We examined social and physical violence experienced by American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) women in prostitution and their impacts on the mental and physical health of 105 women (81% Anishinaabe, mean age = 35 years) recruited through service agencies in three Minnesota cities. In childhood, abuse, foster care, arrests, and prostitution were typical. Homelessness, rape, assault, racism, and pimping were common. The women's most prevalent physical symptoms included muscle pain, impaired memory or concentration, and headaches. Symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder and dissociation were c…

There is increasing research evidence that stressors in the social and physical environment (e.g., poverty, inadequate housing, air pollution, and racism) are associated with poor health outcomes. Given the complex set of determinants of health status, the disproportionate burden of disease experienced within marginalized communities, and the limited effectiveness of traditional prevention research, particularly within communities of color, there have been growing calls for more comprehensive and participatory approaches to public health research and practice. The purpose of this article is to…

BACKGROUND: The integration of literature and the humanities into medical education offers numerous benefits for both students and the broad … ational goals, particularly the potential to stimulate critical reflection on themes such as grief, racism, gender, and social justice. Registration took place through the Integrated Academic Activities Management System, and the monthly meetings were held in the Medical School auditorium. Participants received pedagogical support via social networks, cl …

Critical reflection is a necessary yet not sufficient prerequisite for critical action, but little is known about conditions that facilitate associations between the two. This study investigates when associations between critical reflection on racism and antiracist action among White youth in the Netherlands are stronger, examining critical motivation, parental ethnic-racial socialization, and intergroup friendships as facilitating conditions. 338 17-21-years old White youth (M = 19.44, SD = 1.28, 73% female) participated in a survey study. The identified positive association between critical …

This chapter discusses the healthcare disparities in headache medicine and proposes solutions to mitigate them. Disparities exist in the diagnosis, treatment, and outcomes of underserved patients with migraine and other headache disorders. Systemic racism, provider bias and lack of cultural sensitivity, a history of mistrust and historical injustices, lack of research of underrepresented groups, lack of diversity in clinical and research realms as well as leadership positions within national institutions and organizations all contribute to the ongoing disparities in headache medicine. Making s…

Mass incarceration is an ethical crisis. Yet it is not only the magnitude of the system that is troubling. Mass incarceration has been created and sustained by racism, classism, and ableism, and the problems of the criminal legal system will not be solved without meaningfully intervening upon these forms of oppression. Beyond that, incarceration itself-whether of one person or 2 million-represents a moral failing. To punish and control, rather than invest in community and healing, is antithetical to the values of the field of bioethics. This commentary, which responds to the article "Fifty Yea…

The concept of normal in hematology, similar to that in other areas of medicine, is anchored to the perspective of those setting the standard. This means that several laboratory reference intervals and approaches to the conditions of thrombosis and hemostasis are influenced by the vantage point of those in power. Structural inequity, including systemic racism and sexism, can lead to inappropriate normalization of disease states, such as anemia or iron deficiency, or delayed diagnoses, such as in von Willebrand disease. This review will focus on how laboratory reference intervals perpetuate the…

We describe how mass incarceration directly undermines the core values of reproductive justice and how this affects incarcerated and nonincarcerated women.Mass incarceration, by its very nature, compromises and undermines bodily autonomy and the capacity for incarcerated people to make decisions about their reproductive well-being and bodies; this is done through institutionalized racism and is disproportionately done to the bodies of women of color. This violates the most basic tenets of reproductive justice-the right to have a child, not to have a child, and to parent the children you have w…

Racial-ethnic diversity is lacking in psychedelic science. Efforts have been made to increase racial-ethnic representation among clinical trial participant populations, but much work remains. This column aims to describe this disparity, outline potential benefits of eliminating this disparity, and provide recommendations for achieving equity and justice within the research landscape of psychedelic treatments for mental disorders.

The COVID-19 pandemic has accentuated racial and socioeconomic disparities that have existed in the U.S. because of structural racism. We aimed to understand how the legacy of historical redlining policies was associated with COVID-19 incidence in Boston ZIP code tabulation areas (ZCTAs) from March 2020 to December 2022. Data were extracted from the Institute for Social Research at the University of Michigan, the Boston Public Health Commission, the Boston Planning & Development Agency, and the American Community Survey. We ran a generalized linear model accounting for time to explore the asso…

INTRODUCTION: Racism and discrimination are a public health problem. This study aims to examine the association of racially-motivated discrimination distress using the Adolescent Discrimination Distress Index (ADDI) and its subscales - institutional, educational, and peer - with tobacco use outcomes.
METHODS: Weighted logistic regression was used to model the effect of discrimination on past 30-day tobacco use, poly-tobacco use, use frequency, tobacco dependence, intention to quit, and history of quit attempt using data from the 2023 National Youth Tobacco Survey.
RESULTS: Approximately 53.9…

I argue that "Professional Notes" both reflected and reinforced the anti-Indigenous racism that permeated the medical profession, particularly during its consolidation in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. I also make a methodological argument for the study of joking within the history of medicine, presenting "Professional N …

Mexican-origin populations tend to reside in disadvantaged neighborhoods, increasing adolescents' vulnerability to internalizing symptoms. While prior research highlights neighborhood disadvantage's impact on adolescents, few studies explore its effects on both perceived parenting (maternal and paternal) and internalizing symptoms and the underlying mechanism (i.e., subjective neighborhood violence) explaining such association. Notably, adolescents' perceptions of their neighborhood may vary across adolescent discrimination experiences (i.e., ethnic and group discrimination), subsequently cont

Manifestation determination reviews (MDRs) are federally mandated as a condition of extended removal for students with disabilities. Despite the potentially significant consequences MDRs hold for students with disabilities, data on the role that biases play in these high-stakes decisions are limited. This investigation sought to elucidate potential biases affecting MDRs across 105 school districts (N = 517) using two newly developed MDR measures assessing MDR knowledge and perceived student intentionality. In an online investigation using experimental and cross-sectional strategies, school per

There is consensus about the importance of developing a strong cadre of effective multilevel interventions to eliminate the impacts of unjust social processes, such as structural racism and other harmful social determinants of health (SDOH), on health inequities in the USA. However, the available cadre of rigorously evaluated evidence-based interventions for SDOH mitigation remains underdeveloped relative to the magnitude of historic and current health inequities. The proposed manuscript addresses this gap in two ways: first, by introducing a heuristic framework to inform decisions in multilev…

Racial-ethnic discrimination is a prevalent stressor for Mexican-origin individuals that potentiates health inequities in depressive symptoms. However, existing research has primarily focused on individual-level associations between discrimination and depressive symptoms, neglecting the interdependent nature within family systems. Little is known about how one family member's discriminatory experiences relate to the depressive symptoms of others. Although ethnoracial socialization may disrupt the link from discrimination to depressive symptoms, how different ethnoracial socialization practices

Because of interlocking oppressions of racism and sexism (e.g. intersectionality), Black women's experiences of high rates of sexual violence are often ignored. A critical Black feminist framework, cultural betrayal trauma theory (CBTT) examines within-group violence in the Black community, which has compounding harm due to inequality. Though quantitative research has found support for CBTT, Black young women survivors' perspectives have not been examined. Therefore, the purpose of the current exploratory study was to engage in intersectionality praxis to qualitatively examine Black young wome…
