OBJECTIVE: To investigate the treatment outcomes of modified sternocleidomastoid myocutaneous flap with a pedicle containing superior thyroid artery in repairing postoperative hypopharyngeal defect.
METHODS: From Dec. 2003 to Sep. 2010, the modified sternocleidomastoid myocutaneous flap was used to restore defect postoperation of hypopharynx defect for twelve patients with pyriform sinus carcinoma, age range from 47 to 72 years old. PURPOSE: The midfacial degloving approach (MFDA) is the primary option for the removal of benign and malignant sinonasal tumours. However, the classic MFDA does not compensate for the fact that most benign and malignant paranasal sinus (PNS) tumours are unilateral and the incisions may lead to some unnecessary complications?. 13 male and 8 female patients with metastatic squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of an unknown primary tumor localized to the neck were treated with radiotherapy (RT) and cisplatin (CDDP). There were 12 (58%) and 9 (42%) patients, while no patient had N1 disease. All patients underwent biopsy. RT was given to all possible sites of the primary tumor (nasopharynx, pyriform sinus, and the base of the tongue). Ectopic parathyroid adenomas are a common cause of postsurgical persistent primary hyperparathyroidism. Our case highlights a patient with a negative bilateral 4-gland exploration with follow-up parathyroid 4-dimensional CT and Tc-MIBI SPECT/CT, yielding focal uptake in the right piriform sinus. Subsequent direct laryngoscopy revealed a mass in the piriform sinus, which was resected with surgical pathology yielding parathyroid adenoma.
