Inner surface modification of polyurethane ureteral stents using plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition to improve the resistance to encrustation in a pig model.

PURPOSE: We developed a ureteral stent with a non-fouling inner surface using plasma micro-surface modification technology. This study aimed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of this stent in animal model. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ureteral stents were placed in five Yorkshire pigs. A bare stent was inserted on one side and an inner surface-modified stent was inserted on the other side. Two weeks after stenting, laparotomy was performed to harvest the ureteral stents. The changes in the inner surface were grossly evaluated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray sp

Inner surface modification of ureteral stent polyurethane tubes based by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition to reduce encrustation and biofilm formation.

Encrustation and/or biofilm formation in ureteral stents are major causes of obstruction and reduce the lifetime of a ureteral stent. In this study, the inner surfaces of polyurethane (PU) tubes (inner and outer diameters of 1.2 and 2.0 mm, respectively) were reformed with Ar, O2, and C2H2 gases using specialized plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition techniques for the first time. Then, the modified PU tubes were immersed in urine for 15 days, and the characteristics of the inner surfaces were analyzed. Depending on the modification procedure, the corresponding inner surface exhibited diff

Acid/reduction dual-sensitive amphiphilic graft polyurethane with folic acid and detachable poly(ethylene glycol) as anticancer drug delivery carrier.

In order to not only improve the stability of nanomicelles in blood circulation but also promote the cellular uptake in tumors and rapidly release the encapsulated drugs in tumor cells, a kind of acid/reduction dual-sensitive amphiphilic graft polyurethane with folic acid and detachable poly(ethylene glycol) (FA-PUSS-gimi-mPEG) was synthesized by grafting folic acid and monomethoxy poly(ethylene glycol) to the polyurethane side chain. FA-PUSS-gimi-mPEG could self-assemble in aqueous solution to form negatively charged nanomicelles, which endowed them good stability under normal physiological c

Vapor Sorption-Desorption Phenomena of HD and GB Simulants from Polyurethane Thin Films on Aluminum Oxide via a Quartz Crystal Microbalance.

Protection and decontamination of surfaces after exposure to chemical warfare agents (CWAs) are of considerable interest to the homeland defense and battlespace operation communities. In this work, polyurethane was spin-coated onto aluminum oxide quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) sensors. Polyurethane film thickness was varied by altering the concentration of the polymer/chloroform solution used for spin-coating. Atomic force microscopy confirmed the formation of smooth, homogeneous films on the QCM sensor surface. Aluminum oxide QCM sensors coated with polyurethane were exposed to saturated v

Scarless Healing of Injured Vocal Folds Using an Injectable Hyaluronic Acid-Waterborne Polyurethane Hybrid Hydrogel to Tune Inflammation and Collagen Deposition.

Vocal fold (VF) scarring results from injury to the unique layered structure and is one of the main reasons for long-lasting dysphonia. A minimally invasive procedure with injectable hydrogels is a promising method for therapy. However, current surgical techniques or standard injectable fillers do not yield satisfactory outcomes. In this work, an injectable hybrid hydrogel consisting of oxide hyaluronic acid and hydrazide-modified waterborne polyurethane emulsion was injected precisely into the injury site and cross-linked in situ by a dynamic hydrazone bond. The prepared hydrogel displays exc

A biodegradable block polyurethane nerve-guidance scaffold enhancing rapid vascularization and promoting reconstruction of transected sciatic nerve in Sprague-Dawley rats.

Reconstruction of peripheral nerve defects with tissue engineered nerve scaffolds is an exciting field of biomedical research and holds potential for clinical application. However, due to poor neovascularization after the implantation, nerve regeneration is still not satisfactory, especially for large nerve defects. These obstacles hinder the investigation of basic neurobiological principles and development of a wide range of treatments for peripheral nerve diseases. Herein, we designed an amphiphilic alternating block polyurethane (abbreviated as PU) copolymer-based nerve guidance scaffold, w

Balancing the rates of new bone formation and polymer degradation enhances healing of weight-bearing allograft/polyurethane composites in rabbit femoral defects.

There is a compelling clinical need for bone grafts with initial bone-like mechanical properties that actively remodel for repair of weight-bearing bone defects, such as fractures of the tibial plateau and vertebrae. However, there is a paucity of studies investigating remodeling of weight-bearing bone grafts in preclinical models, and consequently there is limited understanding of the mechanisms by which these grafts remodel in vivo. In this study, we investigated the effects of the rates of new bone formation, matrix resorption, and polymer degradation on healing of settable weight-bearing p

Assessment of PEO/PTMO multiblock copolymer/segmented polyurethane blends as coating materials for urinary catheters: in vitro bacterial adhesion and encrustation behavior.

The effective long-term use of indwelling urinary catheters has often been hindered by catheter-associated infection and encrustation. In this study, the suitability of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)-based multiblock copolymer/segmented polyurethane (SPU) blends as coating materials for the commercial urinary catheters was assessed by measuring swellability, bacterial adhesion, and encrustation behavior. When exposed to PBS (pH 7.4), the blends absorbed a significant amount of water, which was proportional to the copolymer content. It was demonstrated from bacterial adhesion tests that compared to

Polyurethane foam/spheroid culture system using human hepatoblastoma cell line (Hep G2) as a possible new hybrid artificial liver.

The risk of xenozoonosis infections poses the greatest obstacle against the clinical application of hybrid artificial liver support system (HALSS). Primary human hepatocytes are an ideal source for HALSS, but the shortage of human livers available for hepatocyte isolation limits this modality. To resolve this issue, we used human hepatocytes with replication capacity (fetal hepatocytes, Hep G2, and Huh 7) in a polyurethane foam (PUF)/spheroid culture system in vitro, and analyzed liver functions such as ammonia removal and albumin synthesis capacity; results were compared to those of porcine h

Vascugraft polyurethane arterial prosthesis as femoro-popliteal and femoro-peroneal bypasses in humans: pathological, structural and chemical analyses of four excised grafts.

Following positive results obtained in in vitro studies and in vivo implantations in animals, a clinical trial using the Vascugraft polyurethane arterial prosthesis as a below-knee substitute was undertaken in 15 patients. Eight grafts became occluded during the first year, and segments from four of them were explanted and made available for pathological, structural and chemical investigations. The implantation periods ranged from 21 to 358 days. Failures were associated with kinking (one case), possible anastomotic mismatch between the graft and the artery (one case), and poor run-off (two ca

Mechanical Properties and Microstructure of Bonded Joints and Hybrid Structures with a 3D-Printed Honeycomb Core Modified with an Epoxy Matrix Filled with Recycled Polyurethane Foam.

This article examines the reuse of waste polyurethane foam (PUF) as a material in line with circular economy principles. The main objective was to evaluate how crushed polyurethane filler of different bulk densities-35 kg·m-3 (PUF35), 60 kg·m-3 (PUF60), and their blends at 1-5 wt%-affects the mechanical behaviour and structural integrity of hybrid composite systems and bonded laminated joints. An epoxy resin matrix was combined with 3D-printed polylactide (PLA) honeycomb structures, with rectangular and hexagonal core geometries. Static tensile tests showed that the blended filler (PUF35/60) p

Experimental and machine learning-based investigation of ZnO-incorporated polyurethane/polyethylene glycol nanocomposite films for potential antibacterial urinary catheter film applications.

Catheter-related urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) remain a critical healthcare-associated complication, motivating the development of antibacterial polymeric materials for catheter applications. In this study, zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles prepared under two calcination conditions (designated as nominal <50 nm and nominal <100 nm size groups) were incorporated into polyurethane/polyethylene glycol (PU/PEG) films by solvent casting at loadings of 5, 10, 20, and 30 wt%. The materials were characterized using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), wa

The autoxidation of polyether-polyurethane open cell soft foam: An analytical aging method to reproducibly determine VOC emissions caused by thermo-oxidative degradation.

We present a new method for investigating the oxidation and emission behavior of air-permeable materials. Employing this method, a differentiated statement can be made about the extent to which critical volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, and acrolein are contained in the material as impurities or formed by thermo-oxidative degradation of the polymer matrix in the use phase. The parameters affecting methods of VOC analysis are reviewed and considered for the developed method. The molecular mechanisms of VOC formation are discussed. Toxicological implications o

Injectable citrate-based polyurethane-urea as a tug-of-war-inspired bioactive self-expansive and planar-fixing screw augmented bone-tendon healing.

Inspired by tug-of-war, a game-changing bone-tendon fixation paradigm was developed. Specifically, injectable citrate-based bioactive self-expansive and planar-fixing screw (iCSP-Scr) consisting of reactive isocyanate (NCO) terminalized citrate-based polyurethane, proanthocyanidin modified hydroxyapatite (HAp) and water (with/without porogen) was developed and administrated in the bone-tendon gap. Instead of the "point to point" tendon fixation by traditional interface screws, along with the moisture-induced crosslinking and expansion of iCSP-Scr within the confined space of the irregularly sh

Fabrication of electrospun thermoplastic polyurethane blended poly (l-lactide-co-e-caprolactone) microyarn scaffolds for engineering of female pelvic-floor tissue.

Potential scaffolds for repair of the female pelvic floor require new materials and fabrication by novel methods to improve cellular infiltration. An 'ideal' engineered scaffold for pelvic-floor tissue should mimic the three-dimensional (3D) network of the extracellular matrix (ECM), which possesses intricate macro- and nano-architecture. In this study, a series of blended poly(l-lactide-co-ecaprolactone) P(LLA-CL)/thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) microyarn/microfibrous scaffolds were produced with different weight ratios via dynamic liquid electrospinning and electrospinning. Both biopolymers

Response to Letter to the Editor Regarding "Prepectoral Breast Reconstruction with Polyurethane-Coated Implants: A 117-Patient Single-Center Study with Objective Cosmetic Evaluation".

We thank Ali for the thoughtful comments regarding our study. We clarify that the study was designed to evaluate polyurethane-coated implants in a real-world prepectoral reconstruction cohort rather than predefined subgroups. Variables highlighted in the Letter were included in the statistical analyses and were not independently associated with complications. We also believe that a substantial learning-curve effect is unlikely because both surgeons had extensive prior experience before initiation of the study cohort. We agree that larger prospective multicenter studies are warranted.Level of E
