Maintenance of serum immunoglobulin G antibodies to Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) nuclear antigen 2 in healthy individuals from different age groups in a Japanese population with a high childhood incidence of asymptomatic primary EBV infection.

Immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies to Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) nuclear antigens 2 and 1 (EBNA-2 and EBNA-1, respectively) were studied using sera from healthy individuals of a population with a high incidence of asymptomatic primary EBV infections during infancy or childhood in Japan. Two CHO-K1 cell lines expressing EBNA-2 and EBNA-1 were used for anticomplement and indirect immunofluorescence assays. The positivity rate for EBNA-2 IgG rose in the 1- to 2-year age group, increased and remained at a plateau ( approximately 45%) between 3 and 29 years of age (3- to 4-, 5- to 9-, 10- to 14-, and

Seasonal Patterns of Hospitalizations for Pediatric Acute Respiratory Diseases by Age Group and Sex in Alberta, Canada: A Population-Level Retrospective Cohort Study From 2010 to 2025.

After the near disappearance of pediatric acute respiratory disease (ARD) hospitalizations during the COVID-19 pandemic (2020-2021), during the late-pandemic (2022-2023), only the resurgence in bronchiolitis, including both age groups and sexes, exceeded seasonal autoregressive integrated moving average model reference ranges. Two full seasons post-pandemic (2023-2024, 2024-2025), pediatric ARD hospitalizations remained within SARIMA model reference ranges developed on pre-pandemic patterns.

Bloodstream infections in head and neck cancer patients after curative-intent radiotherapy: a population-based study from the Danish Head and Neck Cancer Group database.

BACKGROUND: Patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) undergoing radiotherapy (RT) or chemoradiation (CRT) may become immunocompromised. In this population-based study, we aimed to investigate the risk factors, microbiological aetiologies, prognosis and impact on early non-cancer mortality of bloodstream infections (BSIs) after RT/CRT. METHODS: Patients with HNSCC of the pharynx, larynx and oral cavity treated with curative-intent RT/CRT in Denmark between 2010 and 2017 and subsequent BSI episodes occurring within 18 months of RT/CRT initiation were identified in national re

Effect of age on human immunodeficiency virus type 1-induced changes in lymphocyte populations among persons with congenital clotting disorders. Transfusion Safety Study Group.

Children other than neonates infected with human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) have low rates of progression to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Through 1989, 5.3% of 95 infected hemophiliacs aged 5 to 13 years developed AIDS, compared with 20.3% of 364 aged greater than or equal to 25 years. We asked whether the HIV-1 impact on peripheral blood mononuclear cell subpopulations differed with age using pairwise comparisons of uninfected and infected male children and adult hemophiliacs. Infected children had lesser reductions of total lymphocytes than adults, but proportionatel

Evaluation of a CBT-Based Program for Mental Health in the General Population During the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Stepped-Care Approach Using a Chatbot and Digitized Group Intervention.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic exposed a substantial portion of society to multiple stressors, while access to mental health care was limited. To address this, we introduced a digital stepped-care program rooted in cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) principles, aiming to alleviate mental health distress among the general public seeking help. Methods: The program comprises a 4-week digital application using "Aury" the chatbot, followed by an optional 6-week online group session for those still symptomatic. A 4-week waiting period separated these steps. Participants entered based on self-iden

Effectiveness of negative pressure wound therapy in the prevention of surgical wound complications in the cesarean section at-risk population: a parallel group randomised multicentre trial-the CYGNUS protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Caesarean delivery is steadily becoming one of the more common surgical procedures in Australia with over 100 000 caesarean sections performed each year. Over the last 10 years in Australia, the caesarean section rate has increased from 28% in 2003 to 33% in 2013. On the international stage, the Australian caesarean delivery rates are higher than the average for the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, Australia ranked as 8 out of 33 and is second to the USA. Postoperative surgical site infections (SSIs) and wound complications are the most common and costly ev

Genotype data for 60 SNP genetic markers associated with eye, hair, skin color, ABO blood group, sex, core Y-chromosome haplogroups in Kazakh population.

OBJECTIVES: The collection of genotype data was conducted as an essential part of a pivotal research project with the goal of examining the genetic variability of skin, hair, and iris color among the Kazakh population. The data has practical application in the field of forensic DNA phenotyping (FDA). Due to the limited size of forensic databases from Central Asia (Kazakhstan), it is practically impossible to obtain an individual identification result based on forensic profiling of short tandem repeats (STRs). However, the pervasive use of the FDA necessitates validation of the currently employ

Study protocol for enhanced CJD surveillance in the 65+ years population group in Scotland: an observational neuropathological screening study of banked brain tissue donations for evidence of prion disease.

INTRODUCTION: Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) is a human prion disease that occurs in sporadic, genetic and acquired forms. Variant CJD (vCJD) is an acquired form first identified in 1996 in the UK. To date, 178 cases of vCJD have been reported in the UK, most of which have been associated with dietary exposure to the bovine spongiform encephalopathy agent. Most vCJD cases have a young age of onset, with a median age at death of 28 years. In the UK, suspected cases of vCJD are reported to the UK National Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease Research & Surveillance Unit (NCJDRSU). There is, however, a con
