Pityriasis rosea-like eruption due to bismuth.

We report a case of bismuth-induced pityriasis rosea-like drug eruption. Although historical accounts of bismuth hypersensitivity exist, contemporary reports are lacking. Given the frequency of bismuth administration, a modern review of this phenomenon would seem prudent.

Atypical presentations of pityriasis rosea: case presentations.

Atypical cases of pityriasis rosea (PR) are fairly common and less readily recognized than typical eruptions. We present four patients for whom we believe atypical PR is the most likely diagnosis. A 33-year-old man had purpuric lesions bilaterally on the legs with classical rash on the trunk. A 28-year-old woman had intensely pruritic and urticarial lesions. A 10-year-old girl had hundreds of small papular lesions 1-3 mm in size. A pregnant woman aged 26 had oral haemorrhagic ulcers with classical PR eruption on her trunk. The oral ulcers erupted and remitted at the same time as the generalize…

Pityriasis lichenoides et varioliformis acuta during pregnancy.

Pityriasis lichenoides et varioliformis acuta (PLEVA) is a disorder of unknown aetiology that occurs at any age and can be localized on the skin and on the mucosas. We report the case of a 24-year-old woman who presented PLEVA at her 20th week of gestation. This is, to our knowledge, the second case of PLEVA during pregnancy reported in literature. We report this case for the importance of the diagnosis of PLEVA during pregnancy because of the possible involvement of the mucosal membranes, and in particular of the vagina or cervical os of the uterus, where it may cause premature labour and/or …

Pityriasis lichenoides et varioliformis acuta in pregnancy.

Pityriasis lichenoides et varioliformis acuta is an uncommon disease, especially during pregnancy. In review of the obstetric literature, there was no report of pityriasis lichenoides et varioliformis acuta during pregnancy. A 25-year-old female was seen at 24 weeks of gestation for consultation about a cutaneous disease. She was admitted at 30 weeks of gestation because of threatened premature labor, and some active cutaneous papules presented themselves at that time. After the treatment, cutaneous papules remitted. But at 35 weeks of gestation, she had spontaneous labor. Both the mother and …

Pityriasis lichenoides-like mycosis fungoides in children.

We report three children with clinical features of pityriasis lichenoides (scaly red to brown papules and macules) in whom there were histopathological findings of mycosis fungoides (disproportionate epidermotropism, Pautrier's microabscesses, and wiry and coarse collagen bundles). Immunohistochemical staining revealed a prevalence of T lymphocytes in the infiltrate. T-cell receptor gene rearrangement analysis in lesional skin demonstrated rearrangement of the gamma chain in all cases. Human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1 serology was negative in the two patients in whom this test was perfor…

Pityriasis rubra pilaris and focal acantholytic dyskeratosis.

A 65-year-old man presented with a widespread erythematous maculopapular eruption. Skin biopsy showed spongiosis and focal acantholytic dyskeratosis consistent with Grover's disease. Clinically the eruption evolved to erythroderma with typical features of pityriasis rubra pilaris. On review of the histology, changes consistent with this diagnosis were also present in addition to the acantholytic dyskeratosis.

Pityriasis rubra pilaris: a new proposed classification.

Clinical features of pityriasis rubra pilaris (PRP) were classified into four types based on a study of 168 cases. All patients, except one case of type IV, and 12 cases of type II, have salmon-coloured or erythematous thick plaques on the palms and soles, which extended beyond the dorsopalmar and plantar junctions. Twenty-one children and 11 adults presenting with such plaques were classified as type I PRP. Fifty-nine children and 27 adults presenting with circumscribed scaly erythematous patches on the elbows and knees were classified as type II. Twenty children and 16 adults with similar pa…

Pityriasis lichenoides et varioliformis acuta immunohistopathologic study.

Immunoglobulin M and complement (Clq, C3 and C9) were found to be deposited together in the walls of affected blood vessels and also in the basement membrane zone of skin lesions from two patients with pityriasis lichenoides et varioliformis acuta (PLVA). The fluorescence appeared to be most intensely distributed in blood vessels which were affected by inflammatory infiltrates and frequently showed hyaline or fibrinoid changes of their walls. Deposits of C3 activator, fibrin and albumin were not observed. These findings suggest that the disease process in PLVA is the result of a vasculitis med…
