[What information can digital plethysmography provide in acrosyndromes?].

Digital plethysmography records digital pulsation and measures blood flow by occlusion and perfusion pressure. The pulsatile curve is modified in vasomotor disorders of the extremities, and is delayed and flattened in obstructive arteriopathy. In Raynaud's phenomenon, the basal flow (at 22 degrees C) decreases with clinical severity, and suppression of post-ischemic blood flow by cold seems to be an attribute of Raynaud's disease. Digital perfusion pressure is usually greater than or equal to 70% of the humeral systolic pressure. When it decreases under hot conditions, organic obstructive arte

The association between discordant umbilical arterial resistance in growth-restricted fetuses and adverse outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Assessing the umbilical artery pulsatility index via Doppler measurements plays a crucial role in evaluating fetal growth impairment. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate perinatal outcomes associated with discordant pulsatility indices of umbilical arteries in fetuses with growth restriction. STUDY DESIGN: In this retrospective cohort study, all singleton pregnancies were included if their estimated fetal weight and/or abdominal circumference fell below the 10th percentile for gestational age (2017-2022). Eligible cases included singleton pregnancies with concurrent sampli

Noninvasive detection of diffuse intracranial disease.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Intracranial arterial stenosis increases flow velocities on the upslope of the Spencer's curve of cerebral hemodynamics. However, the velocity can decrease with long and severely narrowed vessels. We assessed the frequency and accuracy for detection of focal and diffuse intracranial stenoses using novel diagnostic criteria that take into account increased resistance to flow with widespread lesions. METHODS: We evaluated consecutive patients referred to a neurovascular ultrasound laboratory with symptoms of cerebral ischemia. Transcranial Doppler mean flow velocities we

Infectious complications in patients with left ventricular assist device: etiology and outcomes in the continuous-flow era.

BACKGROUND: Continuous-flow left ventricular assist devices (LVAD) are increasingly being used in patients with end-stage heart failure and have largely replaced older generation pulsatile devices. While significant rates of infection have been reported in patients with pulsatile device support, incidence and outcomes of this complication for the continuous-flow device patients remain unknown. METHODS: Between June 2005 and August 2009, 81 patients were implanted with continuous-flow LVADs at Washington University School of Medicine either as bridge to transplantation or as destination therap

Literature Survey for In-Vivo Reynolds and Womersley Numbers of Various Arteries and Implications for Compliant In-Vitro Modelling.

PURPOSE: In-vitro modelling can be used to investigate haemodynamics of arterial geometry and stent implants. However, in-vitro model fidelity relies on precise matching of in-vivo conditions. In pulsatile flow, velocity distribution and wall shear stress depend on compliance, and the Reynolds and Womersley numbers. However, matching such values may lead to unachievable tolerances in phantom fabrication. METHODS: Published Reynolds and Womersley numbers for 14 major arteries in the human body were determined via a literature search. Preference was given to in-vivo publications but in-vitro an…

Antenatal diagnosis of tetralogy of Fallot with absent pulmonary valve accompanied by hydrops fetalis and polyhydramnios.

The case presented is an antenatal diagnosis of tetralogy of Fallot with absent pulmonary valve which was accompanied by hydrops fetalis and polyhydramnios with an absent stomach echo. Absent pulmonary valve was diagnosed by a cystic, pulsatile, aneurysmal dilatation of pulmonary arteries and a relatively small pulmonary valve annulus without a definite valve echo, in which a typical to-and-fro flow pattern was detected by the Doppler flow analysis. We will discuss some plausible roles of the grossly enlarged pulmonary arteries on hydrops fetalis and polyhydramnios.

Gradient mechanical environments modulate intra-osteonal fluid flow: a three-dimensional finite element study.

OBJECTIVE: Interstitial fluid flow within the osteonal lacunar-canalicular system (LCS) is crucial for osteocyte mechanotransduction and bone remodeling. This study aims to develop a three-dimensional finite element model of an osteon with gradient-varying boundary conditions to systematically investigate how mechanical loading, outer wall constraints, and pulsatile blood pressure modulate intra-osteonal fluid flow. METHODS: This study constructs a three-dimensional finite element model to systematically analyze the dynamic responses of fluid flow behavior under gradient boundary conditions.

A Rare Pediatric Case of Posttraumatic Pseudoaneurysm: Case Report and Literature Review.

Posttraumatic pseudoaneurysms are extremely rare in pediatric populations. In many cases, pseudoaneurysms may be confused with abscesses, epidermoid cysts, arteriovenous fistula, foreign objects, and ganglion cysts, as well as tumors. They are associated with distinguishing findings of "pulsatile mass, a palpable thrill, and an audible to-and-fro murmur" (1), which can be confirmed by various imaging techniques. In this report, we describe the case of a 4-year-old boy who presented to the pediatric emergency department 3 weeks after falling and subsequently getting cut by glass. Upon clinical

Effects of Vibration on Leg Blood Flow After Intense Exercise and Its Influence on Subsequent Exercise Performance.

This study aimed to determine the effects of vibration on leg blood flow after intense exercise and find out whether or not these effects can influence subsequent maximal exercise performance. Twenty-three participants performed an exercise test-to-exhaustion followed by a recovery period using six 1-minute sets of whole-body vibration (WBV; 25 Hz-4 mm) or a passive control (noWBV; 0 Hz-0 mm) in the seated position on separate days in random order. Blood flow was assessed at baseline and during each 1-minute interset rest periods post-WBV and noWBV. Thereafter, participants performed a cycle-e

Pulsatile lavage systems and their potential to penetrate soft tissue.

BACKGROUND: In orthopedic and trauma surgery, pulsatile lavage systems are used to clean soft tissue. This may be necessary in septic surgeries or in case of contaminated wounds after trauma. Positive features such as reduction of bacterial contamination and removal of foreign particles are counterbalanced by negative aspects such as bacterial seeding in deeper tissue layers, damage to various tissues and even cases of air embolism. PURPOSE: The aim of this prospective experimental in vitro study was to compare impact pressure and flow rate in three different pulsatile lavage systems and to d

Photoplethysmographic analysis of retinal videodata based on the Fourier domain approach.

Assessment of retinal blood flow inside the optic nerve head (ONH) and the peripapillary area is an important task in retinal imaging. For this purpose, an experimental binocular video ophthalmoscope that acquires precisely synchronized video sequences of the optic nerve head and peripapillary area from both eyes has been previously developed. It enables to compare specific characteristics of both eyes and efficiently detect the eye asymmetry. In this paper, we describe a novel methodology for the analysis of acquired video data using a photoplethysmographic approach. We describe and calculate

[Research progress of vascular pulsatile tinnitus].

Pulsatile tinnitus (PT) is relatively rare, which accounts for approximately 4% of patients with tinnitus. It originates from mostly vascular structures within the cranial cavity, head and neck region or thoracic cavity, and is transmitted to the cochlear by bony or vascular structures and the blood flow, stimulating patient's hearing. It can be the patient's subjective feelings, there can be objective performance.Vascular PT is more common than non-vascular PT. Vascular PT can be further classified by vessel of origin as arterial and venous ones, and the latter is more commonly seen clinicall

[Theory and Practice of Endoscopic Third Ventriculostomy].

Endoscopic third ventriculostomy(ETV)is a basic procedure for the surgical treatment of hydrocephalus. It buffers pulsatile pressure by creating an alternative route for the flow of cerebrospinal fluid and reduces trans-mantle pulsatile stress, thereby increasing compliance of the brain parenchyma. Blunt perforation of the third ventricular floor is done while avoiding injury to the foramen of Monro, the hypothalamus, the pituitary stalk, and some cisternal vessels. A major complication of ETV is arterial bleeding caused by injury to the basilar artery. Surgeons should wait with irrigation and

Development of in vitro microfluidic models to study endothelial responses to pulsatility with different mechanical circulatory support devices.

Continuous-flow ventricular assist devices (CFVAD) and counterpulsation devices (CPD) are used to treat heart failure (HF). CFVAD can diminish pulsatility, but pulsatile modes have been implemented to increase vascular pulsatility. The effects of CFVAD in a pulsatile mode and CPD support on the function of endothelial cells (ECs) are yet to be investigated. In this study, two in vitro microfluidic models for culturing ECs are proposed to reproduce blood pressure (BP) and wall shear stress (WSS) on the arterial endothelium while using these medical devices. The layout and parameters of the two
