Highly biocompatible behaviour and slow degradation of a LDH (layered double hydroxide)-coating on implants in the middle ear of rabbits.

Chronic inflammation can irreversibly damage components of the ossicular chain which may lead to sound conduction deafness. The replacement of impaired ossicles with prostheses does not reduce the risk of bacterial infections which may lead to loss of function of the implant and consequently to additional damage of the connected structures such as inner ear, meninges and brain. Therefore, implants that could do both, reconstruct the sound conduction and in addition provide antibacterial protection are of high interest for ear surgery. Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) are promising novel biomat

Impact of local and systemic factors on additional peri-implant bone loss.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the impact of local and systemic factors on additional peri-implant bone loss. METHOD AND MATERIALS: From a total of 253 patients, 193 were selected (126 women) and restored with 722 implants, in place for at least 1 year. Patients had previously attended the supportive periodontal/peri-implant therapy program at the Department of Implant Dentistry at the Federal University of Santa Catarina, Brazil. The study was divided according to physiologic (PBL < 2 mm) or additional bone loss (ABL >= 2 mm) evaluated from the time of prosthesis placement to the reassessment visit. D

Melatonin Increases Bone Mass around the Prostheses of OVX Rats by Ameliorating Mitochondrial Oxidative Stress via the SIRT3/SOD2 Signaling Pathway.

Bone mass loss around prostheses is a major cause of implant failure, especially in postmenopausal osteoporosis patients. In osteoporosis, excess oxidative stress largely contributed abnormal bone remodeling. Melatonin, which is synthesized from the pineal gland, promotes osteoblast differentiation and bone formation and has effectively been used to combat oxidative stress. Thus, we determined if melatonin can inhibit oxidative stress to promote osteogenesis and improve bone mass around prostheses in osteoporosis. In this study, we observed that received melatonin at 50 mg/kg body weight signi

Comparison between Crown-to-Root Ratio and Crown-to-Implant Ratio in Natural Teeth.

BACKGROUND: In locations with poor bone quality and significant masticatory pressures, bone resorption after tooth loss inhibits implant implantation. This condition requires augmentation or short implants. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty low-bone-height patients had single-tooth implants and were observed for 12 months. Radiographs examined crown height, crown-to-implant ratio, and marginal bone loss at baseline, six months, and 12 months. The correlation between crown height and marginal bone loss was examined. RESULTS: The average crown-to-implant ratio was 1.8:1 in the study. Implant crown

Interimplant femoral fractures.

The number of hip or knee arthroplasties, and internal fixations of the proximal and distal femur, is increasing in proportion to the growing and ageing population, whose life expectancy is lengthening. Thus, fractures of the femur between proximal and distal implants, although rare, are becoming more frequent. Women over the age of 70, with fragile bones and whose ends of the two implants are close to each other ("kissing implants") are particularly vulnerable to them. Reliable and reproducible fracture classifications exist when it comes to 2 prostheses, but they are less well established in

Three-dimensional finite element analysis of tooth and implant-supported telescopic prosthesis using zirconia, PEKK, and cobalt chromium crowns.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate the biomechanical behavior and stress distribution of tooth–implant-supported telescopic prostheses using different combinations of zirconia, polyetherketoneketone (PEKK), and cobalt–chromium (Co-Cr) materials for primary and secondary crowns by means of three-dimensional finite element analysis (3D FEA). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A three-dimensional finite element model representing a mandibular arch restored with a telescopic overdenture supported by two canines and two implants in the molar region was constructed. Nine prosthetic configurations were ana

Effect of PMMA particles and movement on an implant interface in a canine model.

The pathogenesis of aseptic loosening of total joint prostheses is not clearly understood. Two features are associated with loosened prostheses, namely, particulate debris and movement of the implant. While numerous studies have evaluated the cellular response to particulate biomaterials, few have investigated the influence of movement of the implant on the biological response to particles. Our aim was therefore to test the hypothesis that excessive mechanical stimulation of the periprosthetic tissues induces an inflammatory response and that the addition of particulate biomaterials intensifie

Reconstruction after Pelvic Bone Massive Resection: Evolution and Actuality of 3D-Printing Technology.

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: Pelvic reconstructions after massive bone resections are among the most challenging practices in orthopedic surgery. Whether the bone gap results after a trauma, a tumor resection, or it is due to a prosthetic revision, it is mandatory to reconstruct pelvic bone continuity and rebuild the functional thread that connects spine and hip joint. Several different approaches have been described in literature through the decades to achieve those goals. MATERIAL AND METHODS: To this date, 3D-printed implants represent one of the most promising surgical technologies in orthopedic

Enucleation with primary implant insertion for treatment of recalcitrant endophthalmitis and panophthalmitis.

PURPOSE: A prevalent conception exists that a two-stage operation (i.e., primary enucleation or evisceration with delayed secondary orbital implant insertion) is necessary when enucleation is required for recalcitrant endophthalmitis or panophthalmitis. The purpose of this study was to assess the utility of single-stage enucleation and primary reconstruction in this setting. METHODS: In a retrospective interventional case series, 22 consecutive patients with advanced endophthalmitis or panophthalmitis refractory to prior medical treatment underwent enucleation and primary implant placement by

[Establishing the differential indication for anatomical and reversed shoulder endoprostheses in rheumatoid arthritis].

BACKGROUND: In addition to joint destruction, there is often also a loss of rotator cuff function in rheumatism patients. Thus, joint replacement alone using an anatomical prosthesis is unable to achieve satisfactory results. A half-linked inverse prosthesis, on the other hand, achieves improved function even in the presence of non-functioning rotator cuffs. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Of 157 shoulder prostheses that were followed up, 21 had been implanted in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. An anatomical endoprosthesis was implanted in 15 cases and an inversed endoprosthesis in six cases (avera

Three-Dimensional FEA Analysis of the Stress Distribution on Titanium and Graphene Frameworks Supported by 3 or 6-Implant Models.

Titanium is the main component of dental implants. It is also routinely used as a framework material for implant-supported full-arch prostheses due to its low density, biocompatibility, and other mechanical properties. Remarkable mechanical properties such as lesser mass density and higher young's modulus of graphene have gained popularity among scientists, improving the properties of biomedical implants. Thus, our study aimed to compare the outcome through the von Mises stresses generated on All-on-6 and All-on-3 implant models, as well as on the framework, and evaluate the effect of stress p

Short implants (6mm) vs. vertical bone augmentation and standard-length implants (≥9mm) in atrophic posterior mandibles: a 5-year retrospective study.

This retrospective study compared the 5-year clinical and radiographic outcomes of short implants (6 mm) (short group), and standard-length implants (≥9mm) placed after a vertical augmentation with autologous bone blocks (augmentation group), supporting partial fixed prostheses in the posterior mandible. Forty-five partially edentulous patients were enrolled in the study and evaluated after 5 years: 22 (51 implants) in the augmentation group and 23 (46 implants) in the short group. Eight surgical complications occurred in the augmentation group versus none in the short group (P=0.003). One sho

Plaque score change as an indicator for periimplant health in periodontal patients with immediately restored dental implants.

BACKGROUND: Patients with a history of periodontitis might have a higher risk for implant failure as compared with periodontally healthy subjects. The aim of the present study was to look into this risk factor by examining the association between plaque scores, probing depths (PD), and bleeding on probing (BOP) around teeth and immediately restored dental implants up to 1 year after implant surgery. METHODS: Patients with partial edentulism, diagnosed with and previously treated for generalized chronic periodontitis, received dental implants, abutments, and cemented provisional prostheses up

Bilateral total hip replacement: periprosthetic pseudotumor collections are more prevalent in metal-on-metal implants compared to non-metal-on-metal ones.

BACKGROUND: Metal-on-metal (MoM) hip prostheses were shown to have high failure rates including the formation of periprosthetic cystic masses called periprosthetic pseudotumor collections (PPCs). PURPOSE: To compare MRI prevalence and size of PPCs in patients after bilateral total-hip-replacement (THR) in which at least one hip was replaced by a MoM prosthesis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: All sequential MRI examinations of patients with bilateral THR in which at least one is MoM (2010-2013) were retrospectively evaluated. Implant stability and peri-implant parameters in free vascularized iliac graft transplantation patients: report of three ameloblastoma cases.

BACKGROUND: Ameloblastoma, a benign but locally aggressive tumor, accounts for 9% to 11% of all odontogenic tumors. Radical procedures, including resection, are performed. To restore functions after resection, free vascularized iliac grafts followed by a dental implant-supported prosthesis are used as a successful treatment option. The aim of this case report is to evaluate the peri-implant clinical status and stability of dental implants placed in patients with advanced-stage mandibular ameloblastomas. METHODS: Examinations of three patients revealed extensive ameloblastomas, and hemimandibu

[Prosthetic rehabilitation in the head and neck region].

Implant-retained craniofacial prostheses (or epitheses) made of silicone are state of the art for prosthetic rehabilitation of facial defects. With the modern extraoral implant systems, prostheses may be securely anchored to the bone regardless of size and location of the defect. Prerequisite for successful implantation is the classical atraumatic surgical technique with avoidance of any thermal trauma to the bone. The treatment intention may be a temporary measure, a rescue procedure after failed (re)construction, or a definitive treatment option. This article gives an overview of the strateg
