Clinical profile, treatment patterns, and early outcomes of colorectal cancer at Kassala Police Hospital, Eastern Sudan: a 10-year retrospective cohort study.

In low-resource settings with limited access to multimodal care, colorectal cancer is characterized by delayed diagnosis and a high incidence of emergency presentation. Robust contemporary longitudinal data from Eastern Sudan are scarce. This is a retrospective cohort study recruiting all patients who underwent colonic or rectal resection for colorectal cancer between June 2013 and June 2023. Extracted data included demographic, clinical, operative, oncologic, and outcome variables. Fisher’s exact tests, χ² tests, t-tests and ANOVA were used for bivariate analysis. Independent predictors of ou

"Once You're Labeled a Drug User, You Might as Well Stay the F*** Home": Adverse Police Experiences Among People Who Inject Drugs.

BACKGROUND: Despite the growing relevance of rural areas in the overdose crisis, research on rural people who inject drugs and their experiences with law enforcement remains limited. This research examines how rural policing and stigma uniquely shape the lives of people who inject drugs. METHODS: Forty-one semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted with people who inject drugs in southern Illinois. For this analysis, we focused on participants who mentioned police in response to the question, "Have you ever been treated differently because you used drugs?" RESULTS: We identified t…

Technical-tactical behavior analysis of general duty police officers during non-compliant suspect apprehensions: A novel approach to establish minimum force requirements.

BACKGROUND: While effective apprehensions of non-compliant suspects are central to public safety, the minimal force needed to transition a suspect from standing to the ground, vital for apprehension success, has not been established. OBJECTIVE: To examine the technical-tactical behaviors of general duty police officers during simulated apprehensions and quantify the minimum force required to destabilize non-compliant suspects. METHODS: Task simulations conducted with 91 officers were analyzed to identify common grappling movements, strikes, control tactics, and changes in body posture. A sep…

Identification and quantification of Δ-9-tetrahydrocannabinol and the synthetic cannabinoid MDMB-4en-PINACA in edible products seized by United Kingdom police in 2024.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Cannabis edible products are increasingly being sold on the illicit market around the world. Use of these products, typically labelled as containing Δ-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), has been linked to adverse health effects, particularly amongst adolescents. Here, we aimed to conduct the first study to quantify the THC content of cannabis edibles seized by United Kingdom (UK) police forces. We also sought to identify and quantify other drugs present, perform a visual analysis of packaging designs and evaluate the effectiveness of a field-portable device for rapid drug ident…

'I'm not going to leave someone to die': carriage of naloxone by police in Scotland within a public health framework: a qualitative study of acceptability and experiences.

BACKGROUND: Scotland has one of the highest rates of drug-related deaths (DRDs) per capita in Europe, the majority of which involve opioids. Naloxone is a medication used to reverse opioid-related overdoses. In efforts to tackle escalating DRDs in many countries, naloxone is increasingly being provided to people who are likely first responders in overdose situations. This includes non-healthcare professionals, such as police officers. A pilot exercise to test the carriage and administration of naloxone by police officers was conducted in selected areas of Scotland between March and October 202…

BACKGROUND: Construction workers are 3-4 times more likely than other workers to die from accidents at work-however, in the developing world, the risks associated with construction work may be 6 times greater. India does not publish occupational injury statistics, and so little is known about construction workers injured. We aimed to use Indian police records to describe the epidemiology of construction site injuries in Delhi and to thus generate knowledge that may help to control the burden of injuries to construction workers in India and in other developing countries. METHODS: This was a cr…

A national train-the-trainer program to enhance police response to veterans with mental health issues: Primary officer and trainer outcomes and material dissemination.

Law enforcement officers (LEOs) may play the most important role in directing people in mental health crises into treatment versus incarceration. While most military veterans will never experience a crisis interaction with LEOs, they represent an important at-risk target group for whom to enhance LEO response. The evidence supporting LEO crisis training models includes important limitations that stem from jurisdiction-limited studies, and emphasize LEOs who volunteer for mental health training. The current study reports the primary outcomes of a national (U.S.) large-scale mandated train-the-t

Arrest discretion and training needs for interacting with people with substance use disorders: a qualitative secondary analysis among police recruits in Washington State.

BACKGROUND: Frequent interactions between law enforcement and individuals with substance use disorders carry significant public health implications. Pre-arrest diversion programs rely on officer discretion to redirect individuals toward a range of medical and social services rather than make an arrest. To inform more effective evidence-based training, this study examines how police recruits anticipate exercising this discretion and identifies their self-reported training needs for navigating encounters with this population. RESULTS: A qualitative thematic analysis of open-ended survey response…

This study aimed to develop a conceptual framework to identify key aspects for measuring the quality of care in police custody in the Netherlands. METHODS: A scoping review supplemented by expert consultations was conducted to gather information on health needs and quality of care in short-term police custody settings. Searches were performed across seven electronic data…

Examining Racial Differences in the Effects of the Brazilian State-Level Police Substance Use Prevention Program in Schools: a Cluster-Randomized Controlled Trial.

Adolescent alcohol and tobacco use are associated with various health risks, including cognitive and developmental impairments. Minority youth may face additional vulnerabilities, such as racism and discrimination, which contribute to stress and an increased risk of substance use. This study examined the effects of a school-based prevention program implemented by the Brazilian state-level police forces in schools, focusing on differences across racial groups. We analyzed data from two cluster-randomized controlled trials conducted in 2019 in public schools on the outskirts of São Paulo. The sa…

Comparison of the number of pedestrian and cyclist injuries captured in police data compared with health service utilisation data in Toronto, Canada 2016-2021.

INTRODUCTION: Pedestrian and cyclist injuries represent a preventable burden to Canadians. The primary objective of this study was to compare the number of police-reported collisions with emergency department (ED) visits and hospitalisations in Toronto, Canada. METHODS: Police-reported collisions were provided by Toronto Police Services (TPS). Data included the location of the collision, approximate victim age and whether the pedestrian or cyclist was killed or seriousl…

Emergency care to 'persons with confused behavior': Lived experiences of, and collaboration between, police and members of a mobile crisis team - A hermeneutic-phenomenological study.

BACKGROUND: Police officers and members of a mobile crisis team (MCT) are the two actors who respond to nuisance in Dutch society related to 'persons with confused behavior' and serious violent incidents. Their collaboration creates tension and dissatisfaction about roles and responsibilities. AIM: To explore the lived experiences of, and collaboration between, police officers and members of a MCT. METHODS: A hermeneutic-phenomenological study with unstructured in-depth interviews of eight police officers and eight members of a MCT. FINDINGS: The main findings in this study are that in the …

Workplace violence among female sex workers who use drugs in Vancouver, Canada: does client-targeted policing increase safety?

Workplace violence, by clients or predators, poses serious negative health consequences for sex workers. In 2013, the Vancouver (British Columbia), Canada Police Department changed their guidelines with the goal of increasing safety for sex workers by focusing law enforcement on clients and third parties, but not sex workers. We sought to examine the trends and correlates of workplace violence among female sex workers (FSW) before and after the guideline change, using data collected from prospective cohorts of persons who use illicit drugs in Vancouver, Canada. Among 259 FSW, 21.0% reported wo…
