Editorial: Decoding endurance performance: from theory to practice.

Endurance performance results from a complex interaction of physiological, biomechanical, psychological, and perceptual factors. Despite decades of research, transforming theoretical models into effective, individualized strategies for athletes remains a key challenge. This Research Topic, Decoding Endurance Performance: From Theory to Practice, brings together interdisciplinary studies that advance our understanding of how runners prepare, adapt, and perform in real-world conditions.

[Interest of the adapted physical activities for the staff of the penitentiary administration].

The poor state of health of some prisoners, the tensions and violence that can exist in prisons lead the administration's staff to work in a sometimes difficult context. The regular practice of adapted physical activities appears to be a particularly opportune course of action for the agents concerned: it would bring them physical and psychological benefits in their professional exercise.

Using tDCS to facilitate motor learning in speech production: The role of timing.

There exists debate regarding the extent to which transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) can affect or enhance human behavior. Here, we examined a previously unexplored domain: speech motor learning. We investigated whether speech motor learning in unimpaired participants can be enhanced using a single-session tDCS experiment, and investigated whether the timing of tDCS relative to a behavioral task affected performance. Participants (N = 80) performed a twenty minute learning task with nonwords containing non-native consonant clusters (e.g., GDEEVOO), and were assigned to groups recei

Transfer effects across contextual and linguistic boundaries: evidence from poor readers.

We report two experiments that are consistent with two hypotheses about poor, nonfluent readers: (1) fluency gains in text reading skill transfer across contextual and linguistic boundaries and (2) these fluency gains enable higher-order comprehension operations to function in the processing of text. We conclude that unlike the fluent reader, the nonfluent reader does not completely integrate the surface characteristics (words) of the text and the message of the text. Word-level representations remain free to support transfer across various processing episodes. Thus, a variety of reading exper

Choice autonomy and memory for spatial locations in six-year-old children.

Six-year-old children were presented with 12 identically labelled locations in a room and required to search non-redundantly for the six that contained rewards. On each day they could commit Across-Trial Memory (ATM) errors by visiting non-rewarded locations, or Within-Trial Memory (WTM) errors by revisiting locations previously visited that day. Groups were trained for nine days, either walking or pushed in a wheelchair, and with or without freedom of choice. They were then tested, walking with freedom of choice. Performance of the task improved significantly across training days in groups al

Preparation process facilitation of a motor task through imagery practice with adolescents who have mental retardation.

The use of imagery practice to facilitate the preparation of adolescents with mild mental retardation to perform a motor task was explored. Thirty-two subjects with mental retardation and an equal number of subjects without retardation performed a response-type task that included reaction time (RT) and movement time (MT) components. Catch trials were used to manipulate the preparation levels of several experimental groups. Results suggest that with marked preparation decrements, imagery practice facilitated the execution of the RT component. Under certain conditions imagery practice also helpe

What proportion of initially prescribed antidepressants is still being prescribed chronically after 5 years in general practice? A longitudinal cohort analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Antidepressant prescribing almost doubled in the Netherlands between 1996 and 2012, which could be accounted for by longer continuation after the first prescription. This might be problematic given a growing concern of large-scale antidepressant dependence. We aimed to assess the extent and determinants of chronic antidepressant prescribing among patient aged 18 years and older. We hypothesise a relatively large prevalence of chronic (>2 years) prescription. DESIGN: A longitudinal observational study based on routinely registered prescription data from general practice. SETTING:

Descriptive analysis of interns' basic psychological needs, burnout and empathy in the COVID-19 pandemic in Ireland.

BACKGROUND: The transition from medical student to doctor is recognised as challenging. Interns beginning their first clinical practice during the COVID-19 pandemic faced unprecedented uncertainty with unknown potential consequences for psychological well-being and the ability to practise empathetically. OBJECTIVES: This study investigated the effect of beginning the practice of medicine during the pandemic on the psychological needs, burnout and empathy of intern doctors. DESIGN: A mixed-methods, sequential cross-sectional study design. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: The national cohort of inte

Intimate partner violence: psychological and verbal abuse during pregnancy.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To examine the association between sociodemographic, pregnancy-related variables and psychological and verbal intimate partner abuse, as well as to determine which of these variables are predictors of psychological and verbal intimate partner abuse during pregnancy. BACKGROUND: Intimate partner violence is a significant health issue, with severe implications to both mother and foetus. However, much of the research to date focuses on the outcomes of physical abuse. This article addresses the dearth in the literature by examining the association between sociodemographic, pr

Training for Change: Developing Clinical Debriefing Champions in a Maternity Unit.

BACKGROUND: Clinical debriefing (CD) is a structured reflective conversation that supports experiential learning, enhances teamwork and contributes to patient safety. Despite established evidence for its benefits, implementation of CD within clinical environments remains challenging, with cultural barriers frequently cited as problematic. As part of a wider programme to embed CD within a busy maternity unit, a 1-day course in CD facilitation was delivered to an interprofessional group to develop debriefing skills and empower a group of staff to commit to CD practice. APPROACH: Course design w

The effects of Reiki practice on breast cancer patients: a systematic review.

PURPOSE: Breast cancer and its treatments cause multifaceted symptoms in women, affecting their physical, psychological, and emotional well-being. Complementary practices such as Reiki are increasingly used to support symptom management, particularly during chemotherapy. This systematic review aims to evaluate the effects of Reiki practice on improving symptoms in breast cancer patients within the framework of Martha E. Rogers' "Science of Unitary Human Beings." METHOD: This study was conducted as a systematic review in accordance with the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. A comprehensive literature se

Training medical students as peer simulated patients in undergraduate medical education: a narrative review and implementation framework.

Standardized patients (SPs) are a core modality in undergraduate medical education for teaching and assessing communication, history-taking, and clinical reasoning through simulated encounters and objective structured clinical examinations. Yet, scaling SP provision can be limited by financial cost, the availability of trained actors, and the faculty workload required for recruitment, training, and quality assurance (QA). A peer simulated patient (PSP) model, also described as "students as patients" or student standardized-patients model, trains senior medical students to portray SPs roles for

From skin clearance to psychological wellbeing: real-world outcomes of biologic therapy in psoriasis.

BACKGROUND: Psoriasis impacts psychological and quality-of-life (QoL). While biologic therapies demonstrated robust efficacy in reducing skin lesions, their broader psychosocial impact remains underexplored in real-world settings. This ambispective observational cohort study evaluated clinical, psychological, and health-related QoL (HRQoL) outcomes of biologic therapy in patients with moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis treated in routine dermatological practice. METHODS: A total of 133 patients undergoing biologic therapy at a referral center in Northern Italy were assessed. Baseline data (T

[Learning Evidence-Based Practice - Multi-Perspective Competence Development using the Example of Generalised Anxiety Disorder].

Within the framework of the evidence-based practice model of the American Psychological Association (APA, 2006), psychotherapeutic core competences are mostly formulated transdiagnostically and transtheoretically, but do not exclude the systematic consideration of symptom-specific aspects. This article provides an exemplary case study of a person suffering from a generalized anxiety disorder to illustrate how evidence-based practice can be implemented. Multi-perspective competence development can be stimulated in training through the following therapeutic areas: (1) through broad assessment an

No evidence of practice effects on the phase adjustment task.

The Phase Adjustment Task (PAT) has been described as one of the most promising new methods for assessing cardiac interoceptive accuracy. However, the suitability of this method for longitudinal research remains underexplored. In particular, it remains unclear whether performance on this measure changes with repeated testing in the absence of feedback. To explore potential practice/disengagement effects, we pooled data from all participants who had completed the PAT on two occasions within a ~7-day period (N = 73). Results revealed no evidence of practice/disengagement effects on the PAT. Thes

Supporting comprehension: The advantages of multiple-choice over true-false practice tests.

While work on improving comprehension has primarily focused on open-ended generative activities, closed-ended practice tests using inference-type questions may also benefit understanding from text. Four experiments were designed to investigate how practice tests, specifically in multiple-choice and true-false formats, may support comprehension. Experiments 1 and 2 compared the two practice test formats to rereading. Both formats improved performance on a final essay test in Experiment 1, but in Experiment 2, only multiple-choice practice enhanced performance on a short-answer (SA) test. Experi

New ACR EULAR guidelines for systemic sclerosis classification.

The American College of Rheumatology and European League Against Rheumatism classification criteria for systemic sclerosis are a significant advancement in the field. This article describes the innovative, rigorous, criteria development strategy that was used. The new criteria build upon previous criteria by incorporating important elements (proximal scleroderma, sclerodactyly, digital pits, pulmonary fibrosis, Raynaud's phenomenon, and scleroderma specific autoantibodies). The new criteria add emphasis to the vasculopathic manifestations, and include the early manifestation of puffy fingers.

Queer challenges to evidence-based practice.

This paper aims to queer evidence-based practice by troubling the concepts of evidence, knowledge and mental illness. The evidence-based narrative that emerged within biomedicine has dominated health care. The biomedical notion of 'evidence' has been critiqued extensively and is seen as exclusive and limiting, and even though the social constructionist paradigm attempts to challenge the authority of biomedicine to legitimate what constitutes acceptable evidence or knowledge for those experiencing mental illness, biomedical notions of evidence appear to remain relatively intact. Queer theory of

Engaging suffering: towards a mindful re-visioning of family therapy practice.

The myth of problem-free living is easily identifiable in Western culture through its childhood fairy tales and modern love stories. Even if inadvertently, the field of mental health perpetuates this myth with the very concept of "mental health," which implies a state without suffering. Using mindfulness, Buddhists assume an alternative stance towards suffering: rather than eliminate it, they compassionately engage it. This article explores the potentials of mindfulness as an alternative approach to suffering within the context of marriage and family therapy. Family therapists can integrate mi
