Lee, Young, Reddish, Lough, and Clayton (1983) reported that the timing control of jumping and vertically punching a dropping ball exploits the inverse of the rate of change of optical expansion, tau(r). We raise a number of methodological and logical criticisms against their experiment and conclusions and attempt to rectify them by examining elbow joint angles only, in seated punchers, under both monocular and binocular conditions, with two ball sizes, dropped from two heights. Differences between the binocular and monocular cases suggest the exploitation of different information. We present

Real-world objects and events are often demarcated and defined by changes of luminance. Such stimuli are easily noticed by human beings whether the stimuli occur in central or in peripheral vision. It is also possible to use differences of color, texture, contrast, or temporal characteristics to create visual stimuli (so-called non-luminance-domain or second-order stimuli). Here I report the discovery that a variety of spatially periodic, second-order patterns, when set in motion in peripheral vision, appear stationary even though their structure is clearly visible. The immobility of the secon

1. With standard psychophysical techniques the ability of normal subjects to detect negative pressures applied at the mouth was estimated. 2. The ability to detect changes in pressure when confined to the upper airway by closure of the glottis was less than when the pressures were transmitted below the glottis and were actively overcome by inspiratory muscle contraction. 3. The ability to detect changes in pressure with the glottis open was also impaired by passive ventilation and vibration of the chest. 4. Our results imply that the most sensitive mechanism for the detection of negative press

PURPOSE: To quantify the halo size produced by simulated multifocal and extended depth of focus (EDOF) intraocular lenses (IOLs) using a novel psychophysical method, and to compare the results with an established halo assessment tool, computational simulations, and subjective bothersomeness scores.
METHODS: Ten participants were each presented with ten IOL designs (three trifocals, three EDOFs, three bifocals, and one monofocal) simulated using SimVis Gekko visual simulator (2EyesVision, Spain). Halo size was quantified using both the established Halo V1.0 software and a custom-developed scro

We were interested in micro-variations in an athlete's psychophysical state that separate peak exertion from physiological collapse. Thus, we measured perceptual acuity in runners using a classic psychophysical approach, the just noticeable difference (JND) on two standard stimuli runs at treadmill speed corresponding to 70%VO2max and 80%VO2max. Thirty-four male runners (M age = 35.26, SD = 7.33 years) first performed a maximal treadmill test to determine the speed of a standard exercise bout for the JND trials. The JND trials consisted of four 5-minute running bouts on a treadmill with 5-minu

We examined how ambiguous motion signals are integrated over space to support the unambiguous perception of global motion. The motion of a Gaussian windowed drifting sine grating (Gabor) is consistent with an infinite number of grating velocities. To extract the consistent global motion of multi-Gabor arrays, the visual system must integrate ambiguous motion signals from disparate regions of visual space. We found an interaction between spatial arrangement and global motion integration in this process. Linear arrays of variably oriented Gabor elements appeared to move more slowly, reflecting s

Aging and Alzheimer's disease (AD) are accompanied by impairments of autonomous navigation and spatial orientation that commonly demand the abandonment of driving and independent living. We have studied the neuronal mechanisms of navigation using single neurons in monkey cerebral cortex, finding a specific population of cells that processes the visual motion patterns of optic flow that provide important cues about self-movement. We have found that AD patients show pronounced deficits in the perceptual processing of optic flow, with different patterns of less severe impairment in mild cognitive

In certain real-life situations, moiré patterns can enhance the observer's ability to resolve fine spatial detail of solid structures, theoretically to unlimited degrees. An example of such a situation can be seen in traffic signs on the M25 motorway around London. Moreover, owing to the interferential nature of the moiré pattern, its angular physical size is independent of observer distance, and thus creates an apparent size discrepancy: the closer you get, the smaller the size of the pattern appears to be-an illusory situation resembling Michael Ende's tale of the pseudo-giant Mr Tur Tur.

When subjects localize a flash relative to another stationary stimulus, the flash appears displaced in the direction of nearby motion signals (position capture; Whitney and Cavanagh, 2000 Nature Neuroscience 3 954-959). Our previous study had suggested that the position capture is larger for a flash presented ahead of a moving stimulus than for a flash behind it (Watanabe et al, 2003 Perception 32 545-559). In the present study, I investigated the spatial asymmetry of position capture. Experiment 1 demonstrated that asymmetric position capture occurs primarily in a moving-object-centered coord

When trains pass level crossings or turnouts, they are momentarily subject to relatively strong vibrations. In railway engineering, evaluation of the riding comfort under such occasional vibrations is called the momentary evaluation, which is distinguished from the long-term evaluation. In order to identify the effective vibrational characteristics on the momentary evaluation now controversial in Japan, an experiment was performed with a riding comfort simulator. Twenty adult subjects were exposed to lateral vibration with varying peak acceleration and crest factor. Referring to the vibrations

These experiments demonstrate that rats can immediately adjust their meal size in response to variations in the caloric density of a novel diet. However, this immediate caloric sensitivity only seems to appear when rats have been adapted to small, calorically insufficient meals. Rats in Experiment 1 were given timed access to unlimited quantities of an oil/water diet during baseline, and they showed no indication of compensating for changes in the caloric density of the oil/water diet during a test meal. Instead, they consumed about the same amount they had consumed during the preceding baseli

In the flash-lag effect (FLE) a moving object is perceived ahead of a stationary stimulus flashed in spatial alignment. Several explanations have been proposed to account for the FLE and its dependence on a variety of psychophysical attributes. Here, we show that a simple feed-forward network reproduces the standard FLE and several related manifestations, such as its modulation by stimulus luminance, trajectory, priming, and spatial predictability. A minimal set of elements, based on plausible neuronal mechanisms, yields a unified account of these visual illusions and possibly other perceptual

Acoustic reflex thresholds (ART) and loudness discomfort levels (LDL) were obtained from 51 ears of 34 deaf children using broad band noise and pure tones. Both thresholds and levels were recorded using the psychophysical method of tracking. Results indicate that the relationship between ART and LDL is at variance with similar data for normal hearing individuals. Specifically, in over 39% of these deaf children LDL was obtained at a lower intensity than ART. Implications for hearing aid fitting with deaf children are discussed.

Three patients who had undergone laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) correction for myopia were first seen because of suboptimal visual acuity (VA) and night blindness and/or photophobia. After a comprehensive examination including psychophysical and electrophysiological tests, two of the three patients were shown to suffer from a progressive conerod dystrophy. The third patient had retinitis pigmentosa. These cases illustrate the need for in depth preoperative evaluation in myopic patients about to undergo LASIK when signs or problems of night blindness and/or photophobia are present.

Recent studies have suggested that individuals who exhibit heightened sensitivity also exhibit higher rates and severity of restricted interests and repetitive behaviours. This line of research has been conducted almost exclusively through caregiver reports of sensitivity. Here, a more rigorous psychophysics paradigm was applied to assess sensory sensitivity and relate hypersensitivity to restricted interests and repetitive behaviours. In addition, commonly used questionnaire measures of sensory sensitivity were collected to determine if self-reported measures accurately reflect behavioural me…

Our detection data confirm earlier reports that small spot psychophysics can reveal information about local cone topography, and our color naming findings suggest that chromatic sensitivity may improve when the L/M ratio approaches unity.

The now well-known motion-silencing illusion has shown that salient changes among a group of objects' luminances, colors, shapes, or sizes m … d the amount of motion silencing as a function of eccentricity in human observers using traditional psychophysics. Fifteen observers reported whether dots in any of four concentric rings changed in luminance over a series of rotational velocities. The results in the human experiments showed that the threshold velocity for motion silencing almost linearly decrea …
