Macroprolactinemia is a polymeric form of prolactin-release, causing mildly symptomatic clinical pictures. The former can be isolated or associated with other causes of hyperprolactinemia. The association with an empty sella syndrome is rare. We report a case of a female patient discovered with this association. It's about a female patient 47 years old, followed up since the age of 31 years for bilateral galactorrhea and a spaniomenorrhea. There has been no associated drug intake. Her exploration has showed a serum prolactin level of 635 mIU/L. Thyroid test results were normal T4 = 10,2ng/L an

BACKGROUND: Posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES) is a rare neurological disorder with complex physiopathological mechanisms that have not been fully understood. Early identification is of great prognostic significance, of which the symptoms and radiological abnormalities can be completely reversed. If the diagnosis and treatment are delayed, ischemia and massive infarction may be developed in some patients. Posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES) has been reported mainly in association with postpartum eclampsia, which have been rarely reported, while the association

BACKGROUND: Thyroid dysfunction and thyroid autoimmunity are prevalent among women of reproductive age and are associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes. Preconception or early pregnancy screening for thyroid dysfunction has been proposed but is not widely accepted. We conducted a systematic review of the literature on the clinical significance of thyroid dysfunction and thyroid autoimmunity before conception and in early pregnancy.
METHODS: Relevant studies were identified by searching Medline, EMBASE and the Cochrane Controlled Trials Register.
RESULTS: From a total of 14 208 primary sele

Iodine is essential for normal thyroid function, supporting healthy fetal and child development. The relevance between maternal iodine nutrition status and pregnancy outcomes remains controversial. The aim was to explore whether urinary iodine concentrations (UIC)/urinary creatinine (UCr) was associated with thyroid function and adverse pregnancy outcomes. This study was performed in the Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism of the First Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing Medical University. A total of 212 pregnant women were enrolled from May 2018 to November 2021, from the first visit until

OBJECTIVE: Differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) commonly occurs in women of child-bearing age and represents the second most frequent tumor diagnosed during pregnancy only behind breast cancer. It is possible that associated physiological changes could favor tumor development and growth. However, few data are available about the outcome of DTC related to pregnancy, leading to conflicting results.
METHODS: Among the study population, 340 patients with DTC <45 years old were retrospectively studied. Patients were divided into three groups according to the time of tumor diagnosis in respect of pr

BACKGROUND: Low maternal iodine intake disturbs the thyroid function of neonates transiently or permanently.
OBJECTIVE: To our knowledge, we conducted one of the first systematic reviews and meta-analyses aimed at exploring the association of neonatal thyrotropin concentrations and iodine status of mothers during pregnancy and early postpartum periods.
DESIGN: Data were collected through literature searches for studies published between 1969 and 2015 with the use of electronic databases. Mean or median maternal urinary iodine and neonatal thyrotropin concentrations, along with other relevant

Background: Active surveillance (AS) has emerged as an established management strategy for patients with low-risk papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (PTMC). However, prior studies have suggested accelerated tumor growth during pregnancy, which raises concerns about the suitability of AS for reproductive-age patients. This study evaluates the longitudinal impact of pregnancy on tumor dynamics and validates the safety of AS management in this population. Methods: From February 2020 to October 2024, a single-institution prospective AS cohort enrolled 260 female patients diagnosed with low-risk PTMC

BACKGROUND: Maternal selenium deficiency is hypothesized to contribute to risk of adverse outcomes including low birth weight and prematurity, possibly through its role as an antioxidant and/or in thyroid hormone function.
OBJECTIVES: We assessed relationships between maternal selenium concentrations during pregnancy with offspring outcomes including birth measurements, low birth weight (<2500 g), prematurity (<37 wk), and small for gestational age (birth weight <10th percentile for gestational age).
METHODS: This was a secondary analysis of the Women First Trial (NCT01883193), a randomized

BACKGROUND: The association between isolated maternal hypothyroxinemia (IMH) and adverse pregnancy outcomes is still controversial. This study aimed to evaluate the association between IMH during the first trimester and adverse pregnancy outcomes in southern Chinese women.
METHODS: This was a hospital-based, retrospective cohort study. The records of 7051 women, including 1337 IMH women and 5714 euthyroid women who had a singleton pregnancy and accepted routine prenatal service at the Third Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-Sen University from January 2015 to September 2018, were extracted from

Thyroid hormone (TH) plays essential roles in normal brain development mainly by regulating gene expression through binding to specific nuclear receptors which serve as transcription factors. Previous studies showed that perinatal deficiency of TH or impairment of its signaling severely affect brain development, especially the development of the γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) system, but cellular and molecular targets of the hormone are only partly uncovered. In the present study, we focused on the developing rat hippocampus which was confirmed to be one of the regions highly sensitive to TH statu

Thyroid hormones are critical for brain development, and numerous studies have reported that hypothyroidism in neonatal life results in long-lasting changes in activity, cognition, and social behavior. However, most rodent developmental hypothyroidism paradigms induce hypothyroidism in the dam as well, and these enduring behavioral impacts may be partly mediated by changes in the maternal care pups receive. The goals of this study were to determine whether postpartum hypothyroidism alters maternal care and whether the maternal behavior of the pups experiencing postnatal hypothyroidism is alter

Fragile X premutation carriers have 55-200 CGG repeats in the 5' untranslated region of the FMR1 gene. Women with this premutation face many physical and emotional challenges in their life. Approximately 20% of these women will develop fragile X-associated primary ovarian insufficiency (FXPOI). In addition, they suffer from increased rates of menstrual dysfunction, diminished ovarian reserve, reduction in age of menopause, infertility, dizygotic twinning, and risk of having an offspring with a premutation or full mutation. Consequent chronic hypoestrogenism may result in impaired bone health a

BACKGROUND: Hair loss is caused by a variety of hair growth disorders, each with its own pathogenetic mechanism.
METHODS: This review is based on pertinent articles retrieved by a selective search in PubMed, on the current German and European guidelines, and on the authors' clinical and scientific experience.
RESULTS: Excessive daily hair loss (effluvium) may be physiological, as in the postpartum state, or pathological, due for example to thyroid disturbances, drug effects, iron deficiency, or syphilis. Androgenetic alopecia generally manifests itself in women as diffuse thinning of the hai

This study was undertaken to determine the prevalence of radiologically detectable pituitary tumors among patients seen initially in a gynecology clinic for a complaint of secondary amenorrhea. In a group of 144 women with secondary amenorrhea of more than 6 months' duration, 13 had radiologic abnormalities of the sella turcica detectable with standard skull films without tomography. These gynecologic patients composed more than half of the women in the reproductive age group who were diagnosed at this medical center as having a pituitary tumor. Only one patient with oligomenorrhea or secondar

INTRODUCTION: Bile cast nephropathy (BCN) is a rare and often overlooked cause of acute kidney injury (AKI), usually seen in the context of severe hyperbilirubinemia. It results from the deposition of bile pigments and bile casts in renal tubules, specifically distal and collector tubules, leading to obstruction and direct tubular toxicity.
CASE DESCRIPTION: We describe the case of 49-year-old male who presented with severe jaundice and oliguric AKI. With the gradual resolution of liver dysfunction, the patient's kidney function also improved. However, during the recovery phase, the patient d

Congenital hypothyroidism (CH) can lead to irreversible central nervous system (CNS) damage. However, the pathogenesis of the developmental brain disorders caused by CH has not been completely elucidated. ARPC5 and CRMP2 are closely associated with neurite outgrowth in brain development. Thus, the aim of the present study was to determine whether CRMP2B and ARPC5 expression is altered in the developing cerebral cortex of rats with CH. Control rats and rats with hypothyroidism were sacrificed at birth and at 15 days postpartum. We performed qRT-PCR to detect differences in the crmp2B and arpc5

This review summarizes studies of sleep and other biological rhythms in menopausal women with major depression compared with healthy control subjects. Where feasible, we focused on studies in women who met DSM-IV (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition) criteria for a major depressive episode (MDE) compared with matched normal control subjects and the Staging System for Reproductive Aging in Women (STRAW) criteria. The aim was to review supporting evidence for the hypothesis that a disruption of the normal temporal relationship between sleep and other biological

Bipolar disorder, a disease with significant morbidity and mortality, continues to present diagnostic and clinical challenges. Lifetime prevalence of bipolar I disorder has been estimated at 1.3%, with an equal distribution between males and females. Recognition of the illness may take years, but most patients are diagnosed before the age of 30. The role of genetic influences in bipolar disease is supported by family studies and high concordance rates among monozygotic twins. Current speculation proposes a likely interaction between genetic predisposition and environmental influences, includin
