The absolute necessity for magnesium in plant and animal nutrition is easily appreciated when one realizes that magnesium is found in high concentration in cells. It is necessary for photosynthesis in plants and for all reactions involving adenosine triphosphate in plant and animal cells. Although it is abundant in nature in general, deficiencies occur in both plants and animals. Human beings need about 5 mg of magnesium per kg of body weight per day. Infants and young children need twice as much. Children and women during pregnancy or lactation require significantly greater amounts than norma

Sulfur dioxide (SO2) is considered as a main air pollutant in industrialized areas that can damage vegetation. In the present study, we investigated how exposure to SO2 and foliar application of iron (Fe) would affect certain physiological characteristics of Plantago major. The plant seedlings exposed or unexposed to SO2 (3900 μg m-3) were non-supplemented or supplemented with Fe (3 g L-1) as foliar spray. Plants were exposed to SO2 for 6 weeks in 100 × 70 × 70 cm chambers. Fumigation of plants with SO2 was performed for 3 h daily for 3 days per week (alternate day). Lower leaf Fe concentratio

Plant height is a vital agronomic trait that greatly determines crop yields because of the close relationship between plant height and lodging resistance. Legumes play a unique role in the worldwide agriculture; however, little attention has been given to the molecular basis of their height. Here, we characterized the first dwarf mutant mini plant 1 (mnp1) of the model legume plant Medicago truncatula. Our study found that both cell length and the cell number of internodes were reduced in a mnp1 mutant. Using the forward genetic screening and subsequent whole-genome resequencing approach, we c

Host plant selection may depend on the metabolic system in herbivorous insects. Although oligophagous insects take up specific host plant components, how host plant components and their biological activities are altered through their metabolic systems remains unknown. Here, by examining gene expression of metabolic enzymes and components in the larval frass, we investigated the metabolic ability of Papilio memnon larvae fed with Citrus x paradisi (grapefruit) against host plant components. The gene expression levels of some metabolic enzymes were fluctuated between the larval midgut and the la

Plant defense to microbial pathogens is often accompanied by significant growth inhibition. How plants merge immune system function with normal growth and development is still poorly understood. Here, we investigated the role of target of rapamycin (TOR), an evolutionary conserved serine/threonine kinase, in the plant defense response. We used rice as a model system and applied a combination of chemical, genetic, genomic and cell-based analyses. We demonstrate that ectopic expression of TOR and Raptor (regulatory-associated protein of mTOR), a protein previously demonstrated to interact with T

Microscopic examination of horse caecum contents revealed vegetative growth of phycomycete fungi on particles of digesta, and uniflagellated cells similar to fungal zoospores in the liquid phase. Three morphologically distinct isolates of strictly anaerobic phycomycete fungi were obtained from the caecum contents and cultured in vitro. Two of the isolates were able to utilize a wide range of plant carbohydrates for growth, including alpha-cellulose, xylan and particulate starch, and extensively digested water-insoluble plant tissues.

Rho-like GTPases from plants (ROPs) constitute a plant-specific subfamily of Rho-family small GTPases. The Rho family is conserved among all eukaryotic cells, and includes the Rho, Rac and Cdc42 subfamilies found in fungi and animals. Like other GTPases, ROPs act as molecular switches that cycle between the inactive GDP-bound and active GTP-bound states, and are typically involved in cell signaling. Functional studies have demonstrated that ROPs play key roles in regulating processes such as the establishment of cell polarity, polar growth of cells (e.g., pollen tubes and root hairs), cell sha

BACKGROUND: ATP-citrate lyase (ACL) plays a pivotal role in histone acetylation and aerobic glycolysis. In plant, ACL is a heteromeric enzyme composed of ACLA (45 kD) and ACLB (65 kD). So far, the function of ACL genes in cotton still remains unknown.
RESULTS: Here, we identified three ACLA homologous sequences and two ACLB homologous in each genome/sub-genome of cotton species. Silencing ACLB in cotton led to cell death at newly-grown leaves and stem apexes. Simultaneously, in ACLB-silenced plants, transcription factors related to senescence including SGR, WRKY23 and Osl57 were observed to b

The uptake and accumulation of organic contaminants by plants can be detrimental to the plant itself as well as consumers. Tetracycline antibiotics are present at trace levels in soil and water. Under typical environmental conditions, they exist as zwitterions. Comparatively little is known of their uptake and accumulation by plants, or the mechanism by which this occurs. To examine this, rice (Oryza sativa L.) was employed, together with a static diffusion cell equipped with a cellulose membrane as a model for the uptake process. For rice, kinetic results suggested that the zwitterions were b

Plant-derived bioactive compounds, often called phytochemicals, are active substances extracted from different plants. These bioactive compounds can release therapeutic potential abilities via reducing antitumor drugs side effects or directly killing cancer cells, and others also can adjust cancer initiation and progression via regulating microRNAs (miRNAs) expression, and miRNA can regulate protein-coding expression by restraining translation or degrading target mRNA. A mass of research showed that plant-derived bioactive compounds including tanshinones, astragaloside IV, berberine, ginsenosi

Callogenesis, the process during which explants derived from differentiated plant tissues are subjected to a trans-differentiation step characterized by the proliferation of a mass of cells, is fundamental to indirect organogenesis and the establishment of cell suspension cultures. Therefore, understanding how callogenesis takes place is helpful to plant tissue culture, as well as to plant biotechnology and bioprocess engineering. The common herbaceous plant stinging nettle (Urtica dioica L.) is a species producing cellulosic fibres (the bast fibres) and a whole array of phytochemicals for pha

Ferroptosis is a novel form of regulated cell death characterized by iron-dependent lipid peroxidation, which is mediated by multi-pathway cascades involving dysregulated iron metabolism, polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) oxidation, and impaired antioxidant defense systems. This form of cell death is closely implicated in the pathophysiology of various human diseases, including cancer, neurological disorders, ischemia-reperfusion injury, renal damage, and hematological diseases. Recent studies have expanded the understanding of ferroptosis to plants, where it plays pivotal roles in respondin

It was demonstrated that salicylic acid (SA) not only binds to catalase from differentiated higher plants and plant cell suspension cultures but also to those of fungi and animals. SA bound specifically to iron-containing enzymes, such as catalase, aconitase, lipoxidase and peroxidase, while not to iron-free plant enzymes. On the grounds of these experiments, the claim is further challenged that SA is a signalling compound and second messenger in plants that activates plant defense-related genes through elevated H2O2 levels by specifically inhibiting catalase activity. SA may just function as
