We report a case of a 54-year-old man with sudden-onset double-vision. On admission, neurological examination showed upward and downward gaze palsy on voluntary and smooth pursuit movements, and vertical oculocephalic maneuver elicited a full upward and downward response. Bell's phenomenon, horizontal eye movements and convergence were not impaired. Based on these findings, supranuclear dissociated vertical gaze palsy was diagnosed. T1-weighted MR images revealed low intensity on the medial side of the right thalamo-mesencephalic junction, which impaired the rostral interstitial nucleus of the

The haze effect induces light attenuation and color shifting in distant objects, thereby diminishing the contrast and saturation of images. In pursuit of restoring image clarity, a plethora of dehazing methods have been successively introduced. Nevertheless, the development of effective and practical methodologies remains a formidable challenge due to the requirement for powerful feature extraction capability alongside consideration of computational efficiency and model scalability. To address these issues, we put forward a boosted spiking neural network with retina mechanism, termed ReBo-SNN,

PURPOSE: Infantile strabismus syndrome is a common disorder characterized by a chronic misalignment of the eyes that is present in infancy. The disorder is associated with a wide range of abnormalities including severe impairments of binocular vision, impaired depth perception, impaired motion perception, amblyopia, nystagmus, a loss of disparity vergence, asymmetrical smooth pursuit gain, and saccade disconjugacy. The chronic inability to direct both eyes to the same visual target forces the brain to decide which eye to bring to any given object of interest in the visual field. We wondered if

Eye movement assessments have the potential to help in diagnosis and tracking of neurological disorders. Cerebellar ataxias cause profound and characteristic abnormalities in smooth pursuit, saccades, and fixation. Oculomotor dysmetria (i.e., hypermetric and hypometric saccades) is a common finding in individuals with cerebellar ataxia. In this study, we evaluated a scalable approach for detecting and quantifying oculomotor dysmetria. Eye movement data were extracted from iPhone video recordings of the horizontal saccade task (a standard clinical task in ataxia) and combined with signal proces

Knowledge about the relevance and extent of human eye movement control in the cingulate cortex to date is very limited. Experiments in non-human primates brought about evidence for a potentially central role of the dorsal bank of the cingulate sulcus in saccadic eye movements. In humans, a putative cingulate eye field (CEF) in the same region has been proposed; however, its function and location still remain controversial. Another area in the posterior cingulate cortex, the cingulate sulcus visual area (CSv), has been shown to respond to visual motion cues and also ocular motor tasks. In this

BACKGROUND: X-linked dystonia-parkinsonism (XDP) is characterized by the unique transition of dystonia to parkinsonism and striatal degeneration. Slowing of saccades on clinical examination has been taken as suggestive of a progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) phenotype.
OBJECTIVES: To elucidate whether eye movement abnormalities in XDP patients reflect striatonigral impairment or deficits in the brainstem saccade generator as present in PSP.
METHODS: Eye movements of 18 male XDP patients from the Philippines and 16 ethnically and age-matched, healthy control participants were analyzed and t

Neuro-otologic examination is very important in evaluation of balance system. Multiple sclerosis (MS) is the most common chronic, debilitating disease characterized by focal demyelinization that develop throughout of the central nerves system at varying time. Patients with MS presented various complaints and signs, so the aim of the study was the neuro-otologic presentation of multiple findings in patients with MS and comparison with reviewing literature. The study was carried out in 32 patients with MS (21 with relapsing-remitting, 9 with secondary progressive, 1 with primary progressive and

The idiopathic cerebellar ataxias (IDCA) comprise a wide spectrum of neurodegenerative diseases with heterogeneous neuropathology, characterized by the negativity of search for any known genetic mutation. On the basis of both their clinical presentation and their magnetic resonance imaging pattern, patients with IDCA can be subdivided into patients with a purely cerebellar syndrome and atrophy of the cerebellum (IDCA-C) and patients with additional noncerebellar symptoms and atrophy of both cerebellum and brainstem (IDCA-P). The aim of the present study was to evaluate the disaggregated contri

The identification of the RFC1 homozygous intronic expansion in cerebellar ataxia neuropathy and vestibular areflexia syndrome (CANVAS) highlighted that genetically determined CANVAS patients exhibit a wide range of clinical presentations and natural course. Previous studies suggested a link between disease severity and the size of the intronic expansion. The aim of our study was to obtain quantitative data related to vestibular and cerebellar impairments using oculomotor recordings to provide further evidence of a link between RFC1 intronic expansion size and the phenotype. This study recruit

Eye movement deficits, including abnormal saccades and impaired smooth pursuits, are among the earliest observable indicators of neurodegenerative diseases, particularly Alzheimer's disease (AD). These deficits arise from dysfunctions in neural circuits controlling oculomotor function, including the superior colliculus, parietal and frontal eye fields, cerebellum, and locus coeruleus (LC). Since these circuits rely on a delicate balance of excitation and inhibition (E/I), their impairment reflects broader neural dysregulation seen in neurodegenerative diseases. Notably, oculomotor abnormalitie

The success of a sporting task requiring an object to be kicked or hit toward a target (e.g., kicking a ball into a goal) is impacted by the length of the Quiet Eye (QE). Limitations in the ocular motor system mean that after impact, these fast moving objects are not tracked using smooth pursuit eye movements. Rather, anticipatory fixations are used to re-fixate ahead of the moving object.Using a soccer penalty kick, the current study investigated whether striking a stationary object to generate high ball velocity results in an anticipatory fixation prior to ball contact and if this occurs at

Animals use rules to initiate behaviors. Such rules are often described as triggers that determine when behavior begins. However, although less explored, these selection rules are also an opportunity to establish sensorimotor constraints that influence how the behavior ends. These constraints may be particularly significant in influencing success in prey capture. Here we explore this in dragonfly prey interception. We found that in the moments leading up to takeoff, perched dragonflies employ a series of sensorimotor rules that determine the time of takeoff and increase the probability of succ

Hearing is confronted by a similar problem to vision when the observer moves. The image motion that is created remains ambiguous until the observer knows the velocity of eye and/or head. One way the visual system solves this problem is to use motor commands, proprioception, and vestibular information. These "extraretinal signals" compensate for self-movement, converting image motion into head-centered coordinates, although not always perfectly. We investigated whether the auditory system also transforms coordinates by examining the degree of compensation for head rotation when judging a moving

The pre-cerebellar nuclei act as a gate for the entire neocortical, brainstem and spinal cord afferent input destined for the cerebellum. Since no pathoanatomical studies of these nuclei had yet been performed in spinocerebellar ataxia type 2 (SCA2) or type 3 (SCA3), we carried out a detailed postmortem study of the pre-cerebellar nuclei in six SCA2 and seven SCA3 patients in order to further characterize the extent of brainstem degeneration in these ataxic disorders. By means of unconventionally thick serial sections through the brainstem stained for lipofuscin pigment and Nissl material, we

The hydroxyapatite orbital implant has been used in the anophthalmic patient to give good motility of the artificial eye and a cosmetic result which matches that of the natural eye. It is thought to reduce the unacceptable complication rate that has been associated with other implants, as its buried, vascularized state deters extrusion and migration of the implant. Eighty consecutive patients were followed, 33 of whom had been referred for primary enucleation or evisceration, and 47 for secondary implant surgery. Thirteen of the secondary patients already had implants in situ. There were 44 ma

1. Eye- and head movements were recorded in unrestrained, spontaneously behaving rabbits with a new technique, based upon phase detection of signals induced in implanted coils by a rotating magnetic field. 2. Movements of the eye in space were exclusively saccadic. In the intersaccadic intervals the eyes were stabilized in space, even during vigorous head movements. Most of this stability was maintained in darkness, except for the occurrence of slow drift. 3. Many saccades were initiated while the head was stationary. They were accompanied by a similar, but slower head rotation with approximat

UNLABELLED: The Military Acute Concussion Evaluation 2 (MACE 2), which includes the Vestibular-Ocular Motor Screening (VOMS) tool and the single-leg stance component of the modified Balance Error Scoring System (mBESS), was introduced in 2018 as an assessment of acute mTBI in US military personnel. However, the reliability of the VOMS and mBESS in this population has not been established.
OBJECTIVES: The primary purpose of this study was to examine the reliability of the VOMS across a 6-month period in healthy, uninjured US Army Special Operations Command (USASOC) personnel.

We usually perceive a stationary, stable world despite coherent visual motion induced by eye movements. This astonishing example of perceptual invariance results from a comparison of visual information with internal reference signals (nonretinal signals) predicting the visual consequences of an eye movement. The important consequence of this concept is that our subjective percept of visual motion reflects the outcome of this comparison rather than retinal image slip. To localize the cortical networks underlying this comparison, we compared magnetoencephalography (MEG) responses under two condi

Vestibular examination (electronystagmography with rotatory chair and caloric tests) was performed on 18 carriers and 1 phenocopy carrier in a Dutch family with autosomal dominant nonsyndromic DFNA15. This is the second DFNA15 family worldwide to have a novel L289F mutation in POU4F3. Vestibular involvement appeared to be present in 2 affected individuals according to their medical history. Vestibular examination results in an extended subset of L289F POU4F3 mutation carriers varied from normal to areflexia. DFNA15 is the third cochleovestibular disorder, after DFNA9 and DFNA11, in the autosom
