Automatic detection of the meningioma tumor firmness in MRI images.

Meningioma is among the most common primary tumors of the brain. The firmness of Meningioma is a critical factor that influences operative strategy and patient counseling. Conventional methods to predict the tumor firmness rely on the correlation between the consistency of Meningioma and their preoperative MRI findings such as the signal intensity ratio between the tumor and the normal grey matter of the brain. Machine learning techniques have not been investigated yet to address the Meningioma firmness detection problem. The main purpose of this research is to couple supervised learning algor

T1- and ECV-mapping in clinical routine at 3 T: differences between MOLLI, ShMOLLI and SASHA.

BACKGROUND: T1 mapping sequences such as MOLLI, ShMOLLI and SASHA make use of different technical approaches, bearing strengths and weaknesses. It is well known that obtained T1 relaxation times differ between the sequence techniques as well as between different hardware. Yet, T1 quantification is a promising tool for myocardial tissue characterization, disregarding the absence of established reference values. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of native and post-contrast T1 mapping methods as well as ECV maps and its diagnostic benefits in a clinical environment when sc

X-ray physics- and bone composition-based estimation of thickness characteristics from clinical mandibular radiographs.

In dentistry, clinical radiographs (also called X-ray images) reflect the intensity loss of an X-ray when being transmitted through the mandibular objects, and this loss is quantified in terms of grey values. While such images are standardly used for pathology detection by the experienced dentist, we here present a new method for getting more quantitative information out of such 2D radiographs, "extending" them into the third dimension. This "extension" requires consistent combination of X-ray physics (namely, X-ray intensity loss quantification along paths orthogonal to the panoramic clinical

Novel method of constructing a stable reference frame for 3-dimensional cephalometric analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Three-dimensional (3D) cephalometric analysis has provided the ability to overcome the limitations of 2-dimensional cephalometrics. However, there is no international standard method for 3D cephalometric analysis yet. Determining the position of the midsagittal plane (MSP) practically is the most important step when constructing a 3D cephalometric reference frame. Recent studies have used several approaches to construct the MSP. In this study, we aimed to determine the true MSP of the skull to establish a stable reference frame for 3D cephalometric analysis. METHODS: Cone-beam c

Precision assessment of model-based RSA for a total knee prosthesis in a biplanar set-up.

Model-based Roentgen Stereophotogrammetric Analysis (RSA) was recently developed for the measurement of prosthesis micromotion. Its main advantage is that markers do not need to be attached to the implants as traditional marker-based RSA requires. Model-based RSA has only been tested in uniplanar radiographic set-ups. A biplanar set-up would theoretically facilitate the pose estimation algorithm, since radiographic projections would show more different shape features of the implants than in uniplanar images. We tested the precision of model-based RSA and compared it with that of the traditiona

ATMTN: a telemammography network architecture.

One of the goals of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) to reach more than 80% of eligible women in mammography screening by the year 2000 yet remains as a challenge. In fact, a recent medical report reveals that while other types of cancer are experiencing negative growth, breast cancer has been the only one with a positive growth rate over the last few years. This is primarily due to the fact that 1) examination process is a complex and lengthy one and 2) it is not available to the majority of women who live in remote sites. Currently for mammography screening, women have to go to doctors or

Comprehensive evaluation of ten deformable image registration algorithms for contour propagation between CT and cone-beam CT images in adaptive head & neck radiotherapy.

Deformable image registration (DIR) is a critical technic in adaptive radiotherapy (ART) for propagating contours between planning computerized tomography (CT) images and treatment CT/cone-beam CT (CBCT) images to account for organ deformation for treatment re-planning. To validate the ability and accuracy of DIR algorithms in organ at risk (OAR) contour mapping, ten intensity-based DIR strategies, which were classified into four categories-optical flow-based, demons-based, level-set-based and spline-based-were tested on planning CT and fractional CBCT images acquired from twenty-one head & ne

Deep learning for chest radiograph diagnosis: A retrospective comparison of the CheXNeXt algorithm to practicing radiologists.

BACKGROUND: Chest radiograph interpretation is critical for the detection of thoracic diseases, including tuberculosis and lung cancer, which affect millions of people worldwide each year. This time-consuming task typically requires expert radiologists to read the images, leading to fatigue-based diagnostic error and lack of diagnostic expertise in areas of the world where radiologists are not available. Recently, deep learning approaches have been able to achieve expert-level performance in medical image interpretation tasks, powered by large network architectures and fueled by the emergence

Mesh-based approach for the 3D analysis of anatomical structures of interest in radiotherapy.

In this paper a method based on mesh surfaces approximations for the 3D analysis of anatomical structures in Radiotherapy (RT) is presented. Parotid glands meshes constructed from Megavoltage CT (MVCT) images were studied in terms of volume, distance between center of mass (distCOM) of the right and left parotids, dice similarity coefficient (DICE), maximum distance between meshes (DMax) and the average symmetric distance (ASD). A comparison with the standard binary images approach was performed. While absence of significant differences in terms of volume, DistCOM and DICE indices suggests tha

[Computer-assisted retrograde drilling of osteochondritic lesions of the talus with the help of fluoroscopic navigation].

AIM: Due to the narrow access to the talar dome and the proximity of osteochondritic lesions to the joint surface, the therapeutic retrograde drilling often requires multiple attempts and repeated intraoperative X-ray-control. The advantages of a fluoroscopy-based computer-assisted navigation system regarding efficient planning and easy performance of the ideal drill path are evaluated in respect to accuracy and radiation exposure, as well as to time requirements. METHOD: A 5 mm spherical target was subcortically implanted in the medial aspect of the talar dome of 16 human cadaver specimens.

Generation of mineral density distribution maps from subject-specific models of mandibles - a preliminary study.

BACKGROUND: Determination of the mineral content of bone and its distribution by computed tomography (CT) enables one to define the insertion points for prosthetic devices, or determine the degree of healing in cases of fracture or surgical intervention. The use of subject-specific models allows mapping of the spatial structure and the mineral content of the bone graphically and quantitatively. METHODS: Subject-specific models and mineral density maps from pig jaws were developed using segmentation, transcription tools and finite element analysis software. This study considered six frozen hea

Explainable AI for chest radiographs: sex-stratified fairness auditing in CNN-based pneumonia detection.

Artificial intelligence (AI) systems for chest X-ray (CXR) interpretation can achieve high standalone diagnostic accuracy, yet limited transparency raises concerns about subgroup disparities. We audited sex-stratified performance and attention patterns in CNN-based pneumonia detection using the RSNA Pneumonia Detection Challenge dataset (26,684 frontal adult CXRs). ImageNet-pretrained InceptionV3 models were trained across five prespecified random seeds and combined as a seed-ensemble. Analyses used a prespecified, fixed, patient-level sex- and label-balanced test set (n = 1,000; 250 pneumonia

Enhanced osteoporosis screening via multi-output deep learning: Segmentation and classification of metacarpal radiographs.

Osteoporosis screening from radiographic images has traditionally relied on isolated methods that fail to capture the complex interplay between structural segmentation and diagnostic classification. This paper introduce OMO-Net, a novel multi-output deep learning architecture that simultaneously performs segmentation and classification on metacarpal radiographs to accurately detect osteoporosis. Unlike conventional approaches, OMO-Net integrates a ResNet-50-based feature extractor with dedicated segmentation and classification branches, enabling the network to localize diagnostically significa

Computer-Generated Radiographic Measurements of Distal Radius Fractures: Does It Help With Decision Making?

PURPOSE: Operative management of distal radius fractures (DRFs) has become increasingly common. Age, activity levels, and comorbid conditions are major factors influencing the treatment decision, although operative indications are still controversial. Radiographic parameters (RPs), such as radial inclination, dorsal tilt, and articular step-off, can provide objective support for effective decision making. However, manual measurement of RPs may be imprecise and subject to inconsistency. To address this problem, we developed custom software of an algorithm to automatically detect and compute 6 c
