Inpatient verbal aggression: content, targets and patient characteristics.

Verbally aggressive behaviour on psychiatric wards is more common than physical violence and can have distressing consequences for the staff and patients who are subjected to it. Previous research has tended to examine incidents of verbal aggression in little detail, instead combining different types of aggressive behaviour into a single measure. This study recruited 522 adult psychiatric inpatients from 84 acute wards. Data were collected from nursing and medical records for the first 2 weeks of admission. Incidents of verbal aggression were categorized and associations with patient character

European Association of Neurosurgical Societies. Third European Lecture. Naples, 23 April, 1982. Some aspects of personality of the neurosurgeon.

Possibility of personality shaping: Hippokrates said: "Balance is essential to health, and imbalance creates, or is, disease." Psychological balance is essential for developing our personality and professional ability. However, growth is also dependent on a sound community spirit in the profession. Hindu psychology lists joy, success, duty and understanding as personality-shaping forces which significantly-and positively-affect our actions from childhood until old age. Of these, success and duty are the most relevant during a neurosurgeon's creative period. The majority of our operations are n

A Community Hospital NICU Developmental Care Partner Program: Feasibility and Association With Decreased Nurse Burnout Without Increased Infant Infection Rates.

BACKGROUND: Volunteers can provide staff-directed sensory inputs to infants hospitalized in the NICU, but research on volunteer programs is limited. PURPOSE: To evaluate the feasibility of a developmental care partner (DCP) program in a level III NICU and determine its relationship with provider burnout and infant infection rates. METHODS: DCPs were trained to provide sensory input to infants, based on the behavioral cues observed by the occupational therapists and nursing staff, in medically stable infants. Feasibility was assessed by documenting the process of training and utilizing volunt

Exploring factors influencing occupational therapists' perception of patients' rehabilitation potential after acquired brain injury.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Clinical practice guidelines advocate for early involvement of rehabilitation professionals in screening acquired brain injury patients' rehabilitation needs and determining the required rehabilitation services. Little is yet known about the nature of occupational therapists' role in this context. This exploratory study sought to identify factors influencing occupational therapists' perception of acquired brain injury patients' rehabilitation potential for inpatient rehabilitation. METHODS: A qualitative approach was used to analyse data from a focus group involving 12 occupat

Reliability of psychiatric and psychological diagnoses of mental retardation severity: judgments under naturally occurring conditions.

The reliability of diagnoses of mental retardation severity was examined through the comparison of psychiatric and psychological case reports found in client records. For a sample of 126 dually diagnosed clients, overall chance-corrected agreement was .47, ranging from .38 (for diagnoses of moderate mental retardation) to .55 (for diagnoses of borderline mental retardation). Results showed that the analysis of naturally occurring variation in diagnostic practices (including variability in professional judgment and assessment methods) may offer a more realistic appraisal of the reliability of d

Multiple personality: an issue for forensic psychiatry.

The formulation of Multiple Personality (MP) as a distinctive entity by DSM-III while helpful clinically requires, at best, very rigid evaluatory criteria based on independent verification when used as a defense in a Court of Law. The use of the set of eight criteria developed by specialists are helpful guidelines. A case of MP disorder discovered under hypnosis by a psychiatrist and later on vehemently denied by the patient became the object of legal action as part of a malpractice suit. While some well-known experts consulted during treatment believed that she was a MP, the expert witnesses

The effect of professional skills training on patient-centredness and confidence in communicating with patients.

OBJECTIVES: The effect of introducing professional skills training on students' patient-centred attitudes and perceptions of ability to communicate was examined. The professional skills training included weekly training in communication skills, ethics and law, and clinical skills. METHODS: Consecutive cohorts of medical students receiving a traditional pre-clinical curriculum (n = 199) and a new curriculum including professional skills training (n = 255) were compared. Students completed the Doctor-Patient Scale to assess patient-centred attitudes and an 11-item scale to assess confidence in

Changes during the course of the psychotherapeutic relationship.

Changes in the therapeutic relationship over time were explored using the Therapy Session Report for 30 patients and six therapists at an out-patient clinic. 11 patients dropped out after the third session, while the continuing group consisted of 19 patients for whom sessions ranged from 5 to 33. Significant differences on both patient and therapist evaluations were found between the dropout and continuing groups, there being high agreement from inception to termination. Results emphasized the importance of early establishment of a collaborative relationship in short-term psychotherapy.

Family-Centred Care Interventions in Adult Intensive Care Units: A Scoping Review of Experiences, Barriers and Facilitators.

BACKGROUND: Family-centred care (FCC) is recognized as a holistic approach to improve patient outcomes, reduce psychological symptoms in family caregivers, and enhance communication between families and healthcare professionals. However, existing research has primarily focused on clinical outcomes or isolated FCC components, with limited attention given to the experiences of those involved in its implementation. AIMS: This study aimed to synthesize the experiences of family caregivers and healthcare professionals with FCC interventions and to identify the barriers and facilitators to the impl

Assisted Dying Makes Us Think Differently About Care.

Assisted dying (AD) is increasingly available as a legal end-of-life option in wealthy nations. Literature on AD considers its operation and the experience of clinicians, people receiving AD, and their loved ones. It is inward-looking. The nature of AD suggests it focuses less on the technical aspects of care and more on its humanity. Accordingly, AD offers lessons for healthcare more broadly-specifically, the importance of patient- and family-centred care, respect for patient wishes, and relational care. LIVED EXPERIENCE: JH is a family member of a person who received assisted dying. The vign

Affirmation to fulfillment: Therapy experiences of transgender and nonbinary clients over time.

Transgender and nonbinary (TNB) people experience marginalization due to gender minority stigma. Research has demonstrated that many TNB people seek therapy to manage these stressors as well as more general distress. Given psychology's complex history with TNB care, it is of particular importance to facilitate therapy experiences for TNB clients that are fulfilling and affirming. In this longitudinal study, we investigated TNB peoples' perceptions of how their therapists responded to ongoing contextual factors related to systems of power (e.g., current events, political climate) in TNB peoples

Effectiveness of Balint group interventions for physician burnout: a systematic review and meta-analysis protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Physician burnout is a global crisis compromising healthcare sustainability and patient safety. Balint groups, a structured case-based discussion intervention focusing on the doctor-patient relationship, are increasingly used to mitigate this distress. However, existing evidence regarding their efficacy remains fragmented. This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to evaluate the effectiveness of Balint groups in reducing physician burnout and improving secondary psychological outcomes, while also assessing implementation characteristics. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: We will search

The interembodiment of healing: Holistic transformations in neurological rehabilitation and care.

While disability literature has largely moved away from rehabilitation settings, critiquing its philosophy as reifying normative ableism, many communities still request accessible treatment options. Those with paralysis (on account of spinal cord injury and traumatic brain injury) are especially surrounded by constant messaging centered on hopes of a cure, with activity-based therapy, a relatively new therapy modality, being situated as providing maximum hope for patients and clients. This paper draws on 10 months of ethnographic research with paralysis patients, their caregivers, and rehabili
