Burnout syndrome: a preliminary study of a population of nurses in italian prisons.

INTRODUCTION: Burnout is a set of psychological manifestations ("emotional exhaustion", "depersonalization" and reduced "personal accomplishment") that principally affects healthcare professionals. OBJECTIVES: Analysis of the level of burnout among twelve nurses who work in two Italian prisons. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The Maslach Burnout Inventory was administered. In order to explore possible correlations between the three dimensions of the Maslach Burnout Inventory and such variables as age, years of service in general and years of service in prisons, multiple regression based on the ordinar…

Prisons, Older People, and Age-Friendly Cities and Communities: Towards an Inclusive Approach.

This original and ground-breaking interdisciplinary article brings together perspectives from gerontology, criminology, penology, and social policy to explore critically the nature and consequences of the lack of visibility of prisons, prisoners, and ex-prisoners within global research, policy and practice on age-friendly cities and communities (AFCC), at a time when increasing numbers of people are ageing in prison settings in many countries. In addition, the COVID-19 pandemic continues to pose challenges in the contexts both of older peoples' lives, wellbeing, and health, and also within pri…

OUD Care Service Improvement with Prolonged-release Buprenorphine in Prisons: Cost Estimation Analysis.

BACKGROUND: In prisons in England, integrated treatment for opioid use disorder (OUD) is accessible and effective, commonly based on daily supervised consumption of methadone. Treatment limitations (inadequate dosing, nonengagement with care, stigma, diversion and bullying) are noted. Flexible dose, injectable prolonged-release buprenorphine (PRB) which removes the need for daily dispensing and supervision is suggested for prisoner care. This work aimed to predict the difference in costs of current standard of care vs partial introduction of PRB. METHODS: A predictive model of compared costs …

Custodial, corporal, capital punishment? Death in St. Wenceslas and Pankrac prisons 1827-1926.

Prisons were places where prisoners lost a part of their freedom and sometimes also health or even life. If they returned to normal life, re-socialization was not the worst problem. For many of them, it was challenging to find a way how to live on despite permanent health issues that led to decreased workability or even invalidity. In infectious illnesses like tuberculosis or typhoid fever, a released prisoner acted as a source of infection for their relatives, possibly causing worst health issues than he underwent himself. The cruel reality of historical penology can be demonstrated through d…

HCV micro-elimination in two prisons in Milan, Italy: A model of care.

People in prison represent a high-risk population for HCV infection control. With the advent of new direct antiviral agents (DAAs) HCV micro-elimination in prison setting became a feasible strategy. We assessed the impact of an intervention for HCV testing and treatment in 2017 and 2018 in a jail (San Vittore,SV) and a prison for sentenced individuals (Opera,OP). A dedicated protocol was applied and implemented over the two years. We collected data on demographics, HCV testing and treatment on all inmates present on 31 October 2017 and 2018. In the two facilities, there were 2,366 and 2,369 in

UK news media representations of smoking, smoking policies and tobacco bans in prisons.

BACKGROUND: Prisoner smoking rates remain high, resulting in secondhand smoke exposures for prison staff and non-smoker prisoners. Several jurisdictions have introduced prison smoking bans with little evidence of resulting disorder. Successful implementation of such bans requires staff support. As news media representations of health and other issues shape public views and as prison smoking bans are being introduced in the UK, we conducted content analysis of UK news media to explore representations of smoking in prisons and smoke-free prisons. METHODS: We searched 64 national and local newsp…

Systemic limitations in the delivery of mental health care in prisons in England.

There is a high prevalence of mental health need in prisons, much of which is currently unmet. Although considerable research has identified and described this mental health need, there has been limited research focussed on reviewing the delivery of mental health care in prisons. This study uses content analysis to review 36 unannounced prison inspection reports in England to establish whether mental health care was provided to an appropriate standard, and whether it is equivalent to services that are provided in the wider community. The analysis identified four main categories, each of which …

Prevalence of Mental Health problems in sentenced men in prisons from Andalucía (Spain).

OBJECTIVES: To estimate the prevalence of different mental health problems in men serving prison sentences in Andalusia. METHODS: Descriptive, cross-sectional study of a random sample of 472 men interned in two prisons located in Andalusia. We collected socio-demographic and general criminal and penitentiary data, and we identified mental health problems with two validated instruments for epidemiological research in mental health: the SCID-I interview to diagnose Axis 1 disorders of the DSM-IV and the self-applied questionnaire IPDE to estimate personality disorders. We analyzed the data (pro…

Systematic review of health and behavioural outcomes of smoking cessation interventions in prisons.

OBJECTIVE: We conducted a systematic review to examine the impact of smoking cessation interventions, including smoking bans, on prisoners and prison staff. DATA SOURCES: We systematically searched health and criminal justice databases for relevant studies. Search strings were used to combine terms related to smoking cessation interventions with terms related to incarceration. We used forward and backward snowballing to capture additional studies. STUDY SELECTION: Studies were included if: they were published between 1 January 1994 and 23 May 2016; the population was incarcerated adults and/

Homelessness in a national sample of incarcerated veterans in state and federal prisons.

The Veterans Health Administration (VHA) has been increasing efforts to reach out to assist incarcerated veterans. While previous studies have shown strong associations between incarceration and homelessness, few studies have examined distinctive characteristics of incarcerated homeless and non-homeless veterans. National administrative data on 30,348 incarcerated veterans served by the Health Care for Re-entry Veterans (HCRV) program were analyzed. Incarcerated veterans were classified into four groups based on their history of past homelessness: not homeless, transiently homeless, episodical

Cost-effectiveness of interferon-gamma release assay for entry tuberculosis screening in prisons.

The incidence of active tuberculosis (TB) and latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) in inmates and prison staff is higher than that in the ge … tiveness was compared. The QFT-alone strategy was the most cost-effective for entry TB screening in prisons in developed countries. Cost-effectiveness was not sensitive to the rates of BCG vaccination, LTBI, TB, HIV infection and multidrug-resistant TB. Entry TB screening using an IGRA in prisons should be considered on the basis of its cost-effectiveness …

Controlling tuberculosis in prisons against confinement conditions: a lost case? Experience from Cameroon.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) is recognised as a major public health problem in the prisons of sub-Saharan Africa. In Cameroon, the main prisons have created diagnostic and treatment units linked to the National Tuberculosis Programme (NTP). OBJECTIVE: To assess the effectiveness of routine TB control activities in a prison population by determining the prevalence of undetected pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB). METHODS: In 2009, a PTB case-finding survey was undertaken at the Central Prison of Yaounde (CPY), Cameroon. All prisoners with cough of ≥1 week's duration were screened by sputum smear m…

OBJECTIVE: We estimated the prevalence of Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae infection among newly arriving inmates at 6 California prisons. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study in 1999, urine specimens collected from 698 men aged 18 to 25 years and 572 women aged 18 years or older were tested at intake for C trachomatis and N gonorrhoeae using ligase chain reaction. An analysis of demographic and arrest-related correlates of C trachomatis and N gonorrhoeae infection was performed. RESULTS: The overall C trachomatis prevalence was 9.9% (95% CI=7.8%, 12.3%) among men aged 18 to…
