Effects of hemorrhage on regional blood flow distribution in dogs and primates.

The effects of hemorrhage on arterial pressure, blood flows, and resistances in the coronary, mesenteric, renal, and iliac beds of healthy, conscious dogs and intact, tranquilized baboons were studied. Mild nonhypotensive hemorrhage (14+/-2 ml/kg) increased heart rate and mesenteric and iliac resistances slightly but significantly, and decreased renal resistance (-13+/-2%). Moderate hypotensive hemorrhage, 26+/-2 ml/kg, reduced mean arterial pressure (-23+/-2 mm Hg) and blood flows to the mesenteric (-56+/-3%), iliac (-58+/-5%), and coronary (-39+/-4%) vascular beds, and increased heart rate (

Mineral sources in natural habitats for a leaf-eating primate.

Minerals are essential components of animal nutrition, playing a crucial role in health, reproduction, and survival. Studies show that mineral intake varies by species, habitat, and season. This study evaluates the mineral composition of food consumed by black howler monkeys (Alouatta pigra), an endangered primate in southeastern Mexico, considering differences among habitats (fragmented vs. conserved), strata (terrestrial vs. arboreal), seasons (rainy, dry, and Nortes), and food types. Leaves, fruits, and lianas (N = 84) were analyzed to estimate intake of key minerals (Ca, P, Mg, and K) in a

Origin and functional impact of early nonlinearities in primate retina.

Receptive fields provide a concise description of the stimulus selectivity of visual neurons. But this stimulus selectivity is neither static nor linear, and these nonlinear effects are not well captured by standard linear or pseudo-linear receptive field models. At the same time, receptive field models incorporating nonlinear effects are largely empirical, and are not easily interpreted in terms of underlying cellular and synaptic mechanisms. Here we show that two nonlinear mechanisms in the primate outer retina shape neural responses and that these contribute significantly to responses to na

Neural representation of action symbols in primate frontal cortex.

A hallmark of intelligence is proficiency in solving new problems, including those that substantially differ from previously seen problems. Problem solving in turn depends on the goal-directed generation of novel ideas and behaviours1, which has been proposed to involve internal representations of discrete units (or symbols) that can be recombined into numerous possible composite representations1-7. Although this view has been influential in cognitive-level explanations of behaviour, definitive evidence for a neuronal substrate of symbols has remained elusive. Here we identify a neural populat

The deadliest primate: Contest competition and the evolution of human males.

Many human sex differences can be explained by positing an evolutionary past in which males used force or threat against competitors to win mates. We review phenotypic, phylogenetic, archaeological, paleontological, genetic, and other evidence that this form of sexual selection-contest competition-played an important role in shaping men's behaviors, including physical aggression and displays, and anatomical traits, including skeletal dimensions, muscle mass, facial hair, and voices. Contest competition is not mutually exclusive with other putative evolutionary causes such as sexual division of

Follicle Identification in Primate Ovaries Via Machine Learning†.

Studies of ovarian health and aging rely on estimates of the ovarian reserve, i.e. the number of healthy ovarian follicles. We present a machine learning pipeline to classify preantral ovarian follicles in histology images from nonhuman primates. Ovarian tissue from 11 monkeys, were fixed, sectioned, stained, and imaged. A total of 7770 preantral follicles were manually annotated in 18 histology section images using a standardized protocol, with annotations reviewed by an expert. Using a transfer learning approach, we retrained a ResNet34 convolutional neural network to classify individual fol…

Primate-specific regulation of the human glycosphingolipid gatekeeper UGCG.

Glycosphingolipids are essential membrane components that organize lipid microdomains and orchestrate cellular signalling, differentiation and neuronal function1-4. In humans, these functions arise from a repertoire of several hundred glycosphingolipid species generated through stepwise glycan elaboration5,6. Entry into this network is controlled by a single committed reaction catalysed by UDP-glucose ceramide glucosyltransferase (UGCG), the gatekeeper that dictates the scale and composition of glycosphingolipid diversity. Despite its biological and therapeutic importance7,8, its mechanism and

Diversity and Feature Selectivity of Primate Retinal Ganglion Cells.

The primate retina transmits visual information to the brain through parallel pathways carried by diverse retinal ganglion cell (RGC) types, each of which encodes specific features in the visual environment. These parallel channels provide input to a variety of brain regions to support both conscious and reflexive visual functions. Although the midget, parasol, and small bistratified pathways have dominated classical models of primate vision, accumulating evidence points to a broader diversity of wide-field RGC types whose functions are less well understood. Recent breakthroughs in single-cell

Biodistribution of AAV-TT and AAV9 in the Nonhuman Primate Brain.

The adeno-associated virus (AAV) capsid variant known as "true type" (AAV-TT) is a capsid with enhanced central nervous system tropism and efficient retrograde transport across brain circuits. This property enables AAV-TT to transduce neurons in multiple regions projecting to the site of injection, as previously shown in rodent and sheep models. Such spreading offers the potential for broad therapeutic vector distribution to functionally connected brain areas via a single intraparenchymal administration. To assess the clinical potential of AAV-TT, we delivered a green fluorescent protein (GFP)

Bridging cotyledon histopathology and perfusion in healthy primate pregnancy.

INTRODUCTION: Healthy and diseased placentae alike often display some degree of histopathology. However, quantitative techniques to characterize common placental lesions and their relationship to local maternal hemodynamics in healthy pregnancy are currently limited. METHODS: Seven pregnant macaques with healthy fetoplacental biometrics were recruited for study. Placentae were imaged by MRI at three time points across mid-to late-gestation to quantify volume, blood flow, and perfusion of maternal blood across pregnancy. Near term, we collected placental cotyledons, imaged hematoxylin/eosin-st

Inflammatory neuropathy in mouse and primate models of colorectal cancer.

Colorectal cancer survivors are at increased risk of developing neurological issues, particularly peripheral neuropathy and chronic pain. Although pre-existing neuropathy is a risk factor for chronic pain, tumor-induced neuropathy has not been firmly established in pre-clinical models. Consistent with clinical observations, we show that mice with colorectal cancer develop peripheral neuropathy, which was associated with subtle locomotor deficits, without overt hypersensitivity. We detected widespread differences in pro-inflammatory cytokines and lipid metabolites in peripheral nerves from tumo

Characterization of pritumumab in murine models and primate safety study.

Pritumumab is a human IgG1 kappa antibody that targets ecto-domain vimentin (EDV) which is overexpressed in several malignant tumors including glioblastomas. To understand preclinical biological activity and safety of pritumumab derived from Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells, we evaluated tumor targeting ability, brain-tumor barrier permeability, growth inhibition, and primate safety studies. In-vivo and ex-vivo imaging studies demonstrate pritumumab to cross the blood brain/blood tumor barrier and an 89Zr-labeled pritumumab immunoconjugate showed the antibody specifically targeted tumor cells

A spontaneous nonhuman primate model of inherited retinal degeneration.

Inherited retinal degenerations (IRDs) are important causes of progressive, irreversible blindness. Hereditary macular diseases, in particular, are significant in their effect on the specialized, central cone photoreceptor-rich macula responsible for high resolution vision. Autosomal dominant Best vitelliform macular dystrophy (BVMD), caused by variants in the BEST1 gene, is one of the most common inherited macular dystrophies. Gene therapies have emerged as promising treatments for IRDs, but a lack of suitable animal models has hindered progress both in treatments and in understanding the mec

Observations of anisotropic paramagnetic and diamagnetic susceptibility in the primate brain.

Bulk magnetic susceptibility in the brain white matter is known to be diamagnetic and anisotropic due to the ordered myelin lipids. While paramagnetic iron is widely present in the brain, it is typically not considered to contribute to anisotropy. Using experimental MRI and computational techniques, this study explores the competing contribution of diamagnetic and paramagnetic substances to the susceptibility anisotropy. Multi-echo gradient-echo imaging and diffusion-weighted imaging data from a paraformaldehyde-fixed post-mortem chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes verus) brain was analyzed. A computa

Modularity and integration of the neural arch and vertebral centrum in primates.

The vertebral column consists of multiple homologous elements that have specialized within and between taxa and serve important functions in positional support and as protection for the central nervous system. The study of modularity and integration provides new insights into the evolution of complex structures such as the vertebral column. Patterns of modularity and integration may reflect underlying genetic-developmental patterns and facilitate evolution. Previous studies have identified mixed modularity patterns within and between elements across mammals generally, within primates and carni…

Primate Behavior and the Importance of Comparative Studies in Biological Anthropology.

Biological anthropology seeks to understand humans from an evolutionary perspective. Namely, what makes humans different from other animals, … ity studies of behavior that allow for appropriate comparisons within and across species; (2) using primates as a "gateway clade" and expanding our research to any relevant taxa; and (3) careful attention to the ethical implications of making comparisons to other primates given racist tropes and a history of eugenics.
