Influence of nitrogen, oxygen, and nitroimidazole radiosensitizers on DNA damage induced by ionizing radiation.

Oxygen and nitroaromatic compounds are known to enhance the sensitivity of cells to ionizing radiation. Employing calf thymus DNA and oligo(dA)12/poly(dT), we have examined the differences to DNA damage, in particular thymine glycols and the 3'-DNA termini at strand breaks, arising from irradiation under anoxic and oxic conditions and the presence and absence of misonidazole [1-(2-nitro-1-imidazoyl)-3-methoxy-2-propanol]. We show that (i) irradiation under nitrogen generates strand breaks almost exclusively with 3'-phosphate termini; (ii) irradiation under oxic conditions increases the yield o

Cytogenetic study in lymphocytes from children exposed to ionizing radiation after the Chernobyl accident.

The present study concerns the monitoring of children from the Byelorussian, Ukrainian and Russian republics exposed to the fall-out of the Chernobyl accident. Cytogenetic analyses have been performed on 41 children coming from different areas and exhibiting varying amounts of 137Cs internal contamination, as evaluated by whole-body counter (WBC) analysis. On a total of 28,670 metaphases scored, radiation-induced chromosome damage is still present, although at a very low frequency. Due to the very low fraction of dicentrics, because of the time elapsed from the accident and the relatively low

Cyclin B expression in HeLa cells during the G2 block induced by ionizing radiation.

After exposure to ionizing radiation, eukaryotic cells undergo a division delay which is reflected by increased time spent in the G2 portion of the cell cycle. Recent information identifies increased levels of mitotic cyclins as key biochemical events initiating mitosis. In HeLa cells cyclin B mRNA and protein levels have been shown to increase in G2 and to decrease after division is completed. Cyclin B protein binds to cdc2, resulting in histone kinase activity which is necessary for the initiation of mitosis. Accordingly, we chose to investigate how cyclin B mRNA and protein levels were pert

Effects of ionizing radiation on the blood brain barrier permeability to pharmacologically active substances.

Ionizing radiation can impair the integrity of the blood brain barrier (BBB). Data on early and late damage after brain irradiation are usually reported separately, yet a gradual transition between these two types has become evident. Signs appearing within 3 weeks after irradiation are considered to be early manifestations. The mechanism of radiation-effected integrity impairment of the BBB is discussed in relation to changes in morphological structures forming the BBB, the endothelium of intracerebral vessels, and in the surrounding astrocytes. Alterations in the function of the BBB are manif

Differential effect of ionizing radiation on transcription in repair-deficient and repair-proficient mice.

Experiments were designed to examine in vivo changes in total transcription and in the expression of the c-fos gene following whole-body exposure of mice to JANUS fission-spectrum neutrons. Radiation repair-deficient (wst/wst) and -proficient (wst/., C57BL/6 x C3H F1) mice were exposed to JANUS fission-spectrum neutrons calibrated to deliver a gut dose of 50 cGy. Animals were sacrificed less than 10 or at 60 min postirradiation, and gut tissues were removed for study. Our results revealed that, in repair-proficient mice, an immediate depression (relative to untreated control) in total transcri

Learning disabilities in individuals exposed prenatally to ionizing radiation: the Hiroshima and Nagasaki experiences.

The brain, undoubtedly the most complex organ in the mammalian body, is the culmination of a long and interrelated sequence of molecular, cellular and tissue events. Brain function hinges on the orderly progression of these, each of which must occur correctly, temporally and spatially. Impingement on any one will give rise to a less developed system of cellular connections, and hence impaired function. Moreover, the neurons of the central nervous system are not self-renewing and thus neuronal loss cannot be repaired through repopulation. Reanalysis of the data on the prenatally exposed survivo

Some recent statistical analyses of two long-term studies of exposure to ionizing radiation.

Two long-term studies of cancer mortality in population exposed to high doses of ionizing radiation are described briefly. Statistical analysis plays a key role in establishing to what extent it is appropriate to generalize from the experience of these populations to that of other populations who have been exposed, usually at lower doses. Two examples of recent analyses are given. First, a detailed comparison of the cancer mortality experience in the two studies has been carried out; this has shown a high level of agreement between them. In the second example the relation between the radiogeni

[Mathematical model of yeast cell recovery after combined exposure to ionizing radiation and hyperthermia].

A mathematical description of yeast cell recovery after the combined effect of ionizing radiation and hyperthermia is presented. The degree of cell injury was predicted using a calculated irreversible component. A good agreement between the experimental and theoretical results was demonstrated. The possibility of using the proposed model for quantitation of the postirradiation recovery after other combined treatments is discussed.

Physical and biological properties of U.S. standard endotoxin EC after exposure to ionizing radiation.

Techniques that reduce the toxicity of bacterial endotoxins are useful for studying the relationship between structure and biological activity. We used ionizing radiation to detoxify a highly refined endotoxin preparation. U.S. standard endotoxin EC. Dose-dependent changes occurred by exposure to 60Co-radiation in the physical properties and biological activities of the endotoxin. Sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide slab gel electrophoresis showed gradual loss of the polysaccharide components (O-side chain and R-core) from the endotoxin molecules. In contrast, although endotoxin revealed a c

Patterns of neuroglial proliferation in spinal cord white matter following exposure to ionizing radiation.

X-irradiation temporarily decreases the proliferative activity of neuroglia in immature rat spinal cord. Later, the proliferative activity in these irradiated regions surpasses that noted in control rats. Areas adjacent to the irradiated region have a greater than normal percentage of labelled neuroglia and may also be a source of neuroglia which re-populate the irradiated zone.

Worry, coping, and psychological distress under low-dose ionizing radiation exposure: long-term psychological impact among residents of radiation-contaminated buildings.

UNLABELLED: Long-term psychological effects of low-dose radiation exposure have received limited attention. This study examined radiation-related worry, coping, and psychological distress among residents exposed to contaminated buildings in Taiwan, and tested the mediating roles of approach and avoidant coping. METHODS: a cross-sectional survey (2022-2023) recruited 268 residents with prior exposure. Radiation-related worry, coping strategies, and psychological distress were assessed using validated scales. Correlation and multiple regression analyses evaluated associations and mediation. RE

Synergistic Effects of UVB and Ionizing Radiation on Human Non-Malignant Cells: Implications for Ozone Depletion and Secondary Cosmic Radiation Exposure.

The ozone layer in the Earth's atmosphere filters solar radiation and limits the unwanted effects on humans. A depletion of this ozone shield would permit hazardous levels of UV solar radiation, especially in the UVB range, to bombard Earth's surface, resulting in potentially significant effects on human health. The concern for these adverse effects intensifies if we consider that the UVB solar radiation is combined with secondary cosmic radiation (SCR) components, such as protons and muons, as well as terrestrial gamma rays. This research aims to delve into the intricate interplay between cos

Association of telomere length with chronic exposure to ionizing radiation among inhabitants of natural high background radiation areas of Ramsar, Iran.

Purpose: There are few areas in the world where ionizing radiation (IR) dose received by the public from radon gas and other radioactive elements are much higher than recommended limits. Telomere length is a potential biomarker of genomic instability due to oxidative stress from IR exposure. In this study, we investigated the impact of chronic exposure to environmental IR on relative telomere length (RTL) in white blood cells (WBC) among inhabitants of high background radiation areas (HBRA) of Ramsar, Iran. Materials and methods: One hundred and four individuals from HBRAs of Ramsar and 104 ag

Evidence for the lack of an increase in DNA damage in occupational healthcare workers exposed to ionizing radiation: An indication of radiation safety.

Understanding the health concerns linked to long-term low-dose ionizing radiation exposure is essential to creating safety protocols and protective gear for healthcare workers. Despite reports on the biological effects of low-dose chronic or protracted exposure to ionizing radiation, its association with long-term health effects remains unclear. To examine this, the authors obtained and tested peripheral blood samples from control participants (Healthcare workers not involved in radiation-based work (n = 21) and healthcare professionals (n = 25) receiving low-dose radiation over time as part o

Circulating Cytokine/Chemokine Concentrations Respond to Ionizing Radiation Doses but not Radiation Dose Rates: Granulocyte-Colony Stimulating Factor and Interleukin-18.

Exposure to ionizing radiation is a crucial life-threatening factor in nuclear and radiological incidents. It is known that ionizing radiation affects cytokine/chemokine concentrations in the blood of B6D2F1 mice. It is not clear whether radiation dose rates would vary the physiological response. Therefore, in this study we utilized data from two experiments using B6D2F1 female mice exposed to six different dose rates ranging from low to high rates. In one experiment, mice received a total dose of 8 Gy (LD0/30) of 60Co gamma radiation at four dose rates: 0.04, 0.15, 0.30 and 0.47 Gy/min. Blood
