the limbic system involved in many dementing disorders. The boundaries of the entorhinal region of the left and right hemispheres were investigated in tangential sections (5 individuals, age range 21 to 29 years). This method preserves the rostral portion of the entorhinal region which is usually lost in coronal sectioning. The sections were stained with the pigment-Nissl-method. The superficial cellular layer of the centromedial part of the entorhinal region consists of large heavily pigmented neurons forming islands clearly separated from each

Exogenous ochronosis refers to accumulation of homogentisic acid metabolites in tissues, manifesting as pigmentation of affected tissues. Phenolic compounds are most commonly implicated, including hydroquinone, quinine, phenol, resorcinol, mercury, and picric acid. The affected connective tissues exhibit brownish discoloration when heavily pigmented and the histopathological appearance is characteristic with "banana-shaped" ochre-colored pigment deposits. Herein, the authors describe a rare case of exogenous ochronosis involving the conjunctiva, sclera and skin, as a result of chronic use of T

"Poikiloderma" is a morphologic and descriptive term referring to a combination of cutaneous atrophy, telangiectasia, and varied macular pigmentary changes that result in a mottled skin appearance. Its etiology includes both congenital and acquired causes. Many studies have reported different causes of acquired poikiloderma; however, no single well-defined classification has been explored to date. Herein, we analyze all the possible causes of acquired poikiloderma and propose an etiological classification that, hopefully, will lead to better characterization for this ill-defined condition. Mor

Seventeen patients with 22 areas of postsclerotherapy hyperpigmentation lasting from 1 to 7 years were treated with a flashlamp-excited pulsed dye laser at 510 nm with a pulse duration of 300 nanoseconds between 2 to 3 J/cm2. Depth of hemosiderin pigmentation ranged from 0.2 to 2.8 mm. Forty-five percent of lesions lightened after treatment with significant lightening occurring in 27% of lesions. Four lesions in two patients developed postinflammatory hyperpigmentation after treatment. There was no significant difference in treatment response to pigment location or laser energy.
