Protein C and S, vitamin K-dependent proteins, are blood coagulation inhibitors. Their deficiency causes systemic thrombosis. A 35-year-old man who developed superior mesenteric venous thrombosis and portal vein thrombosis showed markedly decreased protein C and S levels. The therapeutic modality of this thrombosis associated with protein C and S deficiency is still debated. We treated this patient with systemic anticoagulation and long term total parenteral nutrition without surgical intervention.

We studied benign breast diseases using polyclonal anti S-100 protein and monoclonal anti a-subunit or beta-subunit of S-100 protein antibodies. The antibody gave positive staining in most of the cytoplasms and nuclei of the myoepithelial cells of normal breast tissues, gynecomastia, fibroadenoma, intraductal papilloma and mastopathy. However, immunohistochemical methods using the monoclonal antibodies for them did not reveal positive staining in the myoepithelial cells.

S-100 protein and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) were studied in human salivary gland tissues and human cultured submandibular gland epithelial cells. Immunohistochemically, ductal cells in normal salivary gland tissues were positive for S-100 protein and GFAP, but myoepithelial cells were uniformly negative. In eukaryotes, frataxin deficiency (FXN) causes severe phenotypes including loss of iron-sulfur (Fe-S) cluster protein activity, accumulation of mitochondrial iron and leads to the neurodegenerative disease Friedreich's ataxia. A 27-year-old pregnant woman with pulmonary embolism was scheduled for cesarean section. She received anticoagulant therapy with continuous infusion of heparin and prophylactic placement of an inferior vena cava (IVC) filter. Heparin was discontinued 7 hours before operation. Spinal anesthesia using hyperbaric bupivacaine 12 mg was performed and the operation was completed uneventfully. She was given a diagnosis of protein S deficiency after discharge. Preoperative anticoagulant therapy and placement of IVC filter may be effective in preventing new pulmonary embolism.

UNLABELLED: A 6-y-old boy presented with generalized, bruise-like swelling of both legs. Three weeks later, he developed purpura fulminans in one of the affected feet.
