At the Forefront: Social Workers' Role in Psilocybin Treatment for Depression and Substance Misuse.

This article underscores the critical role of social workers in harnessing the potential therapeutic benefits of psilocybin for treating major depressive disorder (MDD) and substance use disorder (SUD). Contemporary treatments for MDD often have side effects, and the success rate for SUD treatments remains low. The pervasiveness of MDD, combined with the challenges in treating SUD, highlights a need for innovative treatments. This article provides an overview of the resurgence of literature over the past two decades that illuminates the therapeutic promise of psilocybin for mental health treat

COVID-19 host genetic risk study conducted at community pharmacies: Implications for public health, research and pharmacists' scope of practice.

Community pharmacists serve a large, diverse population of patients, resulting in the potential to utilize community pharmacies as recruitment sites for clinical research. Beyond traditional roles as one of the most accessible health care professionals in the US healthcare system, pharmacists have played a major role in the response to the COVID-19 pandemic, administering hundreds of thousands of vaccines and tests. However, less emphasis is placed on the ability to leverage community pharmacies as research-focused partners for clinical studies. In this study, we demonstrate the feasibility an

Community pharmacists' provision of sexual and reproductive health services: A cross-sectional study in Alberta, Canada.

BACKGROUND: In many countries, pharmacists' scope of practice enables the delivery of professional pharmacy services related to sexual and reproductive health (SRH). Studies exploring practices and perspectives regarding a wide range of SRH professional pharmacy services and the extent to which pharmacists are involved in prescribing or administering injections are limited. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to explore SRH professional pharmacy services provided by pharmacists, evaluate pharmacists' self-reported confidence in providing SRH education and determine preferences for additional trainin

Incidence of occupational contact dermatitis in healthcare workers: a systematic review.

Healthcare workers (HCWs) can be considered at an increased risk of developing occupational contact dermatitis (OCD) due to repetitive hand washing with soaps and disinfectants and extended use of gloves for many hours during the day. The aim of this study was to summarize the incidence of OCD in HCWs. We searched the databases PubMed/MEDLINE (1980-present), EMBASE (1980-present) and Cochrane Library (1992-present) through May 2020 using the search term 'incidence of contact dermatitis in HCWs' according to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA) guidelines.

The Relationship between Customers and Community Pharmacies during the COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2) Pandemic: A Survey from Italy.

Community pharmacies are among the most easily accessible health services. Considering the major impact of COVID-19 in social terms, the purpose was to analyse the evolution of the relationship between community pharmacies and customers during the pandemic in 2020 and to understand which strategies should be implemented in the future. The data have been collected from May to December 2020. Pharmacists administered a questionnaire, also available online, to all customers that agreed to participate. The total number of respondents was 502. The results obtained confirm a generally high level of s

Raloxifene-induced osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) with no exposure to bisphosphonates: clinical and radiographic findings.

Raloxifene is a selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM) that is used to manage osteoporosis in women. Because of its tissue selectivity, raloxifene has fewer side effects than estrogen therapy; however, raloxifene-associated osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ) has recently been reported. While most of the reported cases were treated with antiresorptive therapy in addition to raloxifene, ONJ can also occur with the isolated use of raloxifene. This report presents a case where there was no prior exposure to bisphosphonates, in which the patient incidentally had florid cemento-osseous dysplasia

Dental RECUR Randomized Trial to Prevent Caries Recurrence in Children.

The purpose of this study was to determine the efficacy of a dental nurse-delivered intervention-the Dental RECUR Brief Negotiated Interview for Oral Health (DR-BNI)-in reducing the recurrence of dental caries in children who have a primary tooth extracted. It was based on a 2-arm multicenter randomized controlled trial with blinded outcome assessment. Participants were 5- to 7-y-old children (n = 241) scheduled to have primary teeth extracted in 12 UK centers. Test intervention parents (n = 119) received DR-BNI led by trained dental nurses. DR-BNI is a 30-min structured conversation informed

The Drug and Alcohol Clinical Advisory Service: A model of telephone-delivered addiction specialist support.

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: People with substance use problems frequently present to mainstream health services with a variety of health issues. However, many medical and allied health-care providers feel under-equipped to respond to this population. We describe the Drug and Alcohol Clinical Advisory Service (DACAS), an established 24/7 telephone-delivered model of addiction specialist consultation, and examine recent call data to identify drug use issues for which health practitioners seek support. DESIGN AND METHODS: Methods of DACAS service provision and call data collection are provided. A ret

Appropriate Titration of Basal Insulin in Type 2 Diabetes and the Potential Role of the Pharmacist.

A substantial proportion of patients with suboptimal control of their type 2 diabetes experience delays in treatment intensification. Additionally, patients often experience overuse of basal insulin, commonly referred to as "over-basalization," whereby basal insulin continues to be uptitrated in order to meet targets, when addition of a mealtime bolus insulin dose may be a more appropriate option. In order to overcome these challenges, there is a need to develop the capacity of allied healthcare professionals to provide appropriate support to these patients, such as during initiation or titrat

Advocating for the Child: The Role of Pediatric Psychology for Children With Cleft Lip and/or Palate.

Children with cleft lip and/or palate (CL ± P) undergo several surgical procedures from birth to adulthood to achieve functional, aesthetic, and psychosocial normalcy. Although children with CL ± P have normal physical development apart from their CL ± P, they face increased risk for emotional, social, behavioral, and academic concerns. In this article, we discuss how the psychology team helps support children with CL ± P and their families. We also explore how the child's overall functioning is evaluated through interview and assessment tools. Throughout, we validate the need for specialized

The roles and influence of actors in the uptake of evidence: the case of malaria treatment policy change in Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Uganda changed its malaria treatment policy in response to evidence of resistance to commonly used antimalarials. The use of evidence in policy development--also referred to as knowledge translation (KT)--is crucial, especially in resource-limited settings. However, KT processes occur amidst a complex web of stakeholder interactions. Stakeholder involvement in evidence generation and in KT activities is essential. In the present study, we explored how stakeholders impacted the uptake of evidence in the malaria treatment policy change in Uganda. METHODS: We employed a qualitative c
