We present one case with pancreatitis that synchronized with manifestations of ulcerative colitis, in which an improvement of stricture of the main pancreatic duct was observed. A 27-year-old man, having a history of nonalcoholic acute pancreatitis, complained of anal bleeding and pain in the epigastric region. The treatment for pancreatitis relieved the pain and decreased the serum levels of pancreatic enzymes to within normal ranges. Cell counts and measurements of mucosal architecture were made on rectal biopsies from nine patients with total colitis, eight with left sided colitis, 15 with distal colitis, and 11 with proctitis. PURPOSE: Radiation proctitis is a common complication following external beam radiation therapy and brachytherapy for prostate cancer. While 95% percent of radiation induced proctitis is temporary and self-limiting, up to 5% of patients experience toxicities that are refractory to conservative management. Hyperbaric oxygen has a well-defined role in treating chronic wounds, osteomyelitis, hemorrhagic cystitis and necrotizing fasciitis. We reviewed our experience with hyperbaric oxygen therapy for radiation induced proctitis in patients undergoing radiation treatment for prostate cancer.

PURPOSE: To better define the efficacy and safety of argon plasma coagulation (APC), specifically for brachytherapy-related proctitis, we reviewed the clinical course of 7 patients treated for persistent rectal bleeding. Approximately 2-10% of prostate cancer patients treated with 125I or 103Pd brachytherapy will develop radiation proctitis. The optimum treatment for patients with persistent bleeding is unclear from the paucity of available data.
