Improved Cd, Zn and Mn tolerance and reduced Cd accumulation in grains with wheat-based cell number regulator TaCNR2.

Soil microelement deficiency and heavy metal contamination affects plant growth and development, but improving trace element uptake and reducing heavy metal accumulation by genetic breeding can help alleviate this. Cell number regulator 2 (TaCNR2) from common wheat (Triticum aestivum) are similar to plant cadmium resistance proteins, involved with regulating heavy metal translocation. Our aim was to understand the effect of TaCNR2 on heavy metal tolerance and translocation. In this study, real-time quantitative PCR indicated TaCNR2 expression in the wheat seedlings increased under Cd, Zn and M

Cholesterol accumulation by suppression of SMT1 leads to dwarfism and improved drought tolerance in herbaceous plants.

Dwarfism and drought tolerance are 2 valuable traits in breeding of many crops. In this study, we report the novel physiological roles of cholesterol in regulation of plant growth and drought tolerance. Compared with the wild type, sterol-C24-methyltransferase 1 (SMT1) gene transcript was greatly reduced in a bermudagrass mutant with dwarfism and enhanced drought tolerance, accompanied with cholesterol accumulation, elevated transcript levels of a small group of genes including SAMDC, and increased concentrations of putrescine (Put), spermidine (Spd), and spermine (Spm). Knock-down of OsSMT1 e

Quantitative Succinyl-Proteome Profiling of Camellia sinensis cv. 'Anji Baicha' During Periodic Albinism.

Lysine succinylation is a novel dynamic and evolutionarily conserved post-translational modification (PTM) that regulates various biological processes. 'Anji Baicha' is an albino tea variety that exhibits temperature-based variability of leaf colour and amino acid concentrations. However, the mechanism underlying albinism in 'Anji Baicha' has not been investigated at the level of succinylation. Here, we identify 3530 lysine succinylation sites mapped to 2132 proteins in 'Anji Baicha', representing the first extensive data on the lysine succinylome in the tea plant. Eleven conserved succinylati

Tomato sucrose transporter 2 facilitates Pseudomonas syringae proliferation via sugar efflux and repressing salicylic acid biosynthesis.

Bacterial pathogens require carbohydrates from host plants to support their proliferation, in which sugar transporters play critical roles. Sucrose transporters (SUTs) execute phloem loading, while their functions in the plant-pathogen interaction are largely unknown. Here, we pinpoint the role of SlSUT2 during Pseudomonas syringae pv tomato (Pst) DC3000 infection of tomato plants. SlSUT2 transcription is positively correlated with bacterial proliferation during Pst DC3000 infection. Knocking out SlSUT2 impairs plant growth and enhances resistance to the pathogen. The slsut2 mutant has reduced

A B-Box (BBX) Transcription Factor from Cucumber, CsCOL9 Positively Regulates Resistance of Host Plant to Bemisia tabaci.

B-box (BBX) transcription factors play crucial roles in plant growth, development, and defense responses to biotic and abiotic stresses. In this study, we cloned a BBX transcription factor gene, CsCOL9I, from cucumber and analyzed its role in the plant's defense against the feeding of Bemisia tabaci. CsCOL9 is expressed throughout all developmental stages in cucumber, with the highest expression in the leaves. CsCOL9 is induced by B. tabaci feeding, salicylic acid (SA), methyl jasmonate (MeJA), and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Cucumber plants with CsCOL9 silence (TRV2-CsCOL9) and overexpression (

The CaALAD Gene From Pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) Confers Chilling Stress Tolerance in Transgenic Arabidopsis Plants.

The ALAD gene encodes an enzyme that is essential for chlorophyll biosynthesis and is involved in many other physiological processes in plants. In this study, the CaALAD gene was cloned from pepper and sequenced. Multiple sequence alignment and phylogenetic analysis of ALAD proteins from nine plant species showed that ALAD is highly conserved, and that CaALAD shows the highest homology with the ALAD protein from eggplant. Subcellular localization indicated that the CaALAD protein is mainly localized to the chloroplasts. After transferring CaALAD into the Arabidopsis thaliana genome, cold toler

Survivorship of adult Aedes albopictus (Diptera: Culicidae) feeding on indoor ornamental plants with no inflorescence.

The international trade of lucky bamboo (Dracaena sanderiana [Asparagaceae]) is responsible for certain introductions of the exotic species Aedes albopictus (Skuse) in California and the Netherlands. Understanding the association of this species with lucky bamboo and other ornamental plants is important from a public health standpoint. The aim of this study was to investigate the importance of indoor ornamental plants as sugar sources for adult A. albopictus. If exposed to D. sanderiana, bromeliad (Guzmania spp. hybrid [Bromeliaceae]), Moses-in-the-cradle (Rhoeo spathacea [Commelinaceae]), 10

Silica nanoparticles protect rice against biotic and abiotic stresses.

BACKGROUND: By 2050, the world population will increase to 10 billion which urged global demand for food production to double. Plant disease and land drought will make the situation more dire, and safer and environment-friendly materials are thus considered as a new countermeasure. The rice blast fungus, Magnaporthe oryzae, causes one of the most destructive diseases of cultivated rice worldwide that seriously threatens rice production. Unfortunately, traditional breeding nor chemical approaches along control it well. Nowadays, nanotechnology stands as a new weapon against these mounting chall

Attraction of Three Mirid Predators to Tomato Infested by Both the Tomato Leaf Mining Moth Tuta absoluta and the Whitefly Bemisia tabaci.

Plants emit volatile compounds in response to insect herbivory, which may play multiple roles as defensive compounds and mediators of interactions with other plants, microorganisms and animals. Herbivore-induced plant volatiles (HIPVs) may act as indirect plant defenses by attracting natural enemies of the attacking herbivore. We report here the first evidence of the attraction of three Neotropical mirid predators (Macrolophus basicornis, Engytatus varians and Campyloneuropsis infumatus) toward plants emitting volatiles induced upon feeding by two tomato pests, the leaf miner Tuta absoluta and

Light-chilling Stress Causes Hyper-accumulation of Iron in Shoot, Exacerbating Leaf Oxidative Damage in Cucumber.

Iron availability within the root system of plants fluctuates depending on various soil factors, which directly impacts plant growth. Simultaneously, various environmental stressors, such as high/low temperatures and high light intensity, affect plant photosynthesis in the leaves. However, the combined effects of iron nutrient conditions and abiotic stresses have not yet been clarified. In this study, we analyzed how iron nutrition conditions impact the chilling-induced damage on cucumber leaves (Cucumis sativus L.). When cucumbers were grown under different iron conditions and then exposed to

Cadmium Phytotoxicity, Tolerance, and Advanced Remediation Approaches in Agricultural Soils; A Comprehensive Review.

Cadmium (Cd) is a major environmental contaminant due to its widespread industrial use. Cd contamination of soil and water is rather classical but has emerged as a recent problem. Cd toxicity causes a range of damages to plants ranging from germination to yield suppression. Plant physiological functions, i.e., water interactions, essential mineral uptake, and photosynthesis, are also harmed by Cd. Plants have also shown metabolic changes because of Cd exposure either as direct impact on enzymes or other metabolites, or because of its propensity to produce reactive oxygen species, which can ind

Genome-Wide Characterization of Genetic Diversity and Population Structure in a Kazakhstani Two-Row Spring Barley Breeding Panel.

Barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) is a major cereal in Kazakhstan, where diverse breeding material supports crop improvement. We characterized 86 two-row spring barley accessions from six breeding organizations using the Illumina Infinium 50K Barley SNP Array. Analysis of 29,920 high-quality SNPs revealed moderate diversity (He = 0.346, PIC = 0.278, Shannon = 0.752), with 80.84% of molecular variation occurring within and 19.16% among breeding organizations. A minor allele frequency-free (MAF-free) analysis showed that 95.61% of marker-allele combinations at polymorphic loci were shared by at least

Rice diversity panel provides accurate genomic predictions for complex traits in the progenies of biparental crosses involving members of the panel.

Rice breeding programs based on pedigree schemes can use a genomic model trained with data from their working collection to predict performances of progenies produced through rapid generation advancement. So far, most potential applications of genomic prediction in plant improvement have been explored using cross validation approaches. This is the first empirical study to evaluate the accuracy of genomic prediction of the performances of progenies in a typical rice breeding program. Using a cross validation approach, we first analyzed the effects of marker selection and statistical methods on

From Seedling Architecture to Grain: Linking Root and Shoot Traits with Yield Potential for Climate-Resilient Wheat Breeding.

Improving wheat for climate change requires understanding how seedling root systems affect adult plant performance. We evaluated 116 spring bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) genotypes across 25 traits under non-limiting moisture conditions. Analysis of variance revealed significant genotypic variation (p < 0.01) for all traits. High broad-sense heritability (H2 up to 99.81%) and close alignment between genotypic (GCV) and phenotypic (PCV) coefficients of variation indicated substantial genotypic differentiation among the evaluated accessions under these experimental conditions. A 21-predictor

Multiple origins of the apple seed microbiome: disentangling sexual and asexual transmission pathways.

BACKGROUND: The seed microbiome plays a key role in the assembly of the plant microbiome, which has major impacts on plant health. Nonetheless, little is known about the origin of the seed microbiome. We investigated the relative contributions of two potential transmission routes: sexual inheritance (via reproductive organs) and asexual inheritance (via the plant vascular system). To do that, we sampled flower ovaries and pollen sacs, fruiting spurs both before bloom and at seed maturity stages and mature seeds from five field-grown apple trees (Malus domestica BORKH. cv 'Gala Galaxy Selecta')

Rhizosphere Dialogue: Microorganisms Mediated by Root Exudates Alleviate Drought Stress in Grasses.

Drought stress threatens the ecological functions and economic value of grasses, posing a major challenge to their sustainable production. Plants co-evolve with rhizosphere microbial communities, sometimes described as the plant's second genome, that can contribute to drought adaptation. Drought alters root architecture, hormonal and redox regulation and belowground carbon allocation, thereby modifying the quantity and composition of root exudation and reshaping the rhizosphere environment. This review uses the rhizosphere dialogue as an integrative framework to link these plant responses with

The ZmMIR319A-ZmTCP5/44 module bifurcates into two pathways to coordinately regulate leaf angle and thermotolerance in maize.

Global warming increasingly threatens crop productivity, necessitating new varieties that combine high yield potential with climate resilience. Optimizing plant architecture, particularly by reducing leaf angle (LA), enables dense planting and enhanced light capture, yet the mechanisms coordinating architecture improvement with heat tolerance remain largely unknown. Here, we identify the microRNA ZmMIR319A as a key regulator that simultaneously regulates LA and thermotolerance in maize. ZmMIR319A promotes LA by post-transcriptionally repressing Teosinte branched1/Cycloidea/PCF (TCP) transcript

Chitinase 38 confers cadmium tolerance via reduced cadmium uptake and metabolic reprogramming in barley.

Soil cadmium (Cd) contamination threatens crop productivity and food safety. Chitinase genes (Chit) are well characterized for their roles in plant defense against biotic stresses, but their functions in Cd stress responses remain elusive. Here, we functionally characterize HvChit38, a novel Cd-induced Class I chitinase gene from a Cd-tolerant barley genotype. Chit38 sequences are highly conserved during green plant evolution, with a likely origin from streptophyte algae. HvChit38 overexpression significantly improves plant growth and yield and substantially reduces Cd concentrations in roots,

Multi-Omics Integration Unravels the Genetic and Hormonal Regulatory Mechanisms Underlying Increased Main Stem Node Number in Soybean.

Soybean (Glycine max L.) yield is critically influenced by the number of nodes on the main stem (MSN), which serves as the primary site for pods and seeds. To elucidate the genetic mechanisms underlying MSN, we conducted a multi-omics analysis integrating bulk segregant analysis sequencing (BSA-seq), phytohormone, and transcriptome profilings in a soybean mutant, LSD914, which exhibits a significantly increased MSN number compared to its wild-type parent, HN48. BSA-seq of an F2 population identified 27 candidate genomic regions spanning 2.92 Mb, primarily on chromosome 18. Within these regions
