Protective effect of prostaglandin E₁ on radiation-induced proliferative inhibition and apoptosis in keratinocytes and healing of radiation-induced skin injury in rats.

We examined the effects of prostaglandin E₁ (PGE₁) on radiation-induced proliferation inhibition and apoptosis in keratinocytes and healing of radiation-induced skin injury in a rat model. PGE₁ had a protective effect on radiation-induced growth inhibition in keratinocytes in vitro, but not in fibroblasts. Varying concentrations of PGE₁ were subcutaneously administered into the posterior neck region. X-irradiation at a dose of 20 Gy was administrated to the lower part of the back using a lead sheet with two holes 30 min to 1 h before or after the administration of PGE₁. Although X-irradiation

The histological and biochemical analysis of the effects of radiofrequency radiation on testis tissue of rats and the protective effect of melatonin.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Primarily due to wireless communication devices, especially mobile phones, there has been a steady rise in the intensity of nonionizing radiofrequency radiation (RFR). In recent years, increased human health problems raised concerns about whether there is a positive relationship between intense exposure to RFR and public health. The present study aims to investigate the effects of GSM-like RFR exposure on the male reproductive system and the impact of melatonin treatment (synergistic, antagonist, or additive). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-six male Wistar Albino rats were used

Radioprotective effect of sulphydryl group containing triazole derivative to modulate the radiation- induced clastogenic effects.

Protection of biological systems against radiation damage is of paramount importance during accidental and unavoidable exposure to radiation. Several physico-chemical and biological factors collectively contribute to the damage caused by radiation and are, therefore, targets for developing radioprotectors. Chemicals capable of scavenging free radicals, relieving oxidative stress, promoting antioxidant activity and modulating immune response have been some of the radioprotectors extensively investigated with limited success. It has long been known that some of the most effective radioprotective

A double-blind, randomized, sham-controlled trial of the effect of a radiation-attenuating drape on radiation exposure to endoscopy staff during ERCP.

OBJECTIVES: Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is associated with radiation exposure to the endoscopist and staff that may be significant in high-volume centers. We investigated whether a radiation-attenuating drape over the fluoroscopy image intensifier reduces radiation exposure during ERCP. METHODS: We performed a prospective, randomized, double-blind trial of 100 therapeutic ERCPs at a tertiary-care university center. Procedures were randomly assigned to groups receiving lead-free radiation-attenuating drapes (n=50) or identical sham drapes (n=50). The drapes were suspe

Mathematical modelling and analysis of thermoregulation effects on blood viscosity under magnetic effects and thermal radiation in a permeable stretching capillary.

The current study deals with the mathematical modelling and analysis of the effects of thermoregulation on blood viscosity under magnetic and thermal radiation effects on a permeable, stretching blood capillary. The model comprises the governing equations of the resulting boundary layer problem, which is a set of nonlinear partial differential equations, and this is transformed into a coupled system of nonlinear differential equations using similarity transformation. The numerical solution of the problem is attained by the fourth-order Runge Kutta method with the shooting method. The current w…

Trifluridine/tipiracil enhances radiation-induced abscopal effects and augments PD-1 blockade in gastric cancer.

Gastric cancer (GC) often exhibits resistance to anti-programmed death-1 (PD-1) immunotherapy. Immunogenic cell death (ICD) enhances antitumor immunity, and trifluridine/tipiracil (FTD/TPI) induces ICD and modulates immunity. Radiation therapy (RT) may trigger abscopal effects. We investigated whether FTD/TPI combined with RT enhances tumor immunity in GC and its impact with PD-1 blockade. ICD induction by FTD and RT in YTN16 mouse GC cells was assessed by calreticulin, high-mobility group box 1 (HMGB1), and ATP evaluation. A dual subcutaneous YTN16 tumor model was established in C57BL/6J mice

Radiation-Induced Synthesis of a Minocycline-Derived Polycyclic Scaffold with Anti-Inflammatory and Antibacterial Effects.

Radiation is widely used as a powerful tool for inducing molecular transformation and expanding chemical diversity; however, its application in clinically relevant antibiotics remains limited. Minocycline (1), a clinically used tetracycline antibiotic, was subjected to gamma irradiation at doses of up to 30 kGy, resulting in the formation of a previously unreported radiation-induced derivative, minocyclinosin A (2). The structure of the newly generated compound was elucidated by comprehensive spectroscopic analyses, including one- and two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and

Mechanistic insight into the reprotoxic effects of chronic gamma radiation on spermatogenesis in Caenorhabditis elegans.

Ionizing radiation is a potent genotoxic agent that may cause detrimental effects on reproductive processes. This study investigated cellular events and transcriptomic alterations underlying reproductive defects caused by chronic gamma (γ) radiation in Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans). Continuous exposure (100 mGy/h; total dose: 4.8 Gy) throughout larval development reduced spermatid counts (38.8%) and total brood size (26.4%). It also resulted in delayed and attenuated residual body (RB) formation (22.8%), implicating reduced number of spermatocytes or failed meiosis. Targeted exposure of

Male Reproductive and Cellular Damage After Prenatal 3.5 GHz Radiation Exposure: One-Year Postnatal Effects.

This study investigates the long-term effects of prenatal exposure to 3.5 GHz radiofrequency radiation (RFR) on male reproductive health. Pregnant Wistar Hannover rats were divided into sham control, full-gestation exposure (3T RFR), and late-gestation exposure (2T RFR) groups (2 h/day). Male offspring were euthanized at 12 months for testicular analysis. In the 3T RFR group, seminiferous tubule diameter and epithelial height were significantly reduced compared to controls (adjusted p = 0.03 and 9.71 × 10-8), along with lower Johnsen scores (adjusted p = 0.022). Abnormal sperm morphology incre

Effects of neutron radiation on pharmaceuticals in deep space-like environments - general anesthesia in space.

In deep space environments such as the Moon and Mars, secondary radiation generated by interactions between galactic cosmic rays and spacecraft walls or planetary surfaces presents a significant challenge. In particular, the effects of neutron radiation remain insufficiently understood. This study investigates the impact of neutron radiation on pharmaceuticals, specifically the general anesthetic propofol (2,6-Diisopropylphenol). Neutron irradiation experiments were conducted using the RIKEN Accelerator-driven compact Neutron Source (RANS), employing fast neutrons with energies of 1-5 MeV at d

Simulated Galactic Cosmic Rays effects on fungal materials: towards biotechnological radiation protection for space habitats.

PURPOSE: Human space exploration is on an upward trajectory with new space stations being manufactured for scientific experiments, industrial development, and space tourism. These spacecraft in LEO and MEO will take advantage of Earth's magnetic field for radiation protection. Astronauts on the International Space Station receive an average radiation dose of 25 µSV/hour; around 250 times greater than the average sea level dose rate. Solar activity can create an increased level of radiation that requires astronauts to stay sheltered while the solar storm hits. The Lunar Gateway, another space s

Integrative physiological study of radiation-induced lung injury: effects on cardiac function and kidney integrity.

Radiotherapy is used to treat tumors in the chest, but can cause radiation-induced lung injury (RILI) in 5%-50% of patients. The study investigated changes in lung and heart function and kidney integrity in a model of RILI. Primary outcome was lung compliance at 12 wk. Secondary outcomes included analysis of ventilatory effort, cardiovascular function, and renal integrity. About 30 adult Wistar rats (8-10 wk old, 390 ± 22 g) were randomized into two groups: one received 15 Gray (Gy) of irradiation to the right lung radiation (RLR group, n = 20), whereas control group (CTRL group, n = 10) recei
