(Ultra-)inflammation or adaptation? Comparison of different ultramarathon distances and their effect on the immune system.

BACKGROUND: Ultra-endurance sports like running over several hours or days exhibit great physical, psychological and metabolic strain on the respective athlete. Although the impact of ultramarathon running on the inflammatory/immunological system gained interest in the last years, there is no study that examined the effect of different running distances on inflammatory/immune system responses. METHODS: During a non-stop ultramarathon, blood and saliva samples were collected before (Pre) and after the race (Post), and analyzed for changes in blood cell variables (immune cells leukocytes/thromb

Stigmatisation of people experiencing gambling-related harms: a vignette study of the predictors of desire for social distance.

INTRODUCTION: Stigma is associated with psychological distress and can act as a barrier to help-seeking for people who experience gambling harms. While research into intersectional stigma within this population is scarce, this may be exacerbated for those from multiply-marginalised groups. METHOD: This study used an online survey with 'vignette' design to capture attitudes of 3,567 adults in Great Britain towards hypothetical individuals experiencing gambling harms alongside a variety of other potentially stigmatised characteristics (minority ethnicity, LGBTQ status; low-income status; chroni

Sexuality, sexual well being, and intimacy during COVID-19 pandemic: An advocacy perspective.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS)-CoV-2, has emerged as a global public health threat. The implications are much beyond just health crisis, and it has long-lasting psychosocial and economic implications. Although the psychological offshoots such as depression, anxiety, posttraumatic stress, and sleep disturbances are being studied in-depth, there is a dearth of literature on the sexual well-being and sexual practices during this pandemic. Considering the physical distancing; travel restrictions; the high human-human transmission rate; m

Different stage, different performance: the protective strategy of role play on emotional health in sex work.

This paper uses Arlie Hochschild's (1983) concept of emotion management and "surface" and "deep acting" to explore how sex workers separate and distance themselves from their public role. Experiences of stigmatisation prevail among sex workers and how stigma is resisted or managed has an impact on their health. In-depth interviews were carried out between August 2006 and April 2007 with 58 sex workers in five cities in New Zealand following decriminalisation of the sex industry. Most participants drew on ideas of professionalism in sustaining a psychological distance between their private and …

Strategic responses to intimate partner violence against women in Spain: a national study in primary care.

BACKGROUND: Research on women''s responses to intimate partner violence (IPV) has largely been limited to women who have been exposed to severe physical violence with scarce generalisation. This study aimed to analyse how Spanish abused women from different backgrounds and with different IPV characteristics respond to violence. METHOD: Women experiencing IPV before the previous year (1469) were selected from a large cross-sectional national survey of adult women recruited during 2006-7 among female patients seeking medical care for whatever reason in primary healthcare services. The outcome v

Queers in quarantine: Young LGBTQ+ people's experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic in Sweden.

The COVID-19 pandemic led to major restrictions of everyday life activities. This worsened the social situation of many people, and marginalized groups have been especially affected. This article explores how LGBTQ+ young adults in Sweden have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent recommendations and restrictions. Fifteen participants between 20-29 years, who self-identified as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+), were interviewed about their experiences. A thematic analysis of the data showed that the participants perceived their psychological wellbeing

The network of stress-related states and depression and anxiety symptoms during the COVID-19 lockdown.

BACKGROUND: The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and the social distancing protocols used to impede the spread of the virus may have severe mental health consequences. The purpose of this study was to investigate the network of components of pandemic-related negative psychological states (i.e., fear of infection, financial worries, loneliness) and symptoms of major depressive disorder (MDD) and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). METHODS: Data from 10,061 Norwegian adults recruited through an online survey during a period of strict social distancing protocols were analyzed by cross-sectional n

Persistent pseudomyopia following a whiplash injury in a previously emmetropic woman.

PURPOSE: Accommodative spasm, which manifests as ciliary muscle spasm, convergent strabismus or miosis, is a recognised consequence of head trauma. In whiplash cases, cervical spine hyperextension poses a risk of contra-coup injury and brainstem trauma, and is known to affect the visual system. However, to date, no cases of accommodative spasm due to whiplash injury have been reported. OBSERVATIONS: We present the case of a 34-year-old female who developed sudden onset blurred distance vision after a rear impact car crash, having previously been emmetropic. Her unaided distance visual acuity

Rural disparity in domestic violence prevalence and access to resources.

OBJECTIVE: Intimate partner violence (IPV) against women is a significant health issue in the United States and worldwide. The majority of studies on IPV have been conducted in urban populations. The objectives of this study are to determine if prevalence, frequency, and severity of IPV differ by rurality and to identify variance in geographic access to IPV resources. METHODS: A cross-sectional clinic-based survey of 1478 women was conducted to measure the 1-year prevalence of physical, sexual, and psychologic IPV. IPV intervention programs in the state were inventoried and mapped, and the di

Assessment and AI-Based Prediction of Complications in Reduction Mammoplasty: A Combined Statistical and Fuzzy Inference Approach in a 10-Year Cohort from Tehran Hospitals (2013-2023).

INTRODUCTION: Gigantomastia causes physical, psychological, and dermatological issues, often with ptosis; reduction mammoplasty effectively relieves symptoms but carries minor (self-limiting or medically managed) and major (surgically requiring) complications, influenced by factors such as BMI and smoking. METHOD: This retrospective cohort study included 439 patients (878 breasts) who underwent reduction mammoplasty by a single surgeon in Tehran hospitals from 2013 to 2023, with data extracted from medical records across three domains: surgical/anthropometric details, past medical history, an

Investigating PRPH2-associated retinal degeneration patient-reported outcomes in vision-related quality of life.

BACKGROUND: PRPH2-associated retinal degeneration (PARD) is one of the most common causes of inherited retinal disease and can impair visual function and quality of life. While genetic and clinical features of PARD have been described, patient-reported experiences of visual symptoms remain less well characterized. This study aims to evaluate self-reported visual function and quality of life among individuals with genetically confirmed PARD. METHODS: This cross-sectional study surveyed patients with confirmed PARD at a single academic center using the National Eye Institute Visual Function Que

The effects of kinesiophobia on postural control with chronic ankle instability.

BACKGROUND: Patients with chronic ankle instability (CAI) often experience injury-related fear following ankle injuries, a condition known as kinesiophobia. Little research has investigated the impact of kinesiophobia in patients with CAI. RESEARCH QUESTION: How does kinesiophobia impact the static and dynamic balance of individuals with CAI? METHODS: Fifty patients with CAI were divided into 2 subgroups based on their responses to the Tampa Scale of Kinesiophobia: 25 with kinesiophobia (CAI-K) and 25 without kinesiophobia (CAI-N). These groups were compared to 20 control participants. All p

Evaluation of intraoperative cardiovascular responses to closed repair for pectus excavatum.

OBJECTIVE: Closed repair of pectus excavatum (PE), also known as the Nuss procedure, has become more popular recently, and whether this operation results in true cardiac improvement as opposed to postoperative physical rehabilitation or a psychological effect deserves examination. METHODS: Ten PE patients (8 males, 2 females) aged 4 to 54 years (average, 19.6+/-14 years) were prospectively evaluated using preoperative computed tomography (CT) scan, pulmonary function studies, electrocardiogram and transthoracic echocardiographic (TTE) evaluation of cardiac function. "They like me, they like me not": popularity and adolescents' perceptions of acceptance predicting social functioning over time.

This study examined the dual roles of adolescents' perceptions of social acceptance and sociometric popularity in predicting relative changes over time in adolescents' social functioning. Observational, self-report, and peer report data were obtained from 164 adolescents who were interviewed at age 13 years and then again at age 14 years, as well as their same-sex close friends. Adolescents who felt positively about their own social standing fared well over time, regardless of their level of sociometric popularity. Further, low popularity was particularly problematic for adolescents who failed
