A simplified approach in the management of osteochondroma of the mandibular condyle.

Osteochondroma of condyle is an exophytic lesion that arises from the cortex of bone and is capped with cartilage. It is one of the most com … toward the right side and progressive facial asymmetry for the past 1 year. There was an asymmetric prognathism of the lower jaw with ipsilateral open bite and contralateral crossbite. The patient was planned for surgery under general anesthesia. The tumor was dissected from its soft-tissue attachments, and then, complete excision of the tumor was done. Histo …

A longitudinal evaluation of craniofacial growth in a patient with Kabuki make-up syndrome: a case report.

The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the craniofacial growth of a patient diagnosed with Kabuki make-up syndrome (KMS). Craniofacial growth was assessed by analysing lateral cephalometric radiographs with an interval of 12-15 months. They were taken from 6 years 9 months to 14 years 2 months. Angular and linear measurement analyses of the craniofacial complex showed a hypoplastic maxilla and a constricted maxillary basal arch width. The mandibular size was relatively large and had started to increase from 13 years 4 months. This resulted in a prognathic face caused by forward grow

Craniofacial morphology in patients with multiple congenitally missing permanent teeth.

The purpose of this study was to examine the association between the number of congenitally missing permanent teeth, excluding third molars, and the craniofacial morphology. The sample comprised 118 children with five or more congenitally missing teeth. Twenty-seven reference points were digitized from lateral cephalometric radiographs and 13 angular measurements of craniofacial morphology were calculated. After an initial analysis, the sample was divided into two subsamples, one with 5-12 missing teeth and the other with 13-21 missing teeth. Within each subsample there was no significant asso

Is the mandible intrinsically different in Apert and Crouzon syndromes?

Relative mandibular prognathism is an observed finding in Apert and Crouzon syndromes. This imbalance in the facial profile is generally attributed to the diminished growth of the maxilla, thereby increasing the disparity between maxilla and mandible with increasing age. What is not known is whether the mandible is, indeed, normal. Previous work by Kreiborg with Crouzon syndrome led to the conclusion that the mandible, although somewhat smaller, grew in a "normal" pattern. Our own observations, which used a greater variety of mandibular measurements on patients with both Apert and Crouzon synd…

Is the "Habsburg jaw" related to inbreeding?

Background: The "Habsburg jaw" has long been associated with inbreeding due to the high prevalence of consanguineous marriages in the Habsburg dynasty. However, it is thought that mandibular prognathism (MP) is under the influence of a dominant major gene.Aim: To investigate the relationship between the "Habsburg jaw" and the pedigree-based inbreeding coefficient (F) as a relative measure of genome homozygosity.Subjects and methods: The degree of MP and maxillary deficiency (MD) of 15 members of the Habsburg dynasty was quantified through the clinical analysis of 18 dysmorphic features diagnos…

Tongue reduction for macroglossia in Beckwith Wiedemann syndrome: review and application of new technique.

Beckwith Wiedemann syndrome (BWS) is a rare, congenital overgrowth disorder that is characterized by macroglossia, anterior abdominal wall defects, visceromegaly, gigantism, and neonatal hypoglycaemia. Macroglossia may contribute to anterior open bite malocclusion with prognathism, speech articulation disturbances, drooling and the perception of intellectual disability. It was the purpose of this study to review a series of BWS patients who underwent surgical reduction of the tongue by a modified technique with respect to aesthetic and functional outcomes. Seven BWS patients, age 6 months to 2…

Cleidocranial dysplasia: case report of three siblings.

BACKGROUND: A family case report of cleidocranial dysplasia (CCD) with varied manifestations from father to three siblings is presented. CCD ( MIM # 119600) is a rare autosomal dominant skeletal dysplasia caused by CBAF1 gene ( OMIM 600211) with a wide range of variability. In all the cases generalized dysplasia in bone, prolonged retention of primary teeth and delayed eruption of permanent teeth were evident. Interestingly, there were no supernumerary teeth present. There was mandibular prognathism which was intercepted by occipital chin cup therapy. AIMS AND OBJECTIVE: To present the clinic…

New brittle bone disorder: report of a family with six affected individuals.

We report on a family in which four females and two males in three generations had a previously undescribed brittle bone disorder that was dominantly transmitted through a maternal line. The cardinal manifestations of the disorder comprised dolichocephaly with frontal bossing, hypoplasia of the midface, postpubertal prognathism, micromelic short stature, coarse trabeculae of the entire skeleton, and bone fragility of variable degrees. Mild spondylar modification and iliac hypoplasia were other hallmarks that were recognized in childhood. The proband, a 19-year-old male, was most severely affec…

First description of co-occurrence of 49,XXXXY and X-linked Cornelia de Lange syndrome: case report.

49,XXXXY is a rare sex chromosome aneuploidy with an estimated incidence of 1 in 85,000-100,000 newborn males. Individuals with this syndrome exhibit variable clinical manifestations, typically including developmental delay, intellectual deficits, hypogonadism, and distinctive facial features such as ocular hypertelorism, epicanthic folds, a flat nasal bridge, prognathism, folded-over ears, and a short neck. Unlike patients with Klinefelter syndrome, they are often short in stature. Cornelia de Lange syndrome (CdLS) is an unrelated rare disorder with an incidence of 1 in 10,000-30,000 live bir…
