Comparison of mark-resight methods to estimate abundance and rabies vaccination coverage of free-roaming dogs in two urban areas of south Bhutan.

In Bhutan, Capture-Neuter-Vaccinate-Release (CNVR) programs have been implemented to manage the dog population and control rabies, but no detailed evaluation has been done to assess their coverage and impact. We compared estimates of the dog population using three analytical methods: Lincoln-Petersen index, the Chapman estimate, and the logit-normal mixed effects model, and a varying number of count periods at different times of the day to recommend a protocol for applying the mark-resight framework to estimate free-roaming dog population abundance. We assessed the coverage of the CNVR program

Prevalence and population structure of lice (Phthiraptera) on the Indian Red Avadavat.

Prevalences of two phthirapteran species (an ischnoceran, Brueelia amandavae, and an amblyceran, Myrsidea amandava) on 130 Red Avadavats (Amandava amandava) were 36.2 and 20.8% in the district of Rampur, India, from September to December 2004. Sample mean abundances of the two species were 3.43 and 1.53, respectively. The frequency distribution patterns of both species were aggregated. The observed distribution conformed to the expected distribution of the negative binomial model, but only in the case of M. amandava. Adults dominated over nymphs in the overall adult-to-nymph ratio. Sex ratios

Species-specific environmental drivers of mosquito abundance in a coastal lagoon system of Florida.

Mosquito abundance is strongly influenced by environmental conditions, yet species-specific responses to weather and land-cover variables remain insufficiently quantified in operational mosquito control programs. This study integrates multi-year surveillance data (2021-2024) with environmental predictors to identify drivers of mosquito abundance in a coastal landscape in Indian River County, Florida, USA with analyses focused on Culex nigripalpus, Aedes taeniorhynchus, and Aedes albopictus. Species-specific generalized linear mixed-effects models with a negative binomial distribution were used

Accounting for variable detection functions in temporal abundance modeling via transfer learning.

Relative abundance, measured as the number of animals caught per unit of sampling effort (catch per unit effort, CPUE), is commonly used to monitor fish and wildlife populations, largely because sampling methods are cost-effective to implement. Modeling relative abundance from CPUE data, however, requires the assumption that the detection probability is constant across sampling events. This assumption is likely not valid, as the probability of detection often varies as a function of several factors, including the characteristics of individual animals and environmental conditions at the time of

Equity, isolation, and federal disaster recovery assistance: Geographic discrepancy in hurricane recovery.

The strength of a storm, geographic location of impact, and population density dictate different response and fiscal efforts. During the last 3 weeks of September 2022, three different ocean-based storms impacted three different locations in the United States (US), which were 5,600 miles (9,000 km) apart from each other. Established case study methodology was used to contrast the meteorological data of the measured strength at impact on US shores, population density, and post-storm recovery financial allocation from the federal government for these three storms. The hypothesis was that a storm…

Critical thresholds of adult patch density and spacing during coral fertilization.

Climate change and other anthropogenic stressors have severe impacts on the ecological functioning of marine ecosystems by causing widespread declines in population sizes and, for surviving individuals, limiting the capacity for population recovery through sexual reproduction. Ecological theory suggests that affected populations can suffer local extinction because of Allee effects, where reduced population densities prevent gamete encounters, resulting in reproductive failure. Without understanding the relationship between the density or spacing of spawning individuals and fertilization succes

The first comprehensive population size estimations for the highly endangered largest diving beetle Dytiscus latissimus in Europe.

Dytiscus latissimus (Coleoptera Dytiscidae) is an endangered diving beetle throughout its range. It is one of the two species of Dytiscidae listed in Annex II of the Habitats Directive, IUCN red list and in many national level legislations and therefore strictly protected. The conservation of endangered species first of all requires an assessment of their population size. Until now, a method has not been developed for estimating the size of D. latissimus populations. The article summarizes the results of two studies carried out independently in Germany and Latvia. Both studies were carried out

How heterogeneous is the dengue transmission profile in Brazil? A study in six Brazilian states.

Dengue is a vector-borne disease present in most tropical countries, infecting an average of 50 to 100 million people per year. Socioeconomic, demographic, and environmental factors directly influence the transmission cycle of the dengue virus (DENV). In Brazil, these factors vary between regions producing different profiles of dengue transmission and challenging the epidemiological surveillance of the disease. In this article, we aimed at classifying the profiles of dengue transmission in 1,823 Brazilian municipalities, covering different climates, from 2010 to 2019. Time series data of dengu

The concomitant effects of self-limiting insect releases and behavioural interference on patterns of coexistence and exclusion of competing mosquitoes.

Aedes aegypti is the dominant vector of dengue, a potentially fatal virus whose incidence has increased eightfold in the last two decades. As dengue has no widely available vaccine, vector control is key to reducing the global public health burden. A promising method is the release of self-limiting Ae. aegypti, which mate with wild Ae. aegypti and produce non-viable offspring. The resultant decrease in Ae. aegypti population size may impact coexistence with Ae. albopictus, another vector of dengue. A behavioural mechanism influencing coexistence between these species is reproductive interferen

Japanese quail classified by their permanence in proximity to a high or low density of conspecifics: a search for underpinning variables.

Test of sociality in poultry is mainly based on the bird's individual ability to make quick social discriminations. In recent years, a density-related permanence (DRP) test has been developed that enables us to classify young birds (while in groups) according to their individual permanence in proximity to either a high or low density of conspecifics (HD or LD, respectively). Thus, the result of the classification depends not only on the bird's individual response but also on the outcome of the social interactions within the whole group. The birds' performance in DRP was associated with underly

Role of environmental parameters on the density of intermediate host snails of human schistosoma during the year in the commune of Richard-Toll, Senegal.

The implementation and expansion of development projects (dams and irrigation schemes) in the Senegal River valley have led to a significant proliferation of snails. We conducted a one-year (2014) study project, monitoring their density in the commune of Richard Toll, to assess the role of environmental parameters on mollusc population dynamics. Four species involved in the transmission of human schistosomiasis were found: Bulinus globosus, B. truncatus, B. senegalensis, and Biomphalaria pfeifferi. Among the intermediate hosts, B. truncatus is the most abundant species, followed by B. globosus

Enhancing fish Underwater Visual Census to move forward assessment of fish assemblages: An application in three Mediterranean Marine Protected Areas.

Monitoring fish assemblages is needed to assess whether Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) are meeting their conservation and fisheries management goals, as it allows one to track the progress of recovery of exploited species and associated communities. Underwater Visual Census techniques (UVC) are used to monitor fish assemblages in MPAs. UVCs should be adapted to fish abundance, body-size and behaviour, which can strongly affect fish detectability. In Mediterranean subtidal habitats, however, UVC strip transects of one surface area (25x5 m2) are commonly used to survey the whole fish assemblage,

Validating activity indices from camera traps for commensal rodents and other wildlife in and around farm buildings.

BACKGROUND: Indices of rodent activity are used as indicators of population change during field evaluation of rodenticides. We investigated the potential for using camera traps to determine activity indices for commensal rodents living in and around farm buildings, and sought to compare these indices against previously calibrated survey methods. RESULTS: We recorded 41 263 images of 23 species, including Norway rats (Rattus norvegicus Berk.) and house mice (Mus musculus L.). We found a positive correlation between activity indices from camera traps and activity indices from a method (footprin

Comparison and Field Validation of Binomial Sampling Plans for Oligonychus perseae (Acari: Tetranychidae) on Hass Avocado in Southern California.

Oligonychus perseae Tuttle, Baker, & Abatiello is a foliar pest of 'Hass' avocados [Persea americana Miller (Lauraceae)]. The recommended action threshold is 50-100 motile mites per leaf, but this count range and other ecological factors associated with O. perseae infestations limit the application of enumerative sampling plans in the field. Consequently, a comprehensive modeling approach was implemented to compare the practical application of various binomial sampling models for decision-making of O. perseae in California. An initial set of sequential binomial sampling models were developed u

Sequential hypothesis testing with spatially correlated presence-absence data.

A pest management decision to initiate a control treatment depends upon an accurate estimate of mean pest density. Presence-absence sampling plans significantly reduce sampling efforts to make treatment decisions by using the proportion of infested leaves to estimate mean pest density in lieu of counting individual pests. The use of sequential hypothesis testing procedures can significantly reduce the number of samples required to make a treatment decision. Here we construct a mean-proportion relationship for Oligonychus perseae Tuttle, Baker, and Abatiello, a mite pest of avocados, from empir

Larval density dependence in Anopheles gambiae s.s., the major African vector of malaria.

Anopheles gambiae sensu stricto is the most important vector of malaria in Africa although relatively little is known about the density-dependent processes determining its population size. Mosquito larval density was manipulated under semi-natural conditions using artificial larval breeding sites placed in the field in coastal Kenya; two experiments were conducted: one manipulating the density of a single cohort of larvae across a range of densities and the other employing fewer densities but with the treatments crossed with four treatments manipulating predator access. In the first experiment

Sex-based differences in density-dependent sociality: an experiment with a gregarious ungulate.

For animals living in natural or semi-natural settings, empirical data on how sociality changes in response to increasing population density are few, especially with respect to true conspecific density and not group size. However, insight into this line of research may be far-reaching--from understanding density dependence in sexual selection to improving models of disease transmission. Using elk (Cervus elaphus Linnaeus) held in enclosures, we conducted sex-stratified experiments to test how the frequency of dyadic pairings (interaction rate) and their quality (duration) responded to manipula…

Utilization of various nitrogen, phosphorus, and selenium compounds by Cochlodinium polykrikoides.

The abilityof Cochlodinium polykrikoides to use various nitrogen, phosphorus, and selenium compounds as a nutrient source was examined in batch culture experiments to obtain biological information on the mechanism of C. polykrikoides bloom formation. C. polykrikoides grew using a variety of organic or inorganic nitrogen sources except for L-proline. Maximum yields of C. polykrikoides were obtained by gradually increasing ammonium from 5 to 20 microM, but the yield was inhibited by addition of more than 50 microM. Growth was observed in media containing various phosphorus sources, such as phosp
